Not necessary. I use cassettes that have two pattern maker's dowels at one end. The dowels align and support the end of the cassette that mates with the layout, while the free end is supported by a simple tripod stand made of scrap aluminium section.

thanks all for the info on water cars , i'll have a look at the IHC version
