Nothing really, I can see where you are going, wanting to have room to move cars to your industries. The curved tail tracks give you that and admittedly, with my idea, you may loose them (without extending them). If this is a 'for now' plan and your space is restricted to that shown, you could 86 that passing siding all together and just run around the station to move cars. Or, leave it at one end and just extend One end to one of the curves on the side which would give you more eventual room in front of the station for trains.

You did state your intent was to build and model, rather than operate I just thought it would look better with two long parallel tracks at the station rather than a passing bubble. To actually use that as a passing track, you've got room for maybe one or two cars and a short loco. It'd take you forever to get one train past another with it.

I think you're on the right track in your planning methods, here's a similar situation of mine..

For operation sake as well as appearance, I would expand that passing siding into the curves so that you can actually fit a passenger train on each of the tracks. Right now, to me, it looks as if the siding in front of the station is an afterthought 'oh, crap!' Banged Head [banghead] rather than a planned part of an operating terminal. You might also find that it gives you a little more ease of fitting all the station outbuildings in there as well. Looking at your overhead, it appears there were two tracks along the river(?) running the length of the terminal.

Hey folks, I'm working on a plan to model a small portion of my hometown in the 1950's.  Knowing that I enjoy building kits and doing scenery, I'm not overly concerned about prototypical operations.  The most important things I want to model are:

1.  The depot on the left hand side of overhead picture.
2. Front Street, the main road going through town at the time.
3. A somewhat reasonable track plan if I want to operate in the future.
4.  Hubbard Milling north of depot.
This first 2x8 foot section will be the first to be built.  I plan to build the left hand section second. Then I still have to come up with a plan for the rest of the room.  Some where in the 'rest' will need to have a trestle I'd like to build.

Does my first attempt seem totally unrealistic?  Please be gentleSmile [:)]

Mill just north of Depot

Start of track plan.  Depot in the middle of tracks.  Mill in upper left hand corner.
