My fictional Pennsylvania coal hauler...

SD40's by Kato.  No, I didn't dull coat it... the WM had a wash rack, and they weren't afraid to use it!

Atlas SD35... fortunately, I painted mine with the one number (out of 5) that they haven't produced!

Chopper!

Atlas VO-1000.  This turned out very nicely... then I decided to weather it with a hammer...  Oh well, lesson learned.  Washes are better than spray any day.

These two Proto 2000 E7's are both repaints. The loco on the left was Originally in B&O paint. It's now in the KCS black scheme. Note that the paint is slightly faded. The loco on the right was originally in SP paint. It's now in the KCS white scheme. Note the rust on the pilot.

Jeff,

Whay color & type of paint did you use for that KCS engine? Also what decal set.

Equipment primer gray. I print my own decals on MSPaint. The KCS logo is done on text size 36 or 48 depending on what kind of loco I'm working on. The cab numbers are size 18 and the small text is size 6. I usually Arial font.

Here's mine.  It's painted for the CA&S, my freelanced line, and is unfinished until I get a spray booth or warm weather comes.

My old KCS 666 was looking pretty tired. I recently did a new one from an Athearn Blue Box kit.

From the time that I started this thread to now I have done 3 engines that most of you have seen but I'm going to post them again.

Please lets keep this thread going with more photos.

Hello and THANKS! Hey, I did experiment once with a friend's inexpensive Testors airbrush and he also used those cans of air. Ugh. I did NOT like the cans of air. They worked good for awhile but the pressure seemed inconsistent. He was a novice as well so maybe we were doing it wrong. Anyway, this is all conversation for a different thread. When it gets closer, I'll seek advice on another topic but I did decide that I'm not getting an airbrush until I can afford a quality brand along with a real good compressor. Speaking of BN "paint peelers", there are also some neat blue MRL covered hoppers with BN's Cascade Green coming through! Very wild looking freight cars...

Jeff (MrKLUKE)

Before the days of me getting a nice little airbrush set, I used to use a cheap-o airbrush and the canned air.  I had read somewhere that if you keep the canned air in a container with room-temp water, it'll reduce the loss of pressure while airbrushing.  As you use the air from the can , the can gets cold and it causes the pressure to fall.  The water absorbs the coldness from the can and helps regulate the can temp.  Eventually you'll need to "refresh" the water since the water will get cold, but you might run out of canned air before this happens.  One of the problems with doing this is that while you're airbrushing, you'll have a tub of water next to you with your compressed air submerged in it.  This tip did seem to help though.

This is what I use now (http://www.rcslot.com/pc-radio-control-slot-cars/TES9169.html).  So far it's given me good results and I like how easy it is to operate and clean.  I've seen them at Wal-Mart, but I don't remember the price, I got mine as a gift anyhow.

My only real custom paint job so far has been these two GP15s, painted for a shortline in Northern Wisconsin:

1500:

1501:

The pair:

I did a couple other units a few years ago too, but they aren't worth posting, as they weren't very good. I now consider them my "practice" units....

I always like seeing others' custom paint jobs, so this thread is really neat! I only hope I can do paint jobs that are as good as some of the ones posted here someday...

Jeff,

I did the same thing with my brother's Testors cheep airbrush that attached to a can.  He gave it to me to try and it was just as good as a rattle can.  So I forked out the cash and bought one at the LHS.  What a good investment!  It was easy for me since I already had a pancake compressor from Porter Cable that I used for work.

I've seen those MRL Hoppers first hand that have the green coming through when I lived in Bozeman Montana going to school up there.  I plan on modeling them when I get good.
