can "Subscribe|Renew|Digital Edition" banner be disabled?
Posted by gregc on Sunday, April 14, 2013 11:13 AM

i need to click on the X to clear the banner that appears at the bottom of the screen each and every time I view a forum page.  it blocks the screen behind it.

Is there something I can do to disable this from occurring each and every time?

Isn't there enough advertisement on the forum pages?

I thought it would go away when I gave them my address, but it is still popping up constantly.Sigh

I just clicked the 'X' and the banner ad retreated to a black box lower right corner. It stays there as long as I'm logged in. Since I'm logged in all the time I haven't had to click it again.

When I click on the "X" on the forum home page that disables the ad for each subsequent page I open.

I understand the objective, but I find the banner annoying and assume the existing tabs are sufficient and/or those who view or participate in the forums are sufficiently self-motivated without the banner.  Therefore, I'd vote to trash it.

However, MR owns the bat and the ball, so if they feel it's necessary and worth the annoyance, perhaps they could at least move the MR graphic to the corner so it doesn't interfere with content.

I agree, it is annoying!  Annoying your customers is an interesting way to promote your business.  However, it does seem to be the standard, now-a-days.

Me too.  It's easy just to click on the X but it is a little annoying.

Do you have an ad blocker? If not you need to get one. I'm using Simple Adblock with Firefox. It did a great job of making the pop-up ad at the top of the page vanish.

It is a small thing and does not annoy a LION at all. LIONS cannot be annoyed at anything less than the zookeeper not showing up on time with a raw lump of meat.

It cannot go into the corner, because the way that HTML works. You and I might be looking at the website on a 1600 or better flat screen monitor, others may still be using an 800 px CRT monitor. For those people, it already is in the corner. For the rest of us it is at the LEFT edge of the actual content. So as far as their web master is concerned it IS ALREADY IN THE LOWER LEFT CORNER.

I know this is really annoying for us subscribers. Why not advertise this to non-subscribers?

I used adblock, and now I only see a black box on the lower right side. But still annoying!

I'm not sure only annoying people who have yet to give you money is the way to go.

Maybe they should stop trying to jam more advertising on the page and divert their IT department to fixing problems with PAID Subscriber content (like Video Plus suddenly not working). Angry

OK, then the solution is easy.  In addition to requiring users to disable Flash so we can watch seamless videos again, MR should require all users to trash their flats and return to CRT monitors.  Some problems are easy to solve if you simply approach them the right way!

I got some cheese to go with my Whine and I have no problem with the banner and clicking the X. I always sign out when done posting anyway.

Firefox and ad block plus are good.

Post count is all about Male Ego which is much to large anyway. Ask your significant other.

Some people profess not to care about their post count.  So be it.

But since the post count does appear, the least they could do is get it right.

Otherwise, what is the point of including a post count in the first place.

We would all be better off without it than to have it be inaccurate.

Now briefly, back to the original topic.  I was all set to install an ad blocker, until I read some of the fine print.  I use Google Chrome as my browser, and Google recommends "Ad Blocker Plus".  Well, in addition to the personal data collection activities described in their "Privacy Policy", Ad Blocker Plus lists as "attributes" that "It can access your data on all websites", and "It can access your tabs and browsing activity".  Sounds like an "invasion of privacy" to me.  I think I'll just suffer with the green subscribe ad bar.

Post count is all about Male Ego

Not really.

If the forum didn't have a post count feature, no one would care and no one would know how many messages he had posted.  If there were no post count, but someone was keeping track of his number of posts, that would be a case of Male Ego.

But the fact of the matter is that there is a post count feature.  And because there is a post count feature, most people take notice of their post count.  Some feel offended when there post count is inaccurate, especially when it constantly diminishes.

Quite frankly, I get tired of hearing some people proclaim that they don't care and belittling those who do care.
