Welcome to the Model Railroad world where beer goes with trains and the big sceen is next to the layout. Also wives and girlfriends voices are blocked out when anything railroad like gets your attention.

The best way to go about this is to look at the comparisons a few vendors have assembled. Here you may discover some features you did not think was an issue.

One thing not covered is the human interface. Ask questions about how easy it is for YOU to do a given task.

First off, I have three words: research, research, and research.

Second, if a particular brand doesn't list a certain feature, you can pretty much guarantee that it won't have it.

Third, you might want a system that allows you to read back the CVs which are settings on a decoder equipped in a locomotive.

I have an NCE Power Cab and love it.  It allows me to do just about everything.

Good luck and remember that Google is your best friend.

Zippy Sign - Welcome

Boy that is a tough question. It depends on what you want to do with the system.

1 Do you want to run all sound engines?

2 Do you want to change CV's?

3 Do you want run DC engines?

4 How many main lines will you run the 4 trains on? Or will one train have a 4 engine consist

5 What is the prices range you can spend?

6 How big will the layout be?

 7 What scale?

8 Do you want walk around control?

I like simple and if cost is a big factor and you just want to get started then the Bachmann E-Z Command is great way to start. I ran 3 sound engines with it stock power supply. Easy to use but could not change CV's. That was fine with me at the time, I wanted simple.

Used a friends Zepher on my layout. It was OK. Could read and write CV's, but controlling 6 engines on 3 main lines was no easier than the E-Z.

I went with the Digitrax Super Empire Builder and have not looked back. Main thing is it can be used as a walk around throttle and with 3 main lines easy to run more than one train on the same line.

I am new to the train world and am building a new lay out. I hope to run about 4 engines or more when finished. What would be the best system for now and for the future if i plan to expand? I have read so much i feel like i am buying a car from a dealer. Thank You.
