Union Pacific SD70ACe's Heritage units in Omaha for unveiling

UP 8379 and 8383 are in Omaha for unveiling with the 844 this weekend. The two units are painted in heritage colors and it is belived they are WP and MP, but they were delievered with blue tarps on them.

What does the UP "Heritage" paint look like? Does it have the flag on the side? If it does, I recall that being the "Building America" paint scheme.

We don't know what they look like, because they are covered up. No information has been given out about these units. Take a look here:

People are also saying that these might be military units...only time will tell. We will find out on Saturday.

Hmm...A return to silver trucks and fuel tank..should be interesting to see what is under those blue tarps. Regardless of how you paint a modern diesel it will still resemble a microwave in a fancy box, just the same, its good to see UP garner some positive exposure.

It's been confirmed by UP that the two SD70ACe's are painted in MoPAC and WP. Should be cool to see them unvieled.

One of the articles stated, these are the first of four of the heritage series. Two more units are being tracked that were delivered in primer.

Any speculation???? The first two are subnumbered 1982 and 1983 for the year the WP and the MP were merged.

The SP was in 1996 and the C&NW was in 1988???

The new units will probably end up wearing the merge year numbers much like the 2001 and 2002 blue SD70M Olympic units.

Let's hope Tower 55 will build them.

From what I've heard, UP ordered paint for an MKT (Katy) unit next. SP, SSW and CN&W will follow.

What about the Rio Grande? Anyone think they will do a loco in that scheme? I think it would be nice and am sure others would like it as well.

Just got some additional news, there are a total of five heritage units pending. MKT-yellow/green, MP-blue, C&NW yellow-green lighting stripe, WP Green-orange, SP scarlet-red. D&RGW was not selected for recreation. Ok what are the ones at Omaha?

My source states these units are not historically correct, some liberties were taken with the paint jobs, but overall they convey the history of their chosen roads. The units wil be numbered to reflect the year of merger.

Since the UP is painting the locomotives, they are by definition "correct". They may not use the historical painting diagram.

But then again finding two BNSF engines in the same consist with the same paint scheme is pretty hard. The person in charge of BNSF schemes must have been raised by the person that was in charge of paint for the LV. They had a scheme for every 3 or 4 locomotives too.

Really? There's this little thing among BNSF fans called 'Dash 9 boredom' and it just makes you sick of GE's in Heritage 2 colors. Visit BNSF's transcon to see what I mean.

From what I heard, Rio Grande wasn't selected because it was merged with SP, not UP. I think the same goes for SSW too (never mind my previous post about that). The MKT unit will be yellow and green.

Thanks for the correct date as I could not remember the date and thought it was in the late eighties, with a question mark?? I should have thought about the fact I have a book with the C&NW AC4400's in it that came out in 1994?? Boy, does time fly!

I sure liked the looks of that paint scheme on the AC4400's and the Dash 9's.

The C&NW Dash nines were so attractive when new that I purchased one of the Kato units just for that reason. It is never used since I don't model the era, but it was great looking. The Dash 9 Kato model had the original side frame type truck on them which was good for the first forty units, but the later units got the new side frame.
It will be interesting to see if they actually have the stripes and the colors to replicate the most striking units painted for any road.

Trainorders thread just posted some pictures with the tarps off, however, before you get excited, they only show the top of the units behind the passenger cars being used for shields to hid the units until later tomorrow morning.

Omaha, Neb., July 30, 2005 – Union Pacific Chairman and CEO *** Davidson today unveiled an unprecedented new Heritage series of locomotives that will honor the people and the railroads that have made the company what it is today. Each locomotive will feature a unique paint scheme, incorporating elements of one of the six major railroads that have merged with Union Pacific.

"It is important that we take an historical perspective of who we are and how we got here," Davidson said. "Our reputation as America’s greatest railroad has been strengthened by the many lines that have become a part of the UP. It is time we pay homage to those railroads and the generations of men and women who helped to build a great nation and the foundation for our future."

The first two locomotives in the series were revealed Saturday in Omaha. The locomotives, which pay tribute to the men and women of Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific, will operate across the UP system.

The Missouri Pacific and Western Pacific locomotives will be followed in coming months by locomotives painted in the style of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (Katy), Chicago & North Western, Southern Pacific, and Denver & Rio Grande.

The C&NW, SP, Katy and theD&RG will get heritage units in the future months.
