This one is parked in Woodsville NH, less trucks, and looking a little shabby. I have no idea what railroad might have owned it.

This thread doesn't have enough B&W pics...

It's not much to look at here, but it was glorious in real life. It's one of the International Car Company 81501-81509 series cabooses, maybe 81503? crossing Rockport Road southwest of Bloomington, Indiana in 1971 while working the Monon's maple Hill Branch in quarry-to-mill service.

No pictures- but saw a DM&IR RR caboose (number unknown) on a drop deck semi trailer heading south from Superior WI about 3 weeks ago. Caboose trucks were on the trailer of the semi following the one carrying the caboose body. Figured some one has a project in the works. Any one have any info about it?

Confused Besides the up in the air picture in Jackson, Tn which is located at the Casey Jones Museum on I-40. Great place to visit and eat. Casey's home is also there, they moved it from down town.

There is also another museum at Jackson, the NC SC&L Museum which on South Royal at the old NC SC&L train depot which is open, packed with memorabelia and pictures, along with a nice HO layout.

When I said Road pictures of Cabooses,  I meant when you're traveling down the road on a road trip and you turn around on your way past a caboose and your wife says what the hell are you doing.

You turn around on the highway and go back to take a picture of a caboose.

Wayne you're a Brit.  The guy I do a lot of subcontracting for is a Brit.  If I talk to him too early in the morning his accent is so heavy I can barely understand what he's saying.

His parents live somewhere fancy in England not too far from David Gilmour and know him as an acquaintance.

I guess Dave is a pretty laid-back guy and was talking to Darren's parents telling them how his pool guys would come over and he would pay them for a full day just to sit around and socialize before they finally got to doing his job.

Apparently the pool guys were there and ready to go to work.  Dave enjoyed their company and just needed some good people to talk to for a while.

Don't fergit, in Can-uh-da, we also god da Québecoise (Kay-beck-quaw) and doze guys don't god no Hanglish hack-sent, eh?

Trute-be told, I t'ink dat hall-most any ax-ent give a voice some care-ack-ter.

Regional accents and dialects, at least for folks speaking some form of English which we can understand, abound in the U.S. and Canada.  The American friends that I visit definitely have discernible accents and I'm sure that my Canadian English has an accent noticeable to them, too.

Despite the apparently common useage here in Canada, I haven't ever called a caboose a "van".  We have moving vans (parked ones, too) and mini vans, camper vans, and vans called shaggin' wagons, too, but everything shown in this thread looks like a caboose to me.

A Runaway Caboose is never a good thing Wayne.

You better go across country on your horse and try to retrieve that.

Judy and I just watched that episode of Little House on the Prairie the other night.

Charles Ingalls did ride across country on his horse really fast and did retrieve that Runaway Caboose his kids were inYes

Back in the early '90s, while driving around Colorado, I spotted a residence that was two cabooses back to back.  One was a D&RGW (yellow) and the other ATSF (red).  They were set up nicely and frankly they were beautiful!

To the best of my recall this was outside Durango, again about 1991 or so.  I did take a pic (film camera) but can't locate it to show here.

Has anyone else seen that ?

To the best of my recall this was outside Durango, again about 1991 or so.  I did take a pic (film camera) but can't locate it to show here.

Has anyone else seen that ?

Wow that is really cool. Was it like this? Now I want to buy this one too.

Yes, a yellow D&RG and red ATSF back to back...... I also recall they had plexiglas (I assume it wasn't regular glass) that enclosed the adjoining "porches" to keep the weather out.

That's interesting Kevin.  I'm not a very fancy lad,  I could live like that if I had to.  As long as it was in a State that didn't have winter.  I would imagine one would need an outhouse.  Did you notice if there was one?

A caboose like that would sure make a really cool cabin or hunting shack.

They might have sold it and the new owner will have it shipped out by flat car.

The shopping center is named Quarterfield Station.  Trucks are stamped C&O 1929.

The shopping center may have been a stop on the Baltimore and Annapolis RR, when my mother and room mate took the train to dances at the US Naval Academy.  Room mate married Ross Perot and I am not a billionaire.CryingBig Smile

Interesting Caboose Graphics Kevin.

I could be mistaking but isn't that the ant that the blue Aardvark would try to suck out of the anthill and his snout sounded like a vacuum cleaner.  It was a cartoon during the Pink Panther ones I enjoyed when I was a kid.  I probably still wouldLaugh

I found one more.

Very nice pictures, everyone.

I just want to take a moment to remind participants to be sure that they only post their own pictures. Nothing from outside sources like rrpictures.net. It seems like everyone here is good so far, but I have to give everyone the standard disclaimer. It's a copyright thing.

Carry on, as you were!

Prices for cabeese have appreciated.  The cheapest on on https://ozarkmountainrailcar.com/Is $5,000 and you can spend up to $55,000  The top of the line is still pretty spartan and often converted to be a business or vistior center.   It will not put you in the Private Varnish club.

I've seen many of these images, or at least the cabooses (cabeese?) just last week while searching for an appropriate Frisco caboose I want to model. I was surprised that I hadn't known that most caboose had brake wheels on both ends! Several of the images here would have shown that fact to me. Wish I had come here first! Thanks for the great images!

Hello.

Surprised to see the Road Caboose thread still kickin.

Kevin I like the side door cabooses as well and the nifty one you posted.  I'm glad I'm modeling the transitional era with so many choices of Cabeese.

I grew up in the Burlington Northern era when they still had them.  I am one of those goofy people that enjoy being stopped on the road to watch the train go by.  I must say I'm always disappointed when the end of the train comes and it's just the GPS blinking light and no cabooseCrying

Ed,   that little stubby Caboose was unique and rather small.  I never seen one of those.  I'm sure the thing was huge to that little boy when his mother put him on it.  Probably the highlight of his day.

x-airbusdriver,  I'm glad you enjoyed the Cabeese here as well as I do.  You're a retired airline pilot eh?  That's cool.

As often as I have flown, I always wondered what it would be like to be in control of flight.  Perhaps next time around.  Maybe I'll get lucky and be reincarnated into an eagle in my next lifeSmile, Wink & GrinLaugh

I'm all out of caboose pictures.  Another road trip is definitely due!

I always turn around and go back for a picture when I see a caboose on a road trip.  My wife has said "What the hell are you doing" or "Not again".  My reply is we're on a road trip, do you have any appointments, we have no schedule now so no hurry hereLaugh

It was probably a good idea you got out of there quick Kevin.  Those homeless people may have thought you were affiliated with some kind of government agency taking a picture of the situation.  Maybe that's why they came out so fast,  they probably didn't care for you too muchIndifferent

Ed: I tried to build a model of that boxcar/caboose many years ago, but I could not get it to work.

The trucks just do not have room to swivel behind the steps. I even tried using plastic trucks and shaving off the journal boxes, still would not track properly.

If I knew how to make it work mechanically, it would be a great looking caboose to build a model of.

Tom Stage made one a while back and in recent threads he has been seeking info for a future "upgrade" model. I admire his desire for accuracy.

I cheated and bought a brass model of a B&O War emergency caboose:

Your B&O caboose looks a lot more "Do-able" with the steps coming straight down the side rather than the traditional caboose steps on the prototype picture you posted.

I will have to give this project another go with that modification.

Kevin you could model that Caboose with all your talent.  You just gave up too soon as I did with many of my models on the back burner.  Some sort of bump out before the steps go down.  I bet you give it another whirlYes

I only have one bump out caboose I acquired in a trade with my brother.  It's a more modern version of Ed's B&O.  My brother got a Mesabi arrowhead 3 Bay Hopper in the trade.  It was one of my favorites.

Love this caboose. I need to replace the Rapido trucks with MT of course.

What was the Louisville and Nashville Caboose used for at the Kentucky Railway Museum?

Did the old Canadian National end up down south with that undecorated caboose or was it up closer to Michigan?

I do not know. All the windows were covered with white paper. My best guess would be a snackbar based on the tables that were nearby.

That is a nice Fixer-Upper Ed.  I could use a caboose like you got for a cabin in northern Minnesota.  Grab your tools and I'll grab mine and I will meet you in Cleveland with my Lumber Truck on Friday.  I'll just have to figure out how to get it back to Minnesota when we Get-R-Done.  Oh Well, ... This has all been surprising railroad news to me.  I'll be keeping that picture with the other ones and texting them to my brother tonight.  He will appreciate it more than you know.

My brother is a DWP nut.  I even bought him a DWP shirt, he wears it all the time.  For Christmas I gave him a DWP RS11 number 3606.  He said thank you too much, that's how much he liked it.

Very nice indeed Kevin.  I love well done restorations.  I'm the kind of guy who can really appreciate them.

That's why I always stop by and visit this Caboose I started the thread with.

It was restored properly.  It isn't a bunch of paint over paint or any rushed slapped together hodgepodge.  She was restored well by Craftsmen, not a bunch of hacks.

There are a few locmotives around, but I know of no cabooses.

Strange. When I cross the border to Georgia they are everywhere.

I was there in '72 and found this one in Homestead (Florida City):

I believe it was moved to the Gold Coast Museum.

I will need to keep my eyes open when I am travelling in Florida. I usually do not pay attention like I do in other areas... I have seen all of Florida before.

This caboose was seen in West Virginia.

That's a really unique looking caboose Ed.  It definitely looks restored and is old because there hasn't been any cabeese for years.  It does look rather retro and was ahead-of-its-time at that time is my guess.

I wouldn't mind having one of those for a conversation piece on my layoutYes

Cool!

I'll take the Green Penn Central or the Blue Conrail, I haven't decided yet.  Just too bad they don't have a Great Northern or a Northern Pacific.

Thanks Ed

Thanks Ed for bringing up this one-year-old thread.

I'm all out of Road pictures of cabooses because I haven't been on a road trip for quite a while in light of our new weird world.

I guess a recap is in order

Liked the faded red Western Railroad Kevin.  And the faded blue B&O Ed.  Some good old patina going on those cabeese!

I found this one in an unnamed folder. I have no idea where I was when I took this picture.

I like em! Stick out tongue

Ed,  Kevin,  You can never get too much of Red Cabeese!  And if you did post those before,  I probably wouldn't remember anywayLaugh

There's a reason they have that saying,  "Do a Double Take"  It applies when a good-looking woman walks by or a good looking Caboose is nearLaugh

Per your suggestions,  I will start over Road Pictures of Cabooses in 2021.

Thanks for posting

The fellow in the conductors uniform, rest his soul, is Joe Sullenberger. I miss that ol' fellow. He used to work on the Northern Alberta Ry. The young lady was a companion for a while Whistling

I see you were a handsome devil in your youth as well Ed.  I must say that little sweetheart companion of yours was better-looking thoughWink

And what's the deal I've noticed that all conductors always look like conductors.

Mark Hall Patton standing in front of a historical caboose.  I've always admired Mark.  He always knows!  That man's life is all about history and everything that goes with it.

He's a favorite of mine.  The Administer of the Clark County Museum and a member of the Henderson Historical Society.

Mark knows his history.  I catch clips and documentaries.  I'm grateful for people like this and always interested in what he has to say because he knows what he's talking about
