decal paper
Posted by tugboat95 on Thursday, February 4, 2010 9:58 PM

Where can I find decal paper for the custom design I have come up with for my engines?  I have looked at staples and at their online site with no luck.  Thats pretty much it for the stores where I live.  Looking for both a store to go in or an online site to order from.

I don't see it on the web site but I think you can buy decal paper from Champ Decals.  Try calling them:  701-852-4938 (Tues,Wed.Thurs., 10:00am to 3:00pm).

You might also try Rail Graphics, a custom decal company.  And many hobby shops carry decal paper.

Good luck.

I use Testor's decal paper that I get from Hobby Lobby. They also carry the sealer/bonder that's needed.

You can get it from Microscale.  They call it Trim Film.  Blank sheets 8 X 11 inches come either clear or white and are item numbers TF02-0 and TF02-1.  See http://microscale.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc

Testors has a full line, starting with a kit that includes everyting you need to get started. The designs on the included CD are more aimed toward the model auto hobby though. You can also get the papaer in clear or white, plus the bonder spray.

It appears that you can order directly from their site. I notice they've added a decal setting solution.

Also, check with Micro-Mark (www.micromark.com)  They have three types, different film/paper background colors and for different formats of printer/copier in packs of 5, 25, or 100 for modest per sheet costs.  and the sheets are 8 1/2" X 11".

Quick question? You using a inkjet or laser printer?  I got mine from Jonrocket.com. The sell both laser and inkjet paper. Also do you want clear background or white background?  Check out their website much better deal than any of the decal manufactures.  Hope this helps.

Yes, make sure you get the right paper to go with your printer.  They are not interchangeable.

Walthers also sells decal paper, but I think theirs is only for laser printers.

Also, you will need a sealer.  I personally use Liquid Decal Film from Microscale.  Others prefer Krylon spray.  This must be applied before you cut out the decal and put it in water, or you'll end up with a blank decal and a bunch of ink in the bottom of the bowl.  Guess how I found this out.

My most-local hobby shop doesn't carry decal paper, but another a bit further away does.  Call around - it's cheaper than driving.  (Of course, just going to a different shop can be fun in itself.)

I'm using an inkjet and both clear and white backgrounds.  I have found micro mark sells pretty much everything I need along with Microscale.  I have made the design and printed some on regular paper then glued that to an experimental shell.  I didn't like the look so I'm back to the drawing board as far as the design goes.  I haven't sat down and redone anything yet.  Kind of at a loss where to start.  Don't really know what I want.  If i can get my kid away from the Olympics long enough, maybe he cane design something.  He's pretty good with this sort of thing.  Have a good sized train show in the area in March.  I have been putting aside a little bit of money the last month or so.  I plan to buy STUFF! and maybe save on shipping.  All my stuff is shipped, no local stores.

I see you are from Wilmington.  Come up to New Bern for a train show on March 6-7.  We are only 90 minutes from the Battleship.  I have been before but this will be my first as a serious customer.  It will be worth your drive up.  I am not a member of this club but they do have an awesome layout.  I have always been impressed with the amount of stuff there and just how far away exhibitors come to display.

Can white lettering be created with white decal paper by using the black background option in Word with the white ink option?

Sorry for the convoluted question. I'm new to this create your own decal business.

You can if you are doing a re-number, like if you are doing a re-number on a railbox car. Black back ground and white lettering and numbers.

I have just finished using the Testors decal paper, and am very satisfied with the results.  I purchased a 6-pack of the CLEAR decal paper, along with a can of the bonder spray (I think you can skip the "set" they sell), for use on my HP F4480 inkjet printer at my local Hobby Lobby.  This is the process that I used to achieve some nice looking signs for my layout:

First, I printed out a sheet of signs (graciously posted by tomkat-13 on this forum) on a single sheet of the decal paper.  I allowed the ink to dry completely for 24 hours, then I gave it a LIGHT spray with the bonder. After 12 hours or so, I then applied a bit heavier spray.  Once that had completely dried, I cut out the sign I wanted, dropped it in a bit of water for 30 seconds, and working carefully, applied it to the side of one of my structures.  Simple as that!  The only thing that I would probably have done differently, would be to pick up some of the WHITE decal paper as well.  I think the decals would show up a bit better on some of my darker structures.  Hope this helps!

You might also look into the Evan Designs decal paper for inkjet printers.  This white background paper does not need a sealer and the white background can be made clear by applying an overspray of Testors DulCote.  I have used this paper for several projects and am quite pleased with the results.  I have often used colored backgrounds to add white lettering to models.  It can take a few tries to get the background color to match the model's paint, but the resulting white letters are bright and sharp!   If you want to keep the background white, be sure to use a water based clear overspray and NOT DulCote.  One oddity is that Evan Designs recommends using lighter fluid as a setting solution instead of Solvaset.

You might not believe that this decal paper does not require a sealer.  However, I have produced dozens of decals with this paper and have managed to smear only one decal.  Admittedly, this smearing occurred only because I kept trying to realign the decal after far too many applications of Solvaset.  Yeah, I know.  I didn't use lighter fluid.
