What is the nature and purpose for this facility? What have you for space? What are you running in the way of model cars and locomotives? A yard is not a yard is not a yard. They have specified utility and local terrain limitations in the real world, and that is why they look as they do. So, what are we looking at in your situation?
Crandell
(14 7/8 inch wide by 3 feet 10 3/8 inch long ) thats the area i have desanated but i can extend it for another 3 or 4 inchs. i have 2 sd45,2 gp-9, and 2 sw7 and one rs2, plus i have 6 sd engines, 2 steam engines, and 50 to 60 box , coal , and grain cars i swich them out and put some in a display case that i have hanging .( it can take about 42 cars includeing engines)
i found out that i need
4 left swiches and 4 right or 4 left and 3 right or 4 left and 2 right. i already have 2 swiches placed , but not nailed or glued down yet for a side track and i was working on my n scale layout tonight and i had the idea to put in a train yard. i am going to have them seperley electricfied so i can run mulipule tracks in the yard. it is a small layout with a background in the middle. it is a traveling layout so i can take it to model train shows.
any more ideas?
Rob,
I think the lack of responses is due to the fact that your question is unclear.
What are you trying to do with these turnouts? A diagram would help.
Are you debating between a double ended yard and a stub end yard ?
We need more information and a clearer picture of what you are mulling in your mind.

You are off to a great start, and that video was very helpful.
Here is what I would suggest regarding the train yard. It looks like you have the room, so I would go with the double ended yard. As you suggested, you could go with 4 left and 4 right turnouts and build a double ended yard ladder. That way, you can get at the cars in the yard from either side and enter and exit at will without having to come and go from one direction. So, on one side, you would lead with a left turnout followed by three right turnouts to form one side of the ladder. On the other side, you would lead with a right turnout followed by three left turnouts to form the other side of the ladder.
As far as the train station goes, I would keep that separate from the yard if you can and place the station somewhere else on the layout. If you don't want it on the main line, then you could add another left and right turnout to lead into and out of the station.
One other thing. If you have a tripod, mount that video camera on it to keep it steady. I passed out watching that video when the cat tried to take over. Just kidding. Give that cat a project, maybe building the mountain. It has too much time on its paws.
thanks, now i know what i am going to do.
Build a double ended yard?
yup and work on other aspects of the layout.
