Extension Pin On Peco Switch Motors
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, February 2, 2005 10:28 AM
Hello Everyone.
I just started putting in my Peco switch motors and found that a few of them came without extension pins. I'm installing them under the bench work and with out these the pin that is mounted on the motor is not long enough to come thru and connect to the turnout. Any ideas on what I can do to extend this pin so I can clear the bench work. I'm working in N Gauge with 1/2" ply as my base.
Is there somewhere I can purchase these seperate?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I had the same problem for my HO layout. I took one of the switch machines to my LHS and found some brass tubing that would fit around the pin, and a solid brass rod that was the same thickness as the pin. Then I just cut it the size that I needed it, and soldered them to the original pin on the switch motor. My LHS recommended this as they did not carry or could not get the pin extenders. I don't remember the size of the brass rod or the brass tubing, but it was very easy to match up.
Thanks, Kevin

Does anyone know who stocks the Peco PL-9 mounting plates for mounting the point motors under the layout? None of the LHS stock them and I can't find them on the Walthers web site. I sent an e-mail to Peco in England but haven't received a reply yet.

www.ehattons.com have the PL-9 mounting plates though I'd be careful to check the current exchange rates before ordering - they might well work out pretty expensive! The mail order service from that site is good, I've ordered a fair bit of equipment from them over the past few years and never had a problem. Peco seem a little hesitant to join the computer age from what I hear - their "Railway Modeller" magazine apparently asked people to write to them "snail mail" rather than using email recently...

Thanks, Matt. I checked their site and they have the PL-9 and also point motors with long pins. If I can't find a site closer to home, I'll order from them. I think you're right about Peco not joining the computer age. I sent them an e-mail using the link on their web site and it bounced back as refused by the server. Oh well, I got the results I needed from this forum. [tup]
