I posted these photos a while back, but since you asked:

 The first is my own railroad, in a obviously Reading inspired paint scheme. This is an Athearn SD40-2 model.  I have several more models, GP38's, Alco C430's, etc in the same style.

The other, I posted as a "what if" type paint scheme. I had an extra Athearn P42DC body and some left over decals from my Pennsy Baldwin Sharks project. Note that it's just the body painted and temporarily snapped onto a regular Amtrak painted chassis. There's also no handrails or window "glass" on the model

BN SDP40 1976.  I did this around 25 years ago.  I' wanting for someone to come out with a decent SDP40 so I can redo it and match it up with the Atlas U30C on order and the Kato SD40-2 that I'm superdetailing and adding sound to.

 

I was about to hunt down an SDP40, but someone told me to wait because Athearn will re release them with all the retooling, maybe they will do these both 40 and 45?

 I've only painted 3 projects so far...the rest have been nothing but weathering. An airbrush would be nice someday but for these I've only used rattle cans and paint brushes. I might continue without an airbrush until next year sometime. Finances are depleted at the moment!

Those look AMAZING!!! The BN hopper is my favorite, (BN is my fav road despite my screen name) It doesn't even look like you need an airbrush, But, from someone who just bought his second which is dual action.... I gotta say you deserve one. Think of what you could do if you have one. It's so much fun. I also keep my single action for when I don't need the dual. I understand funds are tight, I just spent the last of my budget for a while. I hope this is insirational to you. Maybe mow a couple of lawns or something, but do get one ASAP! -and when you do, show us your work!

Hey, I had one of those that I painted in the Trona Railway paint scheme. It's now lost in the mists of time, just as is the old Trona. How does yours run? As I remember, mine ran OK but sounded like a cement mixer.

To answer your question UP2CSX, I put a can motor in the Hallmark AS-616 with plastic universal. The gear towers still make noise sounding like a Baldwin, so thats the sound unit. It's one of my best switchers on the layout nowadays.

Nice work.  Do you have plans to do the F45 (or is it a FP45) that Maersk had?  What else did they paint up?  Wasn't there a SD40-2 as well?

Thanks for the compliment, and sorry for the late reply (had to work sunday).  I do have planned on doing another GP-60M and an unprototypical B unit in the Maersk scheme.  As far as I have read up, they painted a SD40-2 and a SDF40-2 (which looks a bit like the FP45).  Maybe in the future I might consider them so I'll probably just get the decal sheets now and store them, you never know if they'll be around later.  I also plan on making some Maxi I's, but I hear Athearn is coming out (came out?) with them.  Either way I have 2 sets of decals ready for those well cars.

I'm almost done with this one 100%.  The fuel tank was shortened, fuel filler and piping details added, and I also added new phase 2 truck sideframes with details.  I will post a picture when fully completed.  It started out as an undecorated Rail Power GP-60M.

Nice work.  Do you have plans to do the F45 (or is it a FP45) that Maersk had?  What else did they paint up?  Wasn't there a SD40-2 as well?

Well, then maybe someday you will do a video.  I just see a talent that has to be passed on or is only good for one person.  I'm not a bible scholar but wasn't there a parable about three guys that were given each some talents and the one that buried it didn't receive a reward.  That reminds me of Mellow Mike, who has such great talent but chooses not to share it.  Trust me I have had many email conversations about it with him.  Jeff, I'm sure that you are different. (gilt trip.  Eh, I'm just having fun with you.)

Here are a couple of oldies:  Athearn geeps that I did in the late '70s.  They were featured in MR's Paintshop in February, 1980.  The models are modified to match photos of their prototypes, including the weathering.  I don't have a scanner, or I'd post the prototype photos, too.  Paint is custom-mixed Polly S, applied with a brush.  All lettering is painted-on, with dry transfer alphabet sets used to make-up masks for the roadname and numbers.  The heralds on the cab were painted free-hand, with a fine brush, as no proper lettering was available at the time.

 

 

Several years ago, I used Mashimi can motors to re-motor the 403, and motorise the 76, which was originally a dummy.  Both units received the newer, plastic version Blomberg trucks at this time, too, and were heavily ballasted.  LifeLike Canada has since come out with ready-to-run versions of these locos, which are very well done, but lack the sentimental value, at least to me, of these two oldtimers.

I've seen your stuff on the other board and they are fantastic.  If you're saying that you've achieved those effects using rattle spray cans, I've got two things to call you - either Leonardo or liar.  I can't believe you can get those results with cans and not an airbrush.  I saw you explanation of the BN car and want to try to that on one soon.  Amazing results.

OK, most of these are oldies since I've just started my new layout after about 30 years out of the hobby. I did save a few things from that era.

The first is an Athearn UP F-7 that I detailed with the Walthers super detail kit, sunshades, and even some crude windshield wipers. This was considered to be a pretty good looking engine in 1974:

This is an Overland Brass CA-4 UP caboose from about 1970. She has had a long life and been to the paint shop a number of times and she's not long for end of train service:

This rather crummy picture is a caboose I painted and decaled for my first freelanced railroad, the Petaluma & Adobe. Who remembers what company made it?:

For a few of things I've done recently, this is the P&N's combination car/caboose, repainted from a Pennsy AHM car. She's named after my lovely wife, of course:
