Engine rosters have a tendency to grow uncontrollably, like your lawn when you're on a long vacation! I've been back in this hobby for about 10 years now, and have an HO roster of over 150 engines! Most of these engines will never turn a driver on my new layout, so I'm in the process of "rationalizing" my fleet as well. My goal is to get down to about 75 engines, 40 of which will be regular runners.

What's my fleet look like? Off the top of my head:

F3 - 6
F7 - 2
GP7 - 6
GP9 - 4
GP18 - 4
RS-1 - 1
RS-2 - 1
RS-3 - 4
RS-11 - 1
RSD-12 - 1
S-1 - 4
SW7 - 4
44 tonner - 1
PA-1 - 2
DL-109 - 2
E7A - 2
Trainmaster - 1
GP30 - 1
GP35 - 1
C-420 - 1
Doodlebug - 1
0-6-0 - 6
0-8-0 - 8
2-6-0 - 1
2-8-0 - 10
2-8-2 - 32
2-8-4 - 13
4-4-0 - 1
4-4-2 - 1
4-6-0 - 4
4-6-2 - 8
4-6-4 - 1
4-8-4 - 1
2-6-6-2 - 1
2-8-8-2 - 1

Mine is rather unusual, I suppose:

The backbone locomotives for my HO scale switching layout are two SW1s lettered for Walla Walla Traction Co. These were painted and lettered by Blair Kooistra and were his main motive power for a while. We swapped some motive power earlier this year -- a LL sound-equipped Geep 9 for the SW1s. Here's what they look like on Blair's previous layout.

Here's another atmospheric shot Blair took. This one makes me want to go work on the layout every time I see it.

Nice, eh? And they run like watches. I've owned and operated many a locomotive, but these two are among my favorites. You can click on the photos for a larger version.

Also on board are:
1 UP SW9
1 NP SW7
1 SP&S RS1
1 SP&S RS3

I have other locomotives in HO scale that are not in use on this layout, mainly SP&S, as well as some British Railways OO scale locomotives.

I only have a Bachmann UP 4-8-2 Light Mountain. I only have a small 5'x9' layout, so I only need a small roster. I hope on getting a couple more road locomotives, but I'm not sure what yet. I might get an Athearn Genesis 2-8-2 Mikado for freight or a Proto 2000 E6A/E6B for passengrs. For switching, I'm going to get either a Bachmann 2-8-0 Consolidation or a Stewart Hobbies VO-1000, or maybe even both. [:)] I might also get a Walthers Doodlebug for light passenger service.
huh?

So you're one of the people that beat me on the GLE engines. I go on that site all the time but every time he sells engines I (somehow) miss the bidding. I was hoping to get the the GP40-2 as the SD70I would have been out of my price range.

Well, I counted my trains a couple days ago and have 119 HO scale locomotives. With that many I'm not about to list all of them. I have a little bit of everything, with a wide range of steam and diesel locomotives. I also have 78 O and S gauge prewar and postwar tinlate locomotives as well. I buy most of my trains used, so that accounts for why I have as many as I do.

Just getting back into the hobby after selling all my stuff a few years ago... very small roster right now!

AMD-103 Amtrak Phase 5 #134 - Athearn
AMD-103 Amtrak Phase 5 #204 - Athearn
Acela Express (set) - Bachmann Spectrum

On order:

GG1 Pennsy Brunswick Green - Broadway Limited (can't wait for this!)

Next up will be some sort of steam - I'm modeling more or less a modern era (giving myself some fantasy leeway) so probably only get one or two... hoping I can still find a BL J1E Hudson by the time I'm ready.

I have modeled N.Y.C. steam for at least 25 years,as the manufactures keep improving thier product,I keep up gradeing my roster[I cant afford to do that too often with brass].
I now have more super-detailed,re-powerd,decoder equipped engines than I could ever run...or display .It's a expensive '' HABIT".

Too many to list, but my favorite engine is the EMD E-8. I have about six of 'em. One will make (reverse) history when I repaint it from Amtrak to Pennsy livery. Other units I am partial to and own are the: F-7 and F-9, GP-30 and GP35, SD - 7 and SD-9. I also enjoy my 2-8-8-2 with DCC and Sound (oh, sorry. I am bragging now.) and my 2 Mountains. However, I would never think of limiting myself to such a small fleet. I like and want them all. Good Question. Thanks.....

I find the responses to the question astonishing.( to use a milder word) OK OK If I'm dumbfounded by the volume, don't look at it !!! I shall take a little of my own advice.

I model the Reading in HO, so naturally, these are all Reading:

3 Proto GP-7's
1 Proto S1
1 Stewart DR4-4-10
1 Stewart F7 AB

I have numerous old Tyco and AHM from when I was a kid, also an ATT/Hornby Rocket that was my grandfather's. I think that one may be impossible to convert to DCC

The Rivendell & Midland has four locomotives and one interurban car.

2-8-0 (scratchbuilt, Live steam)
2-4-4-2 (scratchbuilt, Live steam)
14 ton Shay (scratchbuilt, Live steam)
25 Ton Climax (modified Bachman, Battery powered)
Steam Streetcar (scratchbuilt, Live steam)

With the exception of the Climax, this has been the core roster of locomotives in five incarnations of the railroad through reuilds, relocations, and gauge/scale changes. The rirst three were HO standard, current is 1:20.3 live steam. The operating concept and basic roster of the railroad has not changed substantially in 20+ years of modeling.

For those of you who have too many locos and say you are going to thin them out, how are you going to decide what to keep? If you are like me , its really tough.

As a general rule I only buy Kato and Overland. I do have a few exceptions like my D&H RF-16's stewart F"s and Atlas GP-40's and U30C's

I model Santa Fe in HO, currently backdating to the mid-late 50's. Here's the active roster:

Passenger:
2 Stewart F7AB (both powered) sets

Freight:
2 Stewart F3AB (dummy b) sets
2 Stewart FTAB (dummy b) sets
2 Atlas/Kato GP-7s
2 Atlas H16-44s
1 Atlas/Kato RS1

Switchers:
1 Stewart DS-4-4-1000
1 Atlas S-2

When I slip into the early 60's, when SF began the first blue/yellow scheme, the following come out to play:

Freight:
1 Atlas/Kato GP-7
1 Athearn GP-35

Switchers:
1 Atlas S-2
1 Atlas S-4

Inactive freight engines; all late 60's +; don't know what I'm going to do with them yet:
1 Athearn U33-C
1 Atlas GP-38
1 Athearn SD-40-2

I tried to make a roster in 1989 for my insurance company and when I got over a certain number, I scared myself and quit counting. I am certain it has doubled since then with all the fine offerings lately. My latest additions are two sets (A-B-B-A, A-B-B-A) of the Athearn Genesis Fs for the Walthers Super Chief and last weekend at GATS I bought a Proto 0-8-0 in Missouri Pacific colors. Couldn't pass on the price of $80. I've got the Genesis 4-6-6-4 D&RGW on order. Pitty I don't have a layout to run them on.

I've limited my road names which helps a little. I'm down to seven or so.
I've ditched all the high priced brass steam that doesn't run well anyway.
I've ditched ALL the brass diesels except for an E5.
I'm eliminating duplicates.
Actually, I don't have much trouble thining, it is just hard to thin them faster than they accumulate. I now close my eyes when I see things like the Lionel and Trix Big Boys, the Rivarossi Allegeny. Plus the newest rule. If I have no place to store the thing when I get home I can't buy it.

good lordy... i sure wish i had at least a few engines... lol, i'm just starting out in the hobby and my only engine that i have is a kato, EMD SD40, i think... I'm not currently near it so i don't know for sure. Conrail paint scheme.... it cost like 100 bucks... i have yet to run it, but i have the detailed parts on it finally except the hand rails... i am not coordinated enough to put them on... everything else was easy enough... i lost too many of the handrails trying to put them on and dropping them and not finding them... oh well... i'm hoping that for christmas i'll get maybe another engine for my roster. my buddy and i are working on setting up a layout in his basement, and we don't really have all that much stuff now... gotta wait till after christmas to buy the track for our big layout though. so for now we're just using some EZ track from bachmann until then. anyone have any Conrail engines that they are looking to part with for a decent price? Email me at Chadg@fulton-net.com Thanks.... Chad

I probably need to do this anyway after thinning the (brass) herd:
2- H16-44 VGN
2- H24-66 VGN
1- PA & 1- PB C&O (yeah, I know)
1- 0-4-0 N&W
3- 0-8-0... 2- N&W, 1- VGN
2- 4-6-2 VGN
3- 2-8-2 VGN
1- 2-8-4 VGN
2- 4-8-2 N&W (one brass streamlined)
3- 4-8-4 N&W (one brass)
2- 2-6-6-4 N&W
3- 2-8-8-2... 2- N&W, 1- VGN

I never thought I'd be here, but I have almost everything I want or need as far as locomotives go. All I want now is a BLI Class J, and a 4-8-0 from somewhere, and maybe a 2-6-6-2 as well, but I am done with more brass, so I will have to wait and see.
What could have happened.... did.

My primary interest, as will be obvious, is the UP in the 1940's. To that end, I have reduced my roster to the following:

HO Scale Roster (all Union Pacific):

EMD E2A #LA-1 Oriental Limited
EMD E2B #LA-2 Oriental Limited
EMD E2B #LA-3 Oriental Limited
EMD E3A #5-M-1 Oriental Limited
EMD E3B #5-M-2 Oriental Limited
EMD E6A #LA-4 Oriental Limited
EMD E6B #LA-5 Oriental Limited
EMD E6B #LA-6 Oriental Limited

Alco PB-1 undec (will be #998b) Life Like Proto 2000
Alco PA-1 undec (will be #995a) Life Like Proto 2000
FM Erie-Built #704 Life Like Proto 1000
FM Erie-Built #706b Life Like Proto 1000
FM Erie-Built #706 Life Like Proto 1000
Alco S-2 #1151 Atlas
Alco 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4006 Rivarossi
Alco 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4008 Rivarossi
Alco 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4010 Rivarossi
Alco 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4011 Rivarossi
Alco 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4023 Key Imports
Alco 4-6-6-4 Challenger #3967 Rivarossi
Alco 4-6-6-4 Challenger #3985 Rivarossi
Alco 4-8-4 Northern FEF-3 #835 Rivarossi
Alco 4-8-4 Northern FEF-3 #844 Rivarossi
USRA 4-8-2 Light Mountain #7009 Bachmann Spectrum
USRA 2-8-0 Consolidation #721 Bachmann Spectrum
USRA 2-8-0 Consolidation #721 (will be renum'd to #722) Bachmann Spectrum

I'm considering replacing my brass E-6's with the Broadway Limited set. That will allow funds to also get the BLI E-6 AA set (UP #7-M-1 & 7-M-2), something I failed to do when I could afford brass. Not sure yet, though. Otherwise, I'm always looking for something different that UP would have run in the 40's.

Cheers,

--Mike

Started about two months ago and this is what I have

Bachmann Spectrum 4-8-2 J2 Heavy C&O George Washington Set with SoundTraxx decoder for passenger service

Proto 2K 0-8-0 C14 switcher for my yard work also with SoundTraxx decoder

Proto 2K 2-8-8-2 Virginian with QSI (yes they shared lines with C&O so this is okay!) for freight hauls - THIS BY FAR IS MY FAVORITE BECAUSE OF THE DETAIL!

Broadway 2-10-4 T1 C&O with QSI for coal drags. - Close second favorite

Now all I need is my coal cars, and cabooses and I'm all set for moving stock.

So far planning a 2 main track U shaped layout with a 3rd mid track to be shared by passing passenger/freight trains. (Prototypical for C&O) I'm glad I bought the 2-10-4 before I actually laid any real track. That thing is a hog on the test curves I set up! I may have to rethink my plan and go for a wide shelf layout!

In US HO (also have German N, British OO, and some LGB):

Athearn:
2 x SW7
SD9
GP60
F7A
F7B
PA1
SD40T-2
SD40-2
3 x Dash 9
AC4400

Bachmann
F7A
Dash 8
2 x GP40
GP50

E-R Models (Roco chassis)
2 x FP7
Baldwin Sharknose

Lifelike Proto
Erie-Built
C-Liner A/B

Walthers Trainline
F40PH
Dash 8-40B

That's the ones I can remember! Have just ordered a DCC starter set (Lenz Compact) so will be going through the fleet fitting decoders. First to be fitted will be the Sharknose, C-Liner A unit, Erie-Built, and Dash 8-40B, along with a Bachmann OO scale GWR 66XX class 0-6-2 tank loco (used for heavy coal haulage over here in the steam age, mine runs with a lengthy train of Dapol coal wagons). Have been adding extra power feeds to my layout today in preperation for DCC, have another one or two to go in so that all track is live all the time.

Way too many, most just bought because I liked the way they looked, very few actually working for a living. And they are all Kato ALCos, about 6 of 'em, 424s, a 425, and RS11s.
The rest just decorate my shelves, about 60-70 in all, I think.

Mine's a western-themed mix, with small, low-drivered (51-57") engines predominating: I'm modeling a souped-up version of the Colorado Midland, circa 1913, so I used a little modeler's license to incorporate some of the USRA stuff that's now available.

my roster consists of approx 65 x locomotives... mainly conrail and c s x ...there are perhaps about 10 x run thru locos

my list of locomotives are different to a lot of the other lists i have read..( lots of mixed locos dd40.. steamers for example ) ........................my fleet of locomotives are collected to run to specific types of trains

conrail hauls intermodel and csx hauls mainly coal

conrail locos are mainly sd 40..50..60 80

csx are mainly big ge locos...for example i have 17 athearn ge c40-8 or c44ac.. these pull long coal drags

i also have a canadian train.. 3 ge locos kato sd90 ..hauling 30 wagon grain train

the runthru trains run intermodel...military.. auto rack

i have maybe only 5 or 6 locos i do not want.. mainly because they are not in the time period..example c30/7,s

when i convert to dcc i mayget rid of perhaps 20 locos and buy another 10 ..more sd80,s and some ac6000

i would love to have one of everything..however ..i have decided to run my railroad as i would if it was a real railroad and limit the types of locos....thanks..peter

Has anyone actually read the entire roster for all posts on this thread? I am sure I have the least amount of locomotives by a factor of 10. In any event is there any conclusion here?

Oh well, everybody else is doing it. LOL! Don't worry it's a short list:

1 Brass (W&R) Brill Gas Electric 'Doddlebug' NYC #M-10
1 Kato NW2 Switcher - DCC Sound upgrade NYC# 8700 (originally C&O)
1 Tyco-Mantua Alco Century 430 'Spirit of '76' #4301 (no road indicated)
1 Lima SNCF French Electric Loco (type unknown)
1 Hornby 2-6-2 Brittania 'Oliver Cromwell'
1 Bachmann F-7 C&O (This engine will be leaving roster shortly as it stinks)

I'm too embrassed to put the Disney World Baldwin engine on the list but it actually runs quite well and looks good. :)

Who started this madness anyway?

I only have 26, but I'm not going to type them all in. Here's a link to my site:

http://home.comcast.net/~ccmhet4/trains.html

There is a link to Motive Power and Rolling Stock. They are all there with the exception of my AHM FEC BL2's. I just picked them up off eBay about 2 months ago and have yet to post the pic's!

I have five steam engines, each a fairlyaccurate model of a prototype Maine two foot gauge steam locomotive. Only five, not fifteen, not fifty-five. Five.

I don't comprehend how you guys can possibly need the numbers of engines that you do. Some of you own more motive power that some Class 1 railroads. With a total mileage in the units, you have no need for that many engines. Most of them must be gathering dust.

If it is a Diesel-electric and NYC had it there is a 95% chanch I have it. As you can well imagin NYC had quite a few different diesel-electrics before their demise. I roster about 75 diesel electrics either painted in NYC, P&LE or D&MR. I also have 3 Niagras, 3 hudsons, 2 Mikados 2 0-6-0s, 2 0-8-0 and probably some I forgot. The ones I use on the layout is about 30 and most have sound.

Plus one rubber squeeze toy 0-6-0 my wife got me to put in the shower for some reason. She must think I like trains. It squirts water and is one of the Thomas the Tank engines---but I am not sure which one. I also have a smattering of O Scale (not Lionel) and some N scale, in assorted road names.

About 4 or 5 years ago I got fed up with maintaining a large fleet of mostly brass steam locos, and moved the era of my large, operation orientated freelance road from 1949 to 1965(ish). Since then I seem have acquired about 50% more diesels than I used have steamers..........

Ah well, so it goes, I've just moved and have got less space now but have it in one chunk rather than spread out over three basement rooms, so I may prune this list, but this is it as it is now. About half of these are serviceable and DCC equipped but not necessarily painted, the rest are works in progress.

Almost all of mine are HO. I have close to 100 engines. I hardly know anything about them. I recently inherited them. I love trains but I am not very well educated on them. I have been looking around to find more info. Any suggestions?

Amtrak California F59PHI (trying to sell it too)

I don't comprehend how you guys can possibly need the numbers of engines that you do. Some of you own more motive power that some Class 1 railroads. With a total mileage in the units, you have no need for that many engines. Most of them must be gathering dust.
Need?!  Need?!  What does "need" have to do with it Shock.   BTW - At the moment my entire roster is in storage. Hopefully they are all well packed enough so that they are NOT gathering dust.

You could post pictures of them and ask for people to identify them.  If they are diesels there is a book called "The Diesel Spotters Guide" that is most useful.   I have two copies, one on the reference desk and one in the car for use in the field.

Lets put it this way as I have no real desire to count the amount of Engines I have ( I inherited alot) I have two 6-Foot book cases that are filled from top to bottom with locomotives.

I don't know what the total amount is but it is alot.

Are many of those still armor yellow, or have you culled the herd to mostly D&RGW yet?

Everytime this thread comes up, I post my latest additoions.  In this case it would be an AB set of Broadway Limited F7s painted in NP freight pine tree scheme, and an undecorated F7B unit.   I have been very disapointed in the sound.  The prime mover doesn't bog down like a real one does on acceleration, and even though the locomotive clearly sports Nathan 5 chime horns, the sound unit is a wabco honker!   One would think a company selling their products on the "sound" would be careful to make certain the sound matches the unit they put it in.

Would you like pictures? I have around $15,000.00 more or less. tied up in my engines and rolling stock. If you want pictures they can be provided:

This is one of (3) engine areas.

The Brass are in the roundhouse I am shooting over.

Some people collect engines, I have seen over 200 in one collection ALL Brass. Sorry but the Life Like crowd has a problem grasping the size of a collection when someone wants one.

And PLEASE do not pick on BOZO he was a hero to my kids Clown [:o)]

Everytime this thread comes up I post my latest aquisition.   Since it came up just last month I thought, wow I'm actually not going to have anything to post.  But no, wait, what is this?  A brand new Proto 2000 E-7A with sound just arrived two days ago!  CB&Q #9917B.  I got it to pull one of the Empire Builders (by Walthers) that I'm assembling.

Big Smile [:D] Great, I just ordered a PCM Y6b and will probably also order the Brass Big boy from them. I am finding myself taking all the older engiens, even if I had converted them to DCC, and replacing them with the latest sound version that comes out. All my wife says is "You need to build some display shelves."

Roster (All DCC):

 (2) SP SD45T-2

SP GP40

SP MD15AC

AMTRAK AMD 103

AMTRAK California Dash 8-32BW

Nothing great but it is perfect for the soon to be built layout of a fictional segment of the San Joaquin Valley Route

Why did you resurrect a 3 year old DEAD thread? It would have been better to start over. Modellers engine rosters change month to month.

Crandell can you lock this thread? I'll start over with a new one if need be.

Maybe we can refer to this as a Lazarus thread.

LOL. No foul, just start a new one. It's good to see that the old threads aren't just wasting away and someone still reads them. Smile

I agree.  It's probably a good idea to start a new thread - especiallly since this one was originally started nearly 6-1/2 years ago.
