We have just the information you're asking for in a book called "Guide to North American Steam Locomotives," compiled by George Drury. It's available in hobby stores and on the shopping section of this Web site. It includes rosters and histories on the steam locoxmotives of all major railroads, and a lot of other useful information too.

For the B&O you might want to track down A. Stauffer's big book on B&O Power. Warning: it goes for collector prices these days and it is black and white.
