The most ugliest paint scheme that comes readily to mine is this one.

Only a mother could like that paint scheme.[:0]

My challenge is, I don't have a "least fave" scheme.[:I] I like 'em all and have painted just about everything one can imagine just to see what it would look like in HO.[:o)]

I dreaded to go into the Illinois Central piggy back yard in Chicago to hook onto a trailer. Those black units suck !, Always filthy , They made me sick to my stomach. At least Norfolk & Southern had some class when they did theirs.

I beg to differ with you "Oh Mighty One", The NYC Black with the Gray Lightning Stripe, was one of the most striking of all paint scheme in the years of the "Great Ones".....NYC, PENNSY, PENN CENTRAL, NEW HAVEN, D&H, and all the other Great Class Ones.....Yaaaaaaaa[:D][:D][:D]

I was really thinking of the simple black with white lettering like NS whenI said that[:)]

The SP would be my least favorite paint scheme.

I really like both the BN green and the BNSF pumpkin. The old SF war bonnet paint scheme was overrated, imho.
Be honest now... wasn't the Red, Yellow and Silver scheme just a teensy bit garish??

The color shemes that I do not like are:

The ollllld Canadian Pacific sheme (Maroon/grey)

The Chicago northwesteren Scheme (They could also change thier logo as well)

Amtrak is not that fitting for me, But I care about it as much a VIA right not (Not much)

Southeren Pacific does not strike my fancy... Needs more color

I like burlington Northern's scheme - but the giant numbers on the side? [xx(]

SCHEMES THAT I DO LIKE

CP Rail Pac-man/newer paintjobs!

CN Rail!

Union Pacific is okay (Have to- got two locos!) :D

Burington northern

Great northern

BC rail

and maybe a few others...

UP Armor yellow on an F-unit makes me gag. It's a little better on a SD70-MAC, but not much. I'll agree with CBQ_Guy, pink hoppers are just plain putrid. Any scheme with pastel colors in it is nasty. The BN Cascade Green job wasn't that great either. Another really BAD one is Family Lines gray background under red and yellow stripes. It looks like some sort of a cross between a cloudy sky and Technicolor TV sets.

Any paint job with pastel colors in it is putrid. UP Armor Yellow just a little too gaudy for me to like, and a mostly gray scheme is terrible!(KCS,SCL).[V][:0]

UP yellow, CNW yellow, SOO white, ROCK bank-rupt blue, CONRAIL bule.
Classic schemes: D&RGW black and Grande Gold, and I have to say I like the NS black and horse head scheme.
The WC scheme wasn't bad either.

I guess I never liked that stupid acela scheme with the blue elliptical shapes. Those morons at amtrak probably thought it was "futuristic"

Up till now I thought you had impeccable credentials. I saw the 'Cream & Green' pulling coal through Denver - a huge upgrade from their std. of Black and Pea-Green.

PS. The striping was RED... like on the U and Pee.

Sorry to disappoint you Don, but my favorite color is cascade green. Next comes big sky blue.

None of this has anything to do with my likes or dislikes of a particular railroad. The truth is I like all railroads. There really isn't even a color of the rainbow that I don't like. The trouble comes when certain colors are combined, and put on a locomotive.

Take our big discussion of SP from the other topic. I like the orange red and black of the Daylight, but when the orange and red are combined on that "checkerboard" thing, for lack of a better term, the colors become ugly. Aestheticly unpleasant!!!

I guess I don't find soft colors appropriate for railroad locomotives. Beige is one of those soft colors. Soft is trying to make a fashion statement, hence the Martha Stewart remark. Railroads generally use strong, bold colors, partly for safety reasons.

I loved the BN's green with white and black, except toward the end when they started adding orange safety stripes to the noses. That ruined it for me.

If you don't like the scheme, just say so. No one asked you to expose your homophobia. Not everyone who reads this site is straight!

I really don't have a least favorite paint job. The one thing you have to remember is that they are easy for the railroads to maintain. I will agree that the Empire Builder orange/green of BNSF is not the best. I like the Warbonnet with large BNSF letters.

I wouldn't say I hate any color schemes, but my least favorite would probably be:

* The funky Kodachrome SP/SF merger. (Actually, this comes pretty close to "hate" [:D])

* Anything solid black just doesn't do it for me. It looks great for steam, but not for diesels. The exception is the old SCL black with white lettering and yellow stripe trim. For some strange reason, this looks cool to me (maybe because of fond childhood memories?)

* Speaking of steam, I think anything other than black is a waste of good paint that could otherwise be used on freight cars, tractors, ships, etc.

* I agree the grey Family Lines System with red/yellow stripes is pretty ugly.

Since I missed out on the "favorite" topic, here are my favorites:

* I really dig the BNSF great pumpkin scheme with yellow lettering. I just think it looks really sharp.

* The CSX blue/grey/yellow looks pretty good.

* I'm not a big fan of Eurotrains, but I think Amtrak's blue and grey Eurotrain scheme is pretty nice.

* The UP scheme looks good too, but I agree that it doesn't belong on an F-unit. (Hmmm, all the "big" companies made my list. I guess if you have that much money, you can afford to pay somebody to design it right way [:)])

* On an F-unit, I'd have to say the Rio Grande (ala Royal Gorge Route) is the best. IMO, the warbonnet is a bit overexposed. Don't get me wrong, it's a sharp-looking scheme, but you see it everywhere. It's kind of like Cindy Crawford during the '90's - you thought she was a knockout when she first hit the scene, but after seeing her on the cover of every magazine for 5 years, you stop turning your head when you walk by the newsstand.

Cheers,

Dan Stokes
