I would recommend NCE. About a year ago I replaced a complete Digitrax system with a NCE Power Pro. It is amazing how much better the NCE system is. I found the NCE sytem so much easier to use. And a lot more reliable.

If you're really put off by technology, but like NCE, you could look into their DCC Twin. Not a lot of buttons, easy to get started with. Start out simple and add it to over time.

What are people using in your area?  While these forums are a great resource, using a system that the local hobby store, local clubs, and friends use will give you many chances for face to face talks with people using the same system and facing the same problems.

You'll never get a single answer because there are loyal fans of both.  For starter systems the Digitrax Zephyr is a good value, more features than the NCE twin.  I added an NCE Pro Cab to the NCE Twin and find it a great combination.  I prefer the simpler programming the Pro Cab/Twin combo provides.  With either you have room for your system to grow.  Even in my club with 100 members you have proponents of both.

All good suggestions but model railway shops in London are thin on the ground (three shops I can think of - the closest an hour away across town). Likewise clubs. So I'm a bit of a lone wolf on this one - plus I may well be moving to Southern Spain in a year or so - where, despite there being lots of retirees from all over Europe, there doesn't seem to be much of a local railway modelling tradition.
