Since the new forum software stopped displaying post counts, I stopped caring.

But for the record, i was second to Jeffrey Big Smile

For the millionth time it seems, the green bar is horribly annoying. Oh, it's a different color on Classic Trains, and on Trains. I understand the need for ads like that - for people that don;t already have a multiyear subscription! It also really slows down the page refresh when on a less than speedy connection, so wherever back in the vast server infrastructure it pulls from, something is very slow, or the type of graphic it is makes it generate a lot of bytes to send over the wire for not saying a whole lot. On slower connections, clicking the X to close the bar vastly speeds up page refreshes. It really needs to go, or be tied to user accounts so it only shows up for non-subscribers.

If they can't get it right, then they ought to just drop the post count altogether.

But, apparently, no one in charge is listening - - - about the inaccurate post count or the annoying banner.

Don't forget they don't display our locations anymore too. That was really disappointing to see that go by by.

It really helps to know where each of us is from. In other words, new format still sucks.

When I signed on to the forum back in 2006 to get help with my return to the hobby, I never thought I would hit even a 100 post in my time here. If there were no post count and you told me I was at 2700 I wouldn't believe it.

For curiosities sake I like the post count as I find it a bit of an eye opener. However if it did disappear I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over it. I am just glad I have had all of you to nurse maid me along through the few trials and tribulations I have had.Beer

I got some cheese to go with my Whine and I have no problem with the banner and clicking the X. ...

Rich

Same here.  In fact none of the ads bother me as they are all about something - model railroading - that I'm interested in.

Even though my post count is higher than many others, it will never come close to being the largest so I see no reason to be competitive with it.  (If you want to get into competitive model railroading, join the NMRA and enter their contests.)  But I do agree that it should work properly if we're going to have it.

Enjoy

I understand the objective, but I find the banner annoying and assume the existing tabs are sufficient and/or those who view or participate in the forums are sufficiently self-motivated without the banner.  Therefore, I'd vote to trash it.

However, MR owns the bat and the ball,

Personally, I click the x, it goes away, life goes on.

In that light I find the quote above to be the wisest so far (and yes, I've read all 3 pages)  I can agree with the annoyance, but lest we forget we do not own the forum, we are mere guests here. Atlas's forum is gone, and Yahoo groups is getting increasingly difficult to navigate. If this is all we have to put up with we should consider ourselves lucky.

As far as post count, its like "badges?, we don't need no stinkin badges!" Let the post stats run in the background. Once you join, you get a yellow "rookie stripe" under your name that goes away after say, 500 posts. After that, no stripe.  By then, either you are familiar with the folks here, or at least the moderators know you!Wink

I agree Michael. I like to know where on the planet people are from. I have added a map to my signature. I am about an hour SE of Vancouver. Though like Winnie the Pooh I am originally from Winnipeg. Dad got smart and moved us to the West Coast when I was two.

It's that way on purpose Mon Ami!  I use to have a map showing much better detail of where the Batcave was located and found the bar fridge in the train room was always "sans beer". Smile, Wink & Grin

It's always interesting to me how a post can generate such a variety of topics.  This post started in April and was a rant about the green banner - which is VERY aggravating - but MR doesn't want to listen to its readers.  Then I read one about Video Plus not working which is another recurring theme, a a few about post counters and now we have the Bat Cave sign.  Maybe that's one of the best part about the forums.

Thinking about the Bat Cave sign, maybe we should start one about interesting/unusual signs that we have seen and if they can be used on our railroads but it's probably been done.  The downside is that to read it we would have to get rid of the green bar which is VERY aggravating - or did I already say that???????

You have a point. Sad thing is, I can think about a ton real signs but I am afraid I would get me  tossed out of the forum.  But since I can't leave well enough alone, how about Fancy Gap, Va., or a well know center of Amish activity in Pennsylvania.....

Ain't that the truth Frank. If you removed all the threads with topics that had been discussed previously, there would be a threadless forum. We'd all have to go work on our layouts.Indifferent
Personally I could care less if a thread of mine strays from the original topic. Like Sheldon says "it's called conversation". I've always had my maydays and pleas for help responded to post haste and enjoyed the jocularity that often accompanied the responses.
If I didn't want interaction (conversation) with others, there is not much you can't find out by just using Google.Beer

The two things that I enjoy most about the forum are the banners at the bottom of the page that get in my way and the diminshing post count.  My third favorite thing are the occasional DVDs that show up in my mail box unsolicited with the comment that, legally, they are a gift, followed by the barrage of letters asking me to either pay for the DVD or return it.   Dead

So I have a question - since this isn't the first time we have gone on extensively about these irritations, why doesn't MR do something about it?  Oh wait, I forgot.....profit.

Now why do I think this thread is about to be locked?

What's the point in locking it now?
