BlownoutCylinder: Well, it's not my first song ever. Last year at school our music teacher taught us how to play the guitar, for maybe twice a week for three months. We learned how to play songs like Louie Louie and Hey Jude... I only remembered the A and E chord when we got the guitar, and didn't remember the songs. So technically it isn't my first song, rather, my first REAL song.

I agree but; the “local” railroads ran the herald on the rectangular tenders in the middle and on the Vanderbilt tenders they ran them on the forward flat half. Trust me I just finished watching 9 video tapes of Great Lakes railroads in the last 7 days before I installed the heralds.
I did see in the videos the rail road’s started covering steel coil loads in 1956! I’ve always thought those didn’t start until late 60’s early 70’s.
I just finished numbering the 2-10-2s and the 4-8-2. Now I need to do number boards and touch up some paint.
Speaking of heralds, anyone ever notice pre 1960 (99% of the time) the southern railroads have their herald on the “left end” of freight cars with the reporting marks on the right and Great Lakes rail road’s have them opposite with the reporting marks on the left and the herald or slogan on the right?

Well, Jerry, I don't think we got any of those white flakes in Cape G. that Paul sent along (but then again, we're 120-125 miles south of St. Louis, so in the winter sometimes Perryville - 30 miles north from here - will get snow, and we won't). I even asked several people after church if they saw anything, but nope. We did have a temp in the low 40's this morning, and I'm betting the wind chilld dropped that to feeling like the 30's. You hear that, Johnboy and CN Charlie? Grab your shorts, fishing poles, and swimming trunks and c'mon down! Just watch out for Chris' little snow patch on the way here...
Attaboy, congrats! Now, will she let you take vacations later on to NMRA conventions, shortline RR's, etc.? But at least she knows what she's getting into, and appears to be okay with that. (Maybe you could check out motel locations for the honeymoon that are close to RR tracks, reserve there, and get some railfanning in? )

I've been delaying because I want to have them install an acoustic pickup at the same time, and the pickup was $130 when I checked (probably a coupla years ago). Maybe I should check what a good pickup would run now, hmmm?
TMarshWell, woke up this morning' to an un-determined amount of snooow. About 8 inches on the table on the back porch. About 6 inches on the back porch rails. About 3 inches in the back yard. About an inch in the front yard. None in the house and about 3 feet where the village filled the foot of the drive up. I guess the Lord will find a way for us to get to church. Oh look! A snow shovel has appeared in the garage! My hands just fit this snow shovel!

Got rid of one box full of old Apple videos (had accumulated them from when I was the user group contact person, many moons ago). Tossed them in the Dumpster. I'd been deluding myself into thinking I was gonna convert the VHS tapes to DVDs - except to do that, I'd need a faster 'puter, a working DVD-/+R drive in it, and a lot of time. So I have another 2 or 3 square feet of floor space showing. That was easy, now I just have the rest of the apartment to go.
Back to MRR'ing, I got out the trailer park office kit to see about starting on that (the NuComp one), but it turned out that I need to use CA or epoxy for that (and I'm out of the CA. So back in the plastic bag with everything for now, and I'll break out the epoxy, and probably use my magnetic gluing jig on that this next week/weekend.
I didn't get back to my Walthers modular warehouse that I'd sprayed the previous weekend to brick red. Need to check the location of the pilasters on one side wall, so may need to spray that again after I pull them and glue all the pilasters in the right places. I'll be glad when spring actually gets here in another couple of weeks, and I can use my outdoor 'spray booth' again.
I've been frustrated lately, because I cannot find my Pelle Soeberg/Kalmbach book - I had it out 2-4 weeks ago, but haven't found it with my other MRR books or in my book stack in the bedroom. Another reason to tackle the clutter in the apartment.
Well, I'd better get moving for now. Clutter awaits! Prayers continue for those in need (and we know who we are, right?).

Good evening, been afew days since I stopped by for a root beer. Now that the snowpack has all melted, we have very busy clearing away the tremendous damage done by the December ice storm. So far I have used 3 gallons of fuel in the chain saw, that is a lot of cutting and there is more to go. In between all the outside work I am still making progres on the layout. This week looks like many days with showers, so I should be able to get more done on the layout.
For those looking for Der John, Nova Scotia got hit last week with the worst snowstorm of the winter, so he has been a little busy digging out.
J.P. Schill has made the right decision, once a pitcher gets into his 40's the elasticity in the throwing arm is fading fast.

Hello folks: I haven't read anythig since page 41 yesterday, so don't know your current news. However, I do have some photos of the completed RR themed birdhouse I've been working on for Kris' Arts Society. I had to extend the real estate from their standard to do anything worthwhile. The whole thing is "Folk Art", so please don't get on my case for prototypical correctness, besides, I'm not into steam, and did this from memory of genral principles....sort of time will tell if any birds ever nest in it!

Moved the last of the saved (white) foam into the train room. Think it might actually work as a base to carve the vulcano from. Sure will make a heck of a mess short term though.

Eric- Nice buildings so far. I have no room for large buildings. I wish I had thought of that when I built the bench work. I pretty much just built benchwork for the room and added track. Sizes of buildings and industries you would like. Something to keep in mind, for those of you who haven't started yet.
Mark- I'm a Fender guy myself. ‘52 Telecaster, Vintage series to be exact. I like the tone and the feel. Personal preference, not knocking any other type or brand. That's what makes music great. We don't all want to sound like Vaughn or Page. Or do we?
Der John- Well I think the birdhouse looks great. I hear ya got a wee bit of the white stuff up there? All's well I hope.
Jeff- Um have we seen the police station yet? Cause I'm thinking it may not look like we expect. Especially since Ezra's son is the cop. Wouldn't he be the Chief. I noticed you said "operational" Do you have something in mind? I'm picturing a litter of old broke police cars out back. As one dies, get another car. Cheap. They must have got a good deal on that one cause it don't look to bad.

I have ballasted the track I replaced, and am back in action. It is so good to get rid of the derailment problem there. Also, I am building a CB&Q branchline baggage/mail car.

Paul, I know how the critters can turn up their noses if the hay is not the same, but you are right, they will eat when they get hungry. I assume that spring is late in your neck of the woods, too.

We are done with the show for this year........ It was fun! The Sunday Matinee always has some surprises. This year they did "Kiss Me Kate". For those not familiar with the show, it is set in the 1940's and is a "Play within the Play" plots. It is about a road show of "The Taming of the Shrew" by Shakspeare. Act 2 scene 3 is set in the main room of Petruchio's house. Dinner is being served and Petruchio takes issue that the meat set before them is burned. While he is chewing out the servants, Kate (the shrew) takes a string of sausages and tucks them into her...... uh....... bosom (the best term I can muster....). Shortly thereafter, Petruchio grabs the string of sausage links and pulls them out...... and tosses them off stage much to the anger of Kate. This has brought some great laughter from the audience both nights. Today I noticed the young lady taking a bit more time to stuff the sausage into ....... When Petruchio removed the sausage out came a bra at the end. Took 5 minutes for the audience to recover and totally destroyed the management of sound and lights for a while (very hard to properly do the cues when you can't see because you are laughing so hard tears are coming down your face. I glanced over at the director and his wife sitting in the back of the auditorium, they were completely doubled up and trying to catch their breath. Gotta love it! The leading lady and the leading man in the show are an item as well and I can tell you enjoyed their roles!
Oh, much of the set for the show was made from 4' x 8' sheets of 1" styrofoam. I asked the director what plans he had for it after the show. Since they have no place large enough to store it, he said probably it would be put into the dumpster and that was sad because that blasted stuff was expensive. I will end up giving them a donation to the Drama Club and taking home about 10 sheets of the stuff tomorrow..... Should be more than enough to finish all the scenery on the SLOW (and maybe sell some to some other local modelers). I also happened to mention that to the Father of the leading lady, who is a local minister and a fine violinist who played in the show as well. He was fascinated that I am into model railroading and wants to get together with me to give him some pointers on construction scratch built structures. He is planning on building a diorama of biblical scenes for his church. The foam has been painted on one side but that shouldn't be any problem.
Mark nice ax! I bet you are going to enjoy it. I have to find time to get out my Cordoba Classic and practice!

***Paul & Sue, agreed, cows will get used to just about anything. My wife says, "it's hard to kill a cow". When we buy hay we always find out if it's Horse hay or Cow hay (weed free & clean VS nasty with mold). The latter can make a horse mighty sick or even kill it, but cows have superior digestive systems.

Jim (and others that may be asking...) - RINGETTE is similar in look to Ice Hockey, using a specialty stick (no blade) and a ring, different rules, primarily played by girls / women - originated in Canada about 45 yrs ago I believe - my daugther has played it for the past 6 yrs, and although only 11 yrs old, perhaps getting scholarships will pay for university. check out shuswapringette.ca for further details

Good morning. It's 47 and partly cloudy. The high will be around 75 and it will be partly cloudy. Things went well at the BBQ yesterday AFTER the grilling was well underway. It had been decided that a charcoal grill would be used. I prefer gas grills myself. Anyhow, the appointed chef (not me) loaded the grill with what I believed to be an inordinate amount of match-lite charcoal. He then lit said charcoal and closed the lid neglecting to open the draft on the lid. Five minutes later there was only a slight amount of heat from the grill. Without thinking about what kind of Pandora's box he might be opening the chef snatched the lid up and, you guessed it, WHHOOOM! Flames shot five feet straight up and about two feet to all sides. I lost half the hair on my right arm, the chef lost his eyes lashes, eye brows, the forward part of his hairline and his composure. One of my sisters cats which had been sitting nearby jumped three feet into the air and four feet back, landing on my niece's pit bull and proceeded to tear the dog a new one as this must somehow all be his fault. As the somewhat bewildered dog ran for the hills I slammed the grill lid down and opened the draft, losing most of the rest of the hair on my arm in the process. The poor chef was the object of much ribbing for the rest of the day. On the layout front I tore down the pedestrian bridge. I used part of it to make a stairway to Ezra's home over his gas station. As to what today holds in store, well, as they say, I'll know that when the time comes. Todd; I kinda tossed the rules out the window this time. The layout itself has no written trackplan. I know this isn't the way its normally done. This time I focused on one scene to start. I'm following the basic idea of the plant and track work. This way I can have large buildings rather than have to over compress scenes. The scenes I have in mind won't necessarily follow any geographic line, but be more of a series of displays that happen to be connected by rail. Hmm, I guess that's what most layouts are...... My big plan is for the other end of the attic where a passenger terminal will rise to display my passenger eqiupment. That's far in the future.

A dark gray, chilly, damp, sunless day here in the Finger lakes so far today. High is only going up to 39°F with a low tonight around 29°F. We will have a bit of rain along with some snow and winds between 20 and 30 MPH. I think I will see if the model railroad is still intact down cellar..... Probably move some trains back to staging that were left in the yard a week ago at the openhouse and then decide what I can do next with what I have in stock.
Jeffrey now I know where they got the Ham for the show......... ROFLMAO
Now Garry and Rob, why would anyone say anything bad about Berkshire Locos? They are wonderful (just a few years too modern to used on my SLOW.....). Hope that's OK with Duke!
I have a dentist appointment this afternoon (cleaning) and we finish striking the set tonight. One of the parents was taking photos of the sound and light work last night. As soon as he sends me some copies I'll post one just to everyones appetite in check......
