I am building the CB&Q Red Oak, small (door size) N layout which was featured in MR last year. The back drop used in the layout is 1/16" white styrene (14"X 81 1/2"). I live in a small community in Iowa and don't have the stryene available without ordering it. The shipping is unreasonably expensive. Can anyone suggest how to find this or something else to use for the backdrop? Thank You
1/8" hardboard (Masonite) will also do the trick!
Thin masonite (hardboard) works fine

Is there by chance a sign shop in your general area?
They use styrene sheets AND as a rule have a predictable number of mis-prints/mistakes that they discard and might be willing to give, or sell cheaply, to you. A friend who is a truck driver lucked onto a large supply of large styrene sheets that way.

Try aluminum flashing material, which is available from home supply stores in rolls 10" to 20" wide and up to 10 feet long.
