Is this where the BRUNCH line stops ?

Good evening all !  It's been a long hiatus from the Diner, from Trains.com (glad I remembered the pw) and from TRAINing in general.  Probably 15 months since I last had a mocha here.

I like the new digs. The website had a facelift.

I see that Phillip was here recently, and I recognize a few other names also - so greetings to all from BC Canada.  I've had to focus on family matters for quite some time, and now it is looking like I can return to some TRAINing in the near future.  So what's new in the Diner and on the forum ? can you wave and say hi if you recognize me.

Over the past while der5997 and I have kept in contact particularly, and I see that he has been busy with the train room.  Perhaps he has also filled you in  on things in my world.  Is der5997 around the Diner at all these days ?  He's motivated me to get back at it - perhaps even rejoin the local club here in the new season.

Still digging my way out of the Snow - reminds me of the day Noah offered to clear the driveway.  It's March and Spring I'm ready for work indoors and outside.

cheers, krump

Krump and JP pleasure to meet you.  I'm one of the new folks around here.  Amazing who you come across when you make a wrong turn off the interstate.

Ray, impressive coaches.  I'm not familiar with your layout, but from that photo all I can say is WOW!! Fantastic rail detail!

Chloe-  Sausage and scrambled eggs with a decaf please.

Sunny and frost again, might hit mid 50's this afternoon.

I'll stop by later, Eric

 Good morning.

It's 52 and clear. The high should be around 80 and it will be partly cloudy.

Didn't get any work done on the layout yesterday as I was too busy helping my father get pine straw moved from the rental properties. Personally I'd hand the tenants a rake each and say get with it. As for burning off my yard yesterday (I've received some flak about this from some wishful know-it-alls), it's an accepted method down here for quickly clearing low brush and stimulating new growth as there are plant species here that drop their seeds only after fire has cleared the ground and given the seeds their best chance for growth. The ash also returns much needed nitrogen to the soil without the expense of buying fertilizers that contain things I don't want in my yard. The major down side is my trailer smelled like a stubbed out cigar afterwards. Being as there was almost no wind at all the smoke just hung in the air and finding fresh air was a hit and miss proposition. At times visibility was about five feet. The only time a breeze sprang up was when we absolutely DID NOT need it. Of course the neighbors had been duly alerted beforehand about the burn. I've had the AC going all night with the fresh air port open and it has cleared much of the smell out. Today I'll be helping clear more pine straw from the rental properties IF my father doesn't get called for work that is. He's on call 24/7 and doesn't have any set times for work. With today's economy his chances of having work are much better than mine. I haven't had employment in so long I've forgotten what a time card looks like. Everybody is cutting back. Maybe if we cut back on driving the oil companies will pay us for a change. Probably wishful thinking at best.

Krump!  Long time no see!  Welcome back!  About the only thing thats changed is that the diner moves a LOT more nowadays.  Seems a big thread like the diner tends to get to be doesn't agree with the new forum software and it starts crashing the whole forum.  You'll know it's time to move when you go into a thread and you get an "Ooops" message instead.  Oh, and how do ya like that coming back here just in time to pick up the tab for everyone? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Howmus, I'm sorry for your loss.  It's tough losing those that we're close to, even when we know in the backs of our heads that they can't live forever.  My prayers are with you and yours.

Jeff, I'm suprised that you, the fireman, haven't caught any grief for having a fire get away from you.  I guess people are smart enough to know that those things can be really tricky, even for the experienced!

Oh hi Chloe.....I'll have the country boy breakfast......on Krumps tab!

Good late morning everybody.  Todays high will be about 50.   I guess thats not to bad.

Well I met a guy yesterday that is a really into trains.  He has hundereds of engines, boxcars, etc.  I was amazed.  Over half he hasn't even opened or used.   His layout was pretty nice.  I also caught a freight engine coming by.  I posted a video of it.  "Sorry for the bad video."  I have a nice video camera, but no cord for the computer.  The picture with its 100% better.

He also told me about a friend of his that has a "running operation" on Wednesday's.  He gives you a work order (or whatever the train term is, cant think of it right now", and you have to move the freight.  Just like real life.  Wait at the lights, call to see if your train can move, the whole nine yards!!!!   The guy wouldn't even let you drink a beer while you are working!!!  That realistic.  It sounds real neat.  I would like to see something like that.

Well "HELLO" to all of the people I haven't met yet, and welcome back past Diners!!!!!

Here's that video.  It was a train doing switching along CSX lines.

Robby; I have a wee question--I counted what looked like 7 engines on the point--and ONLY 8 cars---This made Audrey wonder--where some lokes not running? Because if they were then you'd have a engine/car ratio of almost 1:1?---eegh--as far as the video is concerned I thought from my end it looked goodThumbs UpThumbs Up

Coffee in a large UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

***Ray, was sorry to read about Barney. He had a mighty long full life. BTW, I really liked those Overton repaints.

***Philip, good to hear you got some leather working done. How about a pic of that, or would it require an engraved train to qualify as "on topic".Mischief

***Krump, welcome back and don't be a stranger.

Must have had a bad surge last night, as one of my computer backUPS (Powerware 5115) is dead.

Today's high is said to be 69F, so I've opened up the windows. Only drawback is letting in the pollen. Our next power bill had better be cut in half with all the changes we've made. Even put up a line for drying clothes.

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Off to do morning critter rounds. Cowboy Rob

Milk, Chloe.

Just saw a f-unit on the point of a Union Pacfic freight today, It looked dandy in that UP paint scheme. I'm still tryig to figure out how on earth it got here in PA. Oh yeah, does Amtrack do frieght? I saw four of thier Genesys locomotives pulling a frieght a few years ago, and for notch 8 they were going slow for the short length of the train.

Se yall!

Was it an F? or one of the Buisness train Es (Wait, I think they are Es) that UP still runs? I'm sure you know, but I just have to ask. Otherwise a museum coud be sending it to somewhere elase I spose.

Amtrak did dabble in Express work, but those were all Amtrak cars on Passenger trucks. There were 60 foots, MHCs, and some Roadrailers. That dropped out I wanna say about 2003 when they lost the mail contract. Or were these true freight cars? Gennys were geared for Passenger speeds, sothe popular guess would be that they were being held back because of the freight cars.

Ray: I'm sorry to heaar of your loss, but it sounds like it's his gain.

And for yours, Jeff

Mornin' everyone!  Yeh, I think it is still morning.  I slept in this morning....... Slept like a log!  Somebody cut and split it all night long though.  It was a long day yesterday.

Zoe I'll have the #2 Special, over easy on the eggs, homefries, and bacon, with sourdough bread toast if you please.  Dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug (officially my favorite RR) and one of those fresh fruit cups if you please.

Krump, good to see you sir!  I wasn't a frequenter of this diner back then but do remember seeing your posts out in the greater forum.  Glad to see life is letting you get back to the hobby!

Inch, Philip, Rob, Morgan and others, thank you for your thoughts and prayers.  It does mean a lot to me.

Eric, thanks!  I was quite pleased with how the coaches came out.  I found out from a book I bought last fall that the NYOW had their old overton style coaches still in revenue service until 1930.  With that bit of info, I pulled them of the shelf and put them back in operation since the SLOW is set in the late 1920's. A couple of people at the tour yesterday asked me about decals and where I had them done so I pulled out one of the sheets to show them.  One guy looked at them and started to roar.  Then he showed his friends.  They loved the SLOW slogan, "We'll get there sooner or later!"  The railbars on the track have been painted and a bit of overgrowth has been added so it looks like this today:

I'm going to sit in the front booth and wait for the commuter train to pass by!

Hope all of you have a fine day!

Barry............ When I was at that guys house (where the video was taken), he said it was a switching train.  I asked the same thing.  He said it makes stops throughout CSX.  BUT, it still makes you wonder 7 engines to switch?

Mornin' all. Just coffee please the Perfect Wife and I will be dining in Springfield thank you very much.

Krump-Welcome back to the diner. Thanks for the coffee. Just so you know, today I have other plans, but when Philip and I get on the same page, sometimes it can be a pretty good hit to the old virtual credit card of the TOP‘er. I'm a new guy here since around the holidays of 2008. Quite a few new people here but some of the "old timers" keep us in line.Smile,Wink, & Grin

Jeff- Apparently these people you speak of lead sheltered lives. Burning of grass is very common around here. Just got done burning off some waterways, and the State of Ill-e-noise is in the process of burning off their precious Prairie Grass they plant on the sides of the highway. Now I don't do it at my house, of course I don't have that type of grass. Besides, the neighbors may complain. HmmmmMischief

Starting to rain here now. So looks like a bit of time in Toddavania (of which I'm king) off and on today with any luck. Ya'll have a great day.

EDIT: Well I guess it's my turn. Oh look fresh pies for Sunday dinner!!

Just did more burning this morning. We lit off a pile of pine straw 5 feet tall, 8 feet wide and 20 feet long. Should burn for hours.

Seeing as Todd has TOP honors I'll have the king size platter of tacos for lunch. Bring on plenty of Pace picante sauce, the hotter the better. This redneck Indian likes it HOT!

Good afternoon gang!

Sign - Welcome back Krump! Good to see you again!

Robby - Interesting video w/ the what... 7 engines. Was that a SW1000 or 1500 towards the end of those engines?

Well all, as for trying for outdoor photos in natural light, it may not happen today... it's cold and snowing on and off here. I'll go for some inside shots later after I get back from running errands.

Ok... time to go get the errands done...

Take care!

JP, not to sure.  I will have to watch the video again.  I like when the train companys do mix in alot of different engines.  I have a video on youtube with 8 engines.....(3) BNSF,  (1)  Wheeling&Erie,  (4) CSX.  Now that was a SIGHT!!!

Question: What is the easiest (cheapest) way to weather rails? Don't some of you use a particular kind of ink pen?

I mask off the ties with cheap masking tape (<50 cents a roll) and spray the rails with red oxide primer followed by a treatment with an alcohol/black acrylic spray.

Sue, very nice.  Have you thought of painting the bottom black?  I am guessing that its wood, and it might look real nice black.  I guess its to late to stain it.

Hi guys!

I tried to post earlier but it wouldn't let me. I was expecting an OOPS! again, but didnt get one, just didn't get the post window to open right.

WE actually have flurries here. Ugh. Of course I always say that until the last day of March passes Ma Nature usually sends us at least one more major storm.

Not much to say, back is feeling better, and the muscle relaxer doesn't hit me as hard now. I am still not responsible for anything I say, do, think or post whilest under the influence. LOL.

Robby P. I hope all those locos weren't running that would be a waste of fuel. You are lucky to have so many brands passing by near you. We only have a few NS and a stray CP or two go through  here.

Well, the prayer candle is up for those who need thoughts and prayers.

Good afternoon diners!

It was sunny and 70 F today, and I was outside this afternoon.

Krump...... What a pleasant surprise. Glad to see you back in the diner.

Sawyer ... I used to hate memorizing stuff, but I always did my best. Too bad my best was not very good.

Ray ... I enjoy your photos of the depot scene.

Rob.... I paint the track alternating flat black with flat red oxide. If both layers are wet, they blend together and look rusty. I don't cover ties with masking tape. After track is installed, I ballast by blending two or more colors. I clean off ballast sticking to wrong surfaces. That usually chips some paint off the rails, and then I need to touch up paint on rails with a brush. After thant, Then I brush earth colors using a very thin mix of acrylic paint and a broad brush over all surfaces.

Jerry .... That's a neat downtown scene with gas station and all.
