I'm glad to see that Lupo threw the switch. For a while there, I thought this topic was heading down the wrong track. It had become serious, and hoplessly dull.[}:)][;)][:D]

I took another look at the ad and discovered that they state:
"Suitable for adult collectors only"
that explaines a lot!!!![(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D]

If you read into the details about the Horn(b)y live steam engine, it comes with a special power pack, and uses track power to boil the water, so it must have close to regular house current on the rails. And remember, the British standard is 220 Volts AC, not 110 as in the U.S., so unless they provide a special U.S. power supply that is made to operate on 110 Volts, you can't use it here. It could even be possible that this power supply is a step up transformer that is putting more than power line voltage onto the track. Since the track power is only used to boil water and not to operate the engine, any voltage is possible, and if I had one of these I wouldn't dare put any other locomotive or lighted passenger car on the same track. Notice, too, that no price is given. Any time something is advertised like that, it's a case of "If you have to ask, you obviously can't afford it!"

I have heard 2 things about the Hornby live steamer.
1) the North American version is not in production yet -- they are waiting to see what advance orders come in -- may only produce to orders,
2) A lot of the UK production has been returned for (unspcified) problems.

So, what I hear you saying is that you are looking for the horney engine to mate with your "cows", in order to produce more "calves". Maybe you should check the yellow pages for a Loco stud service.[;)]

By the way, this topic has been even more fun than the house of ill repute (I mean the topic posted a while ago, as opposed to the genuine article)[:-,]

I've not yet seen a live steam Hornby loco "in the metal", but the ones I saw on a CD-ROM handed out by Continental Modeller magazine last year were hauling 5 or more passenger cars without any trouble - would very much like to try one on my 9-car British express set (Bachmann MK1s and Thompsons). I don't think haulage ability is going to be a problem, so long as you keep loads within scale lengths - it shouldn't have trouble with a typical 10-car British express.

I hear that the technology behind it has been licensed to a US manufacturer, so there could be a live steam US loco soon.

In response to those talking about the fact that it isn't DCC compatible, I agree that this is a problem. I was dismayed to find that Hornby had had to produce a completely new power and control system for it. Would still consider buying one if I could afford it though!

Running neck and neck down a heavily traveled stretch of mainline just outside of Chicago during the transition era, a well travelled Hudson lets out a mighty wail as she chugs-chugs-chugs in thunderous harmony beside a sleek new diesel. Her drivers galloping like the legs of the fastest of fillys, she shows the 'newcomer' that the old girl still has what it takes to run with the best.

The diesel, clearly impressed and filled with a bit of mischief yells, "Nice stride! And that steam! Are you putting on a show or is that happiness to see me?" You can almost see it wink at the mare racing beside it. The Hudson, ever composed, chooses to ignore the diesel's horny advances.

As for a HORNBY, I've yet to look one over, let alone consider purchasing one.[(-D][(-D]

Yes but it could be a sign of things to come. 20 years from now we may have fusion powered Alleghenys and Big Boys

I can't image it (hornby live steamer) could be powerful enough to move anything. All the space inside is machinery, no weight. Its like a novelty locomotive.

the Hornby Live steam is a flop, since it can't be run with any other loco's. you're pretty much limited to it becoming an expensive around the tree train.

Hmm..a horny Engine, must have ran into a herd of bulls along the track, i knew those cow catchers were good for something.

But seriously, I would definitly consider the HORNBY live steam IF it was DCC controlled and could run on the same track
as other locos. Dave
