i'm familiar with projects for large layouts: block detection, automated stopping blocks, accurate signaling, C/MRI and computer control
looking for ideas for electronics projects for small layout that doesn't require remote sensing or control for train operation.

Then exactly what kind of small projects are you interested in?

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.
(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.

that's a great list !
If you are using twin-coil switch machines, build a Capacitive Discharge circuit. This will not only give you more solid, reliable throws, but it will also protect your switch machines in case a toggle switch fails and leaves constant power applied to the machine. Having had toggles fail like this both with and without a CD circuit, believe me, it's much better with.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Operating Rail-road crossing flashers, that are controlled by hidden detectors. Lamp-posts made from styrene/brass tubing and LED. Small shop scene where welding is occuring. Look into posiblities with arduinos. google: arduino
