Rob, if you have a H-L anywhere near you, they've started carrying (Floquil? W-S?) what look like marker pen sets, and there's a rail 'weathering' set that I've bought. Haven't tried it out yet, though. You might look at them if you have a 'Lobby any place close by... Hey, nice HO scale clowns there... On your plan, I may not be much help, as I'd try to figure out how to do BOTH the natural bridge and the trestle.. Best wishes for you on that. You could put the two choices on a dart board and throw blindfolded at it - the one it's closer to, is the one you go with.

Question: One of the wife's rr-crossings has the old bell ringing system, set off from pressure on the track. I hooked it up to ac terminal and all you hear is the loud motor with faint (and way to rapid) bell ringing. Anyone know of a cheap way to lessen the ac current to slow down the motor? Wondering if a small wall-warts/transformers might work? Will that little motor work on DC or only ac? Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Well, I've looked at the costs of building my Favre switching layout, so I'm planning a 3x6 layout to build so I can run trains, do a touch of switching, and still have plenty of spending money etc. I'll build one side, then later on, build the other.

jeffrey-wimberly notably adding railings to my GD30, a 6 axle short range version of a GP30.
No offense, but a friend of mine was RR shop worker and he called the GD30 a GD30 because a lot of the major electrical equipment was hard to access.

Looks like I need to go back and do some work on an older section of the layout. I'm getting repeated derailments in the same location. Those nasty little gremlins drive me crazy. I have one curve in a hard to reach location that is a problem with certain cars but not all cars. if course, such problems commonly take palce in hard to reach locations.

I'll build the side w/ the scrap yard and plastic footwear first, then the ethanol plant later on. I'll also be ordering an airbrush, so this will serve to showcase those models. I may change from the ethanol plant to a 1960s/1970s/1980s midwest plains town (like CNW, w/ a grain elevator and some other industries; I'd have to research).

Sawyer, looks pretty good. On the left side, are those outside tracks at two different levels, or do you have a crossover there? On some of your sidings (in both parts) it wouldn't be too hard if you wanted to, to add another siding off of one of those (plastics plant, or in the future part on the left side).

I accidently brought them too close on the plan; they'll stay parallel. I think I'll stick with the current spur arrangement on the scenicked side (more turnouts=more $ needed for track), but on the other side, I have no idea whether i'll stick with that track arrangement or not.

Evenin' Folks!
Been a long day........ Got the electric circuit put in this morning for the train room. now all the electric being used by the layout is on one switch so when i leave at night I turn that one switch off and everything from the workbench to the lighting systems, to the DDC, Tortiose moters, everthing is off. No more rolling over in bed at 2AM wondering If I should check to see that the solding iron is unplugged......
Then it was off to a Sci Tek Camp meeting at the Scout Office. Had to leave that eary to get over to School for 5+ hours of dress rehearsal. Tomorrow I have to be back at shool for an assembly program for the high school kids........ Tomorrow night is the second dress rehearsal (with an audience of senior citizens and Friday, saturday, and Sunday is the show. Sure is good to be ritered and have nothing to do.
Well, off to catch a couple hours of sleep.......

Well, with all this rain, wind and eventually thunderstorms, it's time to unplug the puter. Wouldn't bother except I still have to replace that exploded back-UPS battery and a surge protector alone doesn't cut it here. We sometimes get many momentary lapse of power which isn't good for a puter.

Got a good laugh awhile ago when I was doing some homework and realized I had 70 algebra problems due tommorow... Right on cue, Highway to Hell by AC/DC starts playing... Perfect timing.
Jim: Yeah, I'll try and get in more... That play was one effort, let me tell you. A Midsummer's Night Dream by Shakespeare set in the '50s with some rock and roll added... And getting the part of Lysander didn't help with free time! Anyways, now that that's over, I can enjoy spring break in a couple of weeks...
Don't think I'll do anything during spring break. My dad is down for a kidney transplant the wednesday before then, so, I don't think we'll be doing much.
Oh, and did you guys hear about SP 4449's latest excursion? 4449 will be taking a 2,500 mile long trip all the way to Michigan for Trainfest 2009 in July. I hope I can cut her off somewhere down by Portland, and get some footage. That'd be a nice railfanning opportunity.

Ah, yer doing my heart good there Son... anything I can help with on the research, just let me know. I've got a bunch of track charts for Iowa, grain elevator pics, etc. More than glad to help. 'Tis good to see someone else even just thinking about keeping the Ball and Bar alive!
While I'm not a big "round and around" fan, I think you've got a good plan here. Again, as I've said before, keep in mind my incredibly, darn-near legendary ineptitude and perpeptual failure with track plans. A big thing for me is being able to do switching, to actually have the train(s) do something. I think you've got that covered nicely with the various sidings.
In fact, you might've just given me an ideer... But, for now, here's a couple of shots from the small, midwest plains town of Morrison, Illinois. I spent a year there under the guise of attending drafting school. Instead, I spent most of my time trackside...with a major in "railfanning," and a minor in...well, we'll call it "liquid studies."

My son finished his FFA project by showing his hog yesterday at the Star of Texas Livestock Show here in Austin, TX. I was the proudest dad in the barn! I just wish I was going to be putting all of that bacon and ham in my freezer....

Garry, thanks for the kind words! Morrison taught me a few things: I HATED drafting, and really loved photography. Would you believe those shots were taken with a Pentax point 'n shoot? It was a high school graduation present in 1987, and I burned through a LOT of good 'ole Kodak Gold 200.
I think it's time to call it a day. I covered the monthly school board meeting tonight in Oxford. 2 hours of jaw-flappin' by the board, but little hard data to make articles out of. I practically BEGGED the secretary to send me something/anything I can use. For example, they approved the 2009-2010 budget...but didn't say HOW MUCH it was, what went up, what went down... Now, I know they hashed all THAT out in a work session...but still, I mean, geez Louise! Give a poor workin' reporter something to work with...
Tomorrow will be a LONG day of note translating, e-mail monitoring, and tape transcribing. Chloe, better tell the day shift crew to have IV coffee ready to go. I'm gonna need it.

Aw heck, one more from 'ole Morrison... One afternoon, on my way back from the Hardee's, I encountered a true gentleman. Turns out, he was one of the crossing guards for the CNW in Morrison. His job was to man the watch tower and drop the gates.

I was looking in a old box of train stuff and found a old Chessie caboose. I thought it might look good on the layout. It has a few broken pieces, but right now it sits on a siding.

Good morning.It's 53 and mostly cloudy here. The high will be around the mid 70's and there's a good chance of thunderstorms.Received a 'Dream, Plan, Build' DVD in the mail yesterday. I've heard a lot of good things about this series so I took the time to check it out. I must say that I was not impressed. The featured layouts are nice and there's a lot of good advice given but it's nothing that I haven't already seen and learned online. The medallion they sent along with the DVD is nice and looks good among my other collectibles. The DVD however will be going back today. We had a pretty intense storm blow through here last night and my yard is now covered with a thin layer of pine straw and microsporangia (those little pollen things) and a bunch of pine cones. We didn't get all that much rain but we did get a lot of wind. The showers passed quickly. My father's yard looks like it hasn't been raked in a couple of months. Fact is he just raked it about a week ago.
