Here-in lies the rub - it is 00 and not H0 and you can only run one loco at a time ( unless of course you have each track electrically isolated and run by its own controller ).

A word of caution on buying these sets. Do not buy from out of your country.
The British controllers do not work with North American power even with a step down transformer.
There is a Canadian Edition that is CSA approved; the American version is not CSA approved but is probably UL approved. (CSA wanted some extra doo-dads.)
I think there is a fourth version -- Continental Europe? -- as well.

Well, I'm not sneering! I saw this engine run at the Hornby booth at last year's Chicago Hobby Expo, and it was really cool! Hopefully, someone will crank out the electronics to make this technology compatible with standard DC or DCC, 'cause that's the only way I'll be picking one up.

You could, of course, craete an entire layout based on these engines, with full standard block control. Several of these engines steaming, popppingand whistling around a layout; now THAT whould be steam modeling!

on the serious subject of the hornby live steam loco. you all seem to be under the impression that it is a weak loco and a "flop".
far from it it is perfectly capable loco that i have personally seen haul 13 carrages up a 2' incline. and far from being a flop it is sold out pretty much across england. i am reliable informed that there is a DCC decoder in the pipeline from another manufacturer as there IS enough power in dcc to cope with the boiler.
i dont have one because i cant afford £500 on a loco and i dont have dcc anyway and am not rebuilding my layout to cope with it. but if you look at it as it is intended it is an executive toy and not a serious model. i.e. great for a tabletop.

I saw it at the NMRA convention in Seattle. It ran great. It was also messy as that steam and oil condenses. I suspect most will be bought as a novelty and rarely run. I'd like to get one but I already have enough shelf queens.
