A couple days ago a BNSF train derailed after hitting a semi at a rural crossing about 15 miles from our house.

Swamped at work this morning, so I only have a second. I don't know if anyone has noticed the Calling Dr Wayne thread, but I'm curious if anyone knows where Dr Wayne lives or perhaps his last name. He stopped posting to both here and another forum he was a regular in at about the same time in December. I fear the worst.

Cold day here. We had a storm go through yesterday but only caught the edge of it so not too much snow.
I have Dr. Wayne's name and address. I will send him an email. Seem to recall a note from someone on another forum that he was having computer problems. I am reluctant to phone as it has been a couple of years since we last communicated. I will advise if I get a reply.
No plans for today. Just keep the bird feeders topped up. The suet logs need re-filling every couple of hours.

#1 son came out for dinner last night and we had a good visit watching the hockey game and we talked for hours. With the position he holds in his career, he is years ahead of what a 25-year-old would normally be holding. He has to present to a large global audience this week. He is an excellent public speaker, he'll, be okay.
Not sure how this week is going to unfold, for a retired guy I seem to have to fix a lot of things for other people. Thank goodness for Lawyers and Accountants they are worth every penny.

The bird feeders here are "cat TV" at our house. The cats sit by the windows and watch. They are indoor cats so no harm is done. In a few weeks it will be spring and we'll sit on the deck and join the cats in birdwatching. We're on a major migratory path, so we have a constantly changing population, and the tidal marsh out back gives a lot of habitat.
The geese are mostly gone and I anticipate the arrival of the egrets pretty soon. We have a couple of herons that winter over.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

What a spectacular day in the snow and sunshine today. I went out to see how the daffodils did in the snow we got and the dog kept going.
In the 100-acre wood the trails were a smorgasbord of animal tracks but no trace of a people track. Solitude at its best.
The wife asked how many pork chops I wanted, will six do? We'll see.

The robins are here in huge numbers again. I haven't seen the blue heron yet. I have not yet driven out to see the sandhill cranes. By the middle of the month, there should be several hundred thousand there for a week or two, stopping on their way south.
My wife and I went car shopping yesterday, and came home with a car. She pretty much knew what she wanted, but we didn't know if she would find it. Luckily for me, she found one exactly like she wanted without spending days looking for it.
It's her car, but I wrote the check. I always get heartburn when I write one of those checks with a comma in the amount.
The good news is I got rid of the Durango which was on it's last legs. I'm sure the dealership will junk it for parts. I now get to drive the Expedition as my car. One good thing about the whole deal -- her car will get double the mileage the Expedition gets. While that's still not great, it's a lot better.
Today -- more checks written for sales tax, registration, and insurance on the car. My state is not cheap for things like this.
For all of you with health issues, I continue to hope you have successful treatments and can resume a stress-free life building railroads.

Cold here today, only about 10F. Expecting another snow storm tomorrow.
Nice to hear robins are on their way but they better pause before coming here as it is still winter and could be for another month or more.
Mike, robins aren't seed eaters. If they can't find worms or bugs they will eat fruit. We used to have a Westie who loved frozen crab apples that had fallen. She would even dig them out of the snow. If they weren't frozen she wouldn't touch them. She would spit out the pits and stems.
John, what make of vehicle did you buy? Curious minds want to know.

It's bedtime on the Great Plains. I'm not looking forward to the time change this weekend. I hate changing the time twice a year.
Charlie, my wife bought a Ford Explorer. I had no preference and I let her pick what she wanted. I've driven it, and it seems like a good drive. It has a learning curve with all the new safety features that the Expedition didn't have.
I have no idea how good or bad a car it is. It seems like most cars today are reliable. My main takeaway is that my wife is happy with her choice, and I am happy she won't be visiting the gas station quite as often.
A Ford Explorer is a good vehicle John, a consistant track record of dependability over the years.
Our Jeremy in finance in North Dakota is setting us up with a Jeep. So it looks like we're getting a Jeep. Ain't going to argue with that one, but certainly like my other Ford.

My daughter's know how I'm getting a bit tired of just peanut butter, and never thought I'd see the day. Can't have nuts or seeds anymore as a diverticulitis condition could flair up.
My youngest got me macadamian nut butter, and my oldest got me Brazil nut and pistachio nut butter.
Sure do appreciate it, cuz these nut spreads are quite good on a Trisket

It's time to get some things finished today. Tomorrow is the annual visit to the dermatologist to get my head and face beat up. I'm glad it only happens once a year. I guess I should have worn a hat when I was a young hippie.
I usually drive my cars until they drop over dead. As a result, I've never had one of the cars with no ignition key. It will take me a while to realize I don't have to dig a key out of my pocket to unlock or start the car.
Glad there aren't any cameras when hard-headed me was sitting in the driver's seat, pushing the start button, and nothing happening. Of course, the dashboard display lights up and says to step on the brake and then push the button. Maybe I should have read that before I said some unkind things to the car.
We are scheduled to get some needed rain tomorrow, but mixed with it might be some snow. Nothing much is predicted, but I sure don't want to see the flakes.
I've gone against my daughters' advice -- yesterday I climbed the ladder to clean out the roof gutters. One of these days they will drive to our house and take away my ladder. Of course, that will be payback, since I did that to my father.

Yeah, John, there's some acclimating to do with those key fobs. The GF would think she locked her car, but she was too close to the car when she did it, so it didn't lock. No sense telling her, of course, because she already knows everything. Overall, they're an improvement. My car will only shut off if my foot is on the brake. Hers will only shut off if her foot or NOT on the brake. A bit of consistency would have been appreciated.
Just waiting for the snow to start. Expecting 5" or so.
Mike, our suet is only eaten by woodpeckers and nuthatches. Seed is eaten by chickadees, sparrows and finches so seed and suet isn't interchangeable. We go through a tube of suet every day. In winter we use a suet thar is soft and comes in a plastic tube.
My car has a fob you have to insert in the dash to be able to push the start button so not a key of old but sort of a transition to keyless. The fob has the buttons for the door locks, etc.
Another quiet day. I have started reading a book, Agicourt by Bernard Cornwell. He writes historical fiction, fictional characters in actual historical events.
John, sounds like a nice vehicle. My wife doesn't drive so we have only needed one car. She did have a license but quit driving when she was 19 after an accident. She wasn't hurt but it shook her up a lot.

John, the Ford Explorer is the mainstay of the RCMP up here, of course, they get the Police version. Sometimes there will be 6 or 8 of these in our driveway as the wife has meetings with dog handlers from various Police and Customs institutions. The neighbours always think there is some major Police incident going on. The only incident is the consumption of donuts and coffee.
I went to book the limo for my son's wedding and was surprised by the cost, it was not nearly as much as I thought it would be. We need the super stretch that holds 14.
There is a bit of a learning curve with new vehicles that is for sure. The stupid thing I have done twice now is get out and leave the thing turned on because being a Hybrid, it makes no noise when it sits there. Both times I had been sitting in the car for quite a while before I got out while the wife was on the phone or computer so I have since learned to be more attentive. When possible you should unlock the car by touching the door handle and also lock it by touching the door handle and avoid using the push buttons so a thief cannot get a digital copy of your fob and steal your car. I love the Hybrid, it is more expensive to buy but in our case, that difference will be paid off quickly. The drop in what we pay for gas every month was huge. We drove to Calgary and back and got 50MPG which is great for a 7-passenger SUV.
I spent yesterday putting up a new electric fence around part of the property, partly to keep the dogs in but also to keep the larger wildlife out. We had a friend on Vancouver Island lose one of her Goldens to a cougar not long ago. There has been a bear poking around lately, not causing any trouble at all but the zapper fence is an ounce of prevention. Our big dog run is about an acre in size and I got that done.
The wife is off to for medical appointments and I am off to the trainroom.

One thing I like about the Tesla is the car knows when I am there by connecting to my cell phone. If I try to get in the car and I don't have the cell phone with me, all hell breaks loose! Horn blows and it takes my picture for future reference to the police if I need it..... (Also scares the crap out of me until I figure out what happened.) I had two hybreds before I got the Tesla and loved the gas milage that gave me, especially with the Chevy Volt. Comparison with Gas for the the Tesla says that in the last 30 days if I was driving on Gas I would have spent $126. If I was buying the electric at current prices I would have spent $56. Difference... $70. If I say I got the electric off the roof of my house? Cost, $0....... That wouldn't be really honest but it does look good for comparison I guess. The panels have paid for themselves easily by now......

Ya, that almond butter is spendy enough at the grocery store Mike. Haven't a clue what these exotic nut butters flip for, but they sure are good.
Was bummed out the last two holiday seasons, not being able to use the nut cracker on those assorted nuts that come in the red mesh bag. It's kinda like a sport trying to get em out in one piece
Good to have somewhat of a replacement now, but ya can't take a spoon out of the jar for a quick snack like ya can with peanut butter. These small jars of nut butter are a bit too rich to eat it like that.

A good day in the room today, 30 pieces cut and glued, 26 of which required tweezers. It took three Gord albums to get done, unlike TF, I could never make a living in construction. After two hours on the phone with the accountant trying to fix the Estate of the dysfunctional, it was just what I needed.
