Benchwork the easy way! (pics)
Posted by jwils1 on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 7:41 PM

I've started my N scale layout and wanted to find the easiest way to build the benchwork.  At my age my body doesn't respond as well as it used to in hauling lumber, sawing, drilling, screwing and bolting.  So, I decided to try Woodland Scenics Module Stands.  I'm not going to use their Mod-U-Rail kits but just the wooden stands that are available to support them.

I'm sure this is more exensive that what many of you can do from scratch but it sure was nice for me.  These come in 18" x 36" straight sections and 36" x 36" corner units.  They are 36" high with adjustable legs for leveling.  With 2" of foam on top my height will be around 38".  I would like something a little higher but had to compromise for the convenience.

These units come pre-cut and pre-drilled to exact sizes and include all hardware, including bolts for connecting units together.  They are easy to assemble and I was able to do most of the work sitting in chair with the pieces on the floor in front of me.  My layout will start with a modest size 15' long, with 3 straight sections and 1 corner at each end.  I will modify the corner units a bit to get a large radius turn-around at each end as I want to run modern era equipment.  I have room for exansion but may never need to.

The total cost was about $191, including $57 UPS freight to Colorado.

Here are a couple of photos (before the corner modifications).

Looks like good quality stuff Jerry, no knots, good lumber. Your time alone is worth something, you probably didn't spend that much more when factoring in time and materials, plus I'm sure there are some people who don't have the tools available and may have to purchase them. This would be a great alternative.

They look good. Nice and convenient. I personally would have sprung for some longer 2x2 legs.
38" is pretty low when your 6'2".
