Signaling with JMRI
Posted by JACOB OLIVER on Sunday, July 5, 2015 10:44 AM

I have a SE8C. The powersupply is 12 volts DC and it' connected to JMRI throuh a Loco-Buffer USB. My prblem is twofold. One, I can' get JMRI to read the board, and two, I tried changing the address to 3 and now all the lights on the test mast are flashing constantly.

LION knows nothing about a JMRI except that it is probably not edible.

Signals? LIONS *know* about signals. Him likes to operate interlocking signals from the tower with real levers. Put your big furry paw around those babys and you know that you are operating a railroad.

If all else fails, read instruction book. If did that you did, try reading it backwards, sometimes it makes more snese that way.

Now where is my Wildebeest!?

I have a SE8C. The powersupply is 12 volts DC and it' connected to JMRI throuh a Loco-Buffer USB. My prblem is twofold. One, I can' get JMRI to read the board, and two, I tried changing the address to 3 and now all the lights on the test mast are flashing constantly.

I have a couple questions for you. Do you have setup as a standalone device or is it hooked into Loconet (with some sort of command station attached). If you have the locobuffer USB hooked up directly to the SE8c you will not be able to read or write anything to the board.  A command station is necessary in order to translate what is coming off the Locobuffer into the se8c. The command station is what sends the loconet commands to the SE8c. The Locobuffer simply puts out a packet to loconet and the command station receives it and directs it to the Se8c. Without the Loconet signals generated by the command station you won't be able to program it (unless you have setup a standalone loconet).

Secondly did you push any of the buttons on the board when programming the SE8c in JMRI (using the Se8c config utility). You should not have to push any of the buttons to program the board.

When changing the board ID were you in the SE8c configuration utility or using the switch command function?

I would suggest using your throttle or PC to set the board ID (by using the switch command function) and then using JMRI (se8c utility) to finish the configuration.

Page 8 of the manual (found here) will help you set the board ID. This can be done by holding the ID button until the green light starts blinking. Then issue a switch command for address 03 (either closed or thrown) and it will set the board ID. Please note that the switch addresses used to control the signals will change if you set the board ID to 03. The chart on Page 8 of the manual gives you the updated switch addresses ranges that control the turnouts and signals.

If you need to, you can restore the board to Factory settings by pressing and holding the Option Button until the red LED starts blinking. Go to switch address 20 and give it a closed AND a thrown command. Press and hold the Option button again untl the red light stop blinking. you can release the option button and the Green LED will stay lit. This procedure can be found at the top of page 5 in the manual.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had a stand alone loconet, but I didn't have a jumper to create the railsync. Anyways, got it all fixed now. if you're interested, here's a link on the problem and how I fixed it.
