*New Run of Walthers Budd Cars*
Posted by Union Pacific Cascade Division Model RR on Saturday, March 15, 2008 9:17 PM
Walthers has recently posted on their site that they are going to do another run of their legendary Budd cars. They are set to be released on July 4, 2008. I currently have 5 of these cars from their previous run. You need to have 24" radius curves at the minimum regardless of what the instructions say. Otherwise these are great cars and the UP paint scheme looks great behind Athearn's two new steamers.  This run is only on certain models, probably the more popular ones. Does anyone have plans to buy these, if so I may be able to answer some questions.

I have 14 Walthers Budd cars in the SCL, ACL, and SAL roadnames.  I like them very much and am looking forward to seeing the new releases.

Ha, I can get my Budd 10-6 sleeper, Budd Dome Coach, PS Diner, and PS 64 seat coach to run around 22"s...

Go on to their web and type in the search box "Walthers Budd" and they should come up on the first page.

I'm sure your's they will run on a 22" but if you were an HO scale passenger, you would have a hard time jumping to the next car!

I was hoping that undecorated streamliners would be available as well (makes it easier for metalizing Wink [;)] )  Didn't see any in the offerings.

Please post the link to the search page that shows these new Budd cars. The only ones that are new are the 4 GN and Amtrak domes that are being produced off of Empire Builder models...

Yes, they're offering undecorated cars!  Now, I'm happy! Big Smile [:D]  Here's a link to click:

There is nothing new about ANY of those cars. They are old run products, and have since been either retired, sold out, or in limited stock. Some are still on backorder.

I see what you are saying. I didn't mean new cars. I said that Walthers was doing ANOTHER run of their legendary budd cars. They are just releasing them a second time hence the reason I already have some as the origanal post states. Sorry for the mis-understanding.

I would go for UP Budd 85' streamliner cars to go with a set of Proto UP EMD E7s that I have. I bought a Rapido UP cafe car at my LHS for less than $15 but the two colors are miles apart. I like the Rapido cars for my Intermountain NP F units in the Loewy paint scheme where the match it well, better than with Walthers NP cars. Here the Walthers should match Proto, at least I hope so since Walthers owns Proto!

I would not balk at a minimum 24" radius on any 85' passenger cars. If a car can negociate less, the cars must be too far apart or the couplers and trucks must swing so wide that the car would likely to appear to be too high off the rails. I can't see any 85' car looking good on less than about a 30" radius, and even that looks tight.

I've found that the color will vary a slight bit even between the cars themselves. Mine are UP and I bought the cars over the period of a year. A couple have different colors which may be due just to fading. I agree that the larger the radius the better they look. My last layout had 22" radius's. The cars looked terrible. I am building a new layout with minimum 36" radius's.

I didn't feel comfortable running my Walthers cars on a 32'' radius. They still looked pretty tight.

I would be happy if they just finished the Hiawatha set before they start "new" anything.  This is September so the last two cars of the Hiawatha are what? four and three months late respectively.
