Micro mark now has a system to do etchings. Not sure I want to use it.
But had a idea of using clear transparncy (sp) film.
Though the etchings are brass and would be nice but I have along way to go to get there!

Remembr to paint or stain first, THEN seal. I used Thompson's on a cedar swing set and then tried varnishing it later. The varnish peeled of in less than a year. I tried solvents, power washing, etc but could never get the sealer out of the wood and therefore could never get a decent topcoat on the wood.
