Heljan 804 Turntable Kit - need instructions!
Posted by LDstevo on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 8:36 PM

Hi

I have managed to misplace the instruction manual for my Heljan 804 Turntable Kit - does anyone out there have a copy? I would love a PDF or fax and would be willing to send an SASE and pay for copies. Thanks for your consideration.

I have the kit and the instructions. If you will send me your e-mail address (start a 'conversation' with me), I will scan the instructions and send them to you.

Regards,

 John

Anytime, Steve.   Interestingly, there does not seem to be any Heljan instruction pages on the wonderful HO Seeker website that otherwise compiles all sorts of useful catalog pages and kit instructions from the past.  That is a gap.

And your posting got me to thinking -- just why DO I have the Heljan kit?  I have no need for a turntable on my layout.  Of course I also do not need an SP cab forward and yet .....

Dave

"HO Seeker" was the first place I looked - it is a very handy sight. As far as the extra kits and equipment we all seem to accumulate - its nice to have just in case!

If any of you are interested in making yourself a copy of the motorizing kit for that turntable that is no longer available, send me a PM and I will send you a copy of the instructions and plan for the motor mounting bracket that I sketched up for another forum member.

John,

Saw your earlier post re above turn table. I'm looking for a table for an evolving CVR Italy Yard HO lay out. Since you have the kit, can I ask you for an evaluation of this kit? I assume it is a plastic kit but wonder how it looks when finished? he poorly scanned image on Walthers and elsewhere don't really show much.

Thanks and hope you can provide the info.

I still have the kit but I have not (and will not) built it. I bought it some 10-12 years ago along with the motorizing kit. Subsequently, I met a gentleman who had a Bowser turntable kit that he wasn't going to use and I bought it from him. It is a much larger table and much sturdier. I am going to use the motorizing kit from the Heljan kit to power the Bowser table. Sooooo, unfortunately I really don't have much information for you other than to say to search the MR forums - there have been a considerable number of threads dedicated to the problem of making the Heljan/Walthers turntable kits into reliable, working units. Sorry I can't be more help. If there is any other way I can help, please let me know

Regards,

 John

Thanks, John. Yes, I believe I've seen previous posts regarding one or both of these kits. When I started building HO kits in the mid-1950s, engines and cars were made of metal and structures were made of basswood. They were a lot of work, but they looked fantastic. Unfortunately, I lost all of those models during various moves since. Plastic is now the standard. I may just scratch build a table. Appreciate you swift response. - Chuck

Don't discount the practicality of a more purely mechanical means for a Heljan turntable

I have seen guys who created a sort of lower dish connected to the table's pivot, with the very edge of that dish sticking through a slot in the fascia.  So that you could manuall turn the table without having to touch it with your hands.  (I have also seen cranks used for turntables).
