I was recently meeting with a group at our church during which everybody had to take turns mentioning something about themselves that maybe nobody else knew. I naturally said that I enjoy playing with model trains. The response from the group was a collective "That's really cool" and I discovered another model railroader in the group.
If you distill it down to its most basic level, then yes, we are just playing with (expensive) toys. But it's also a welcome and therapeutic relief from the stresses and strains of our 1:1 proportion lives. I don't wear my hobby out on my sleeve (except when I wear my Monon T-shirt) but I don't necessarily hide it under a basket, either. It's just part of who I am, and if somebody thinks poorly of me because of it,well, I have plenty of other reasons way far ahead of trains that would cause people to think poorly of me...

This all reminds me of a cartoon in one of the old MRs I have, our cartoon hero is visiting a friends really realistic layout, and they see some reefers with the lids on top open, the friend screams "Hey who left the lids open? Those cars have produce in them!".

So finally after three posts I now see what you mean . Yes, if you mention model railroading to the average "joe on the street" all they see is that little oval loop circling a Christmas tree.
When the same people see what i'm talking about by stepping into my miniature world, their preception of "trains" changes dramatically. The biggest response I get is: this is great!, this must take lots of time, this takes lots of money, or the combination of the two. Most people are totally amazed and rarely am I chastized for it. I've had over 100 people see my layout in the past and only once did I get a guy that thought it was for kids and was a waste of my time. ( And to be quite honest I just think he was jealous because he didn't have the patience to pull off a model railroad of his own.)
My advice to you is to keep an issue of model railroader close by and when the subject does pop up, show them what you are talking about through the pictures in the magazine. Besides, I could care less what other people think of me or my hobby. To make a long story short, they can all KMA...chuck

The best thing I've heard in a long time! May even describe me, I have no problems telling people that I am a model railroader. When I worked I had several model and prototype railroad photos on my office walls. I have a prototype railroad switchstand in front of our house, complete with a lantern that comes on at dusk. Often people dropping by such as deliverymen ask if I work for the railroad, I tell them no (Canadian Coast Guard retiree), say I am interested in trains and model trains. No one has ever said anything condesending about it. Wouldn't care if they did either.

Reference the other sub-topic that crawled out of the woodwork, I've seen a visitor to Sin City part company with a C-note in about thirty seconds in a local 'gentlemen's club.' He did get a nice smile for it - and she was pretty.

I agree with several of the past five or six posters. If we are going to enjoy some time together(my silent meaning to whomever I happen to encounter), you might as well know the real me. I like toy trains, if the hobby thing comes up, and only some folks have any interest whatsoever. If hobbies are all that we can talk about, each of us had better be good listeners, taking turns doing it. Otherwise, it will be a very short or a very long evening/meeting. The same applies to our work.
As Dave so aptly stated, he and I have had a great deal of seriousness in our grown-up lives leading soldiers. Whatever elicits a smile from us at home that is not a loved one is surely not a bad thing.

I was buying some dowel rod and craft paint at Wally World the other day. The "guy" at the register "assumed" I was building doll houses. He thought that was just soooooooooo cute and sweeeeeet!!! Started getting a little too friendly. (if you know what I mean). Then I told him it was for a model railroad. MAN!!! Talk about a 180 attitude change!!! You would have thought I just told the guy I produced kiddy porn videos!
I just don't get some peoples attitudes about trains. Like it would be more acceptable for a middle aged guy to build doll houses instead of trains...

I dont hide my hobby but I also dont preach it, its just something I do for myself, not for anyone else. If I want to discuss something or talk to other modelers I come to websites like this. I'm absolutly not going to try to "convert the unfaithfull" at the local Starbucks, why should I? I hate people who publicly try to push thier values (and hobbies) on others, I have experienced it and I wont ever do it myself.
I figure 95% of the people out there are so completely wrapped up in themselves, that ANY activity outside of there universe of experience would recieve the same disdainfull dismissal. So I dont offer it up in conversation unless someone else does. Its not like I hide it, I have a hobby calender at work, and a couple of small N scale Shinkisen models on my desk, its out in place site but no-one cares and so dont bother me one way or the other.

You know, I don't ever get that response. But then everyone who knows me knows what I do for a living. So I can be forgiven, apparently, for trivial pursuits, given the very non-trivial nature of what I do.
Most folks I mention it to (when the subject comes up) find it interesting. Not all do, but I've never been dismissed as an adult for wasting my time with toy trains.
My commanders have never given me guff about it either... In fact, my first squadron commander came to me for advice about setting up an old Marklin set he'd picked up while stationed in Germany.

In a way I can grasp the concept of the skeptics. I veiw stamp collecting, bird watching, analysing the stock market, and mant other activitys as a waste of time. Does it mean that those that enjoy such "strange" things are any less or more of a person than I? Absolutly not! Just don't expect me to happily join you for an afternoon of looking at used stamps with some unknown person's spit on the back side.
Everyone has something that trips their trigger and tickles their fancy....and some people can't understand why everybody else thinks they are weird.
