My question is for some of the Ebay sellers on this board. Would this seller have to pay Ebay a set price for his buy it now price regardless of weather he sells it or not. It would seem that way according to some of the posters.

Yes. Setting a buy-it-now price on an item is an extra cost that's tacked onto the listing fee, which you pay whether the item sells or not. The same for reserve price. I believe the higher you set it, the more you pay.

But if you have something that you believe is worth between, say, $2,000 and $10,000, a seller will probably believe it's worth paying that listing fee to try to get closer to the higher figure, even if it means re-listing it a few times, and the reserve is used to keep it from selling for $1.57 or $100. A very confident seller will set the starting bid low with no reserve, and will argue that the resulting final price will be higher. But the advocates for both approaches (start at $0.01 or $0.99 with no reserve versus putting a high reserve on the item) will argue, very passionately, about which is the better approach to take.

...I don't get worked up anymore when I see an overpriced Lionel train. Two weekends ago when I saw the priceless DC-powered Lionel 8602 locomotive with a loop of track and a few O27 cars marked for $95, I didn't say anything. It's probably worth 1/3 the price. But telling them that probably would only offend the seller. Maybe they found a sucker after I left, or maybe they got stuck with it. It doesn't matter to me; I have that very locomotive and the rest of the set, in original box, in my basement. I paid $10 for it last summer. Maybe a little low.

I just jump at the good deals and don't let the rip-offs bother me. Probably the people are ignorant, but there are plenty of other people ready and willing to argue with them about the price. There's no reason for me to waste my time doing that--unless it's something I really want and have been looking for a long time, then maybe it's worth talking about, but only maybe. I'm better off looking for the next deal.

I'm always looking for a good deal. Below is a photo of my $29.00 2056 w/ 2046 tender. It's not a repaint, but the tender shell is a repro. I'm interested in trading it straight up for a pair of excellent 2343s or a high grade 726 w/2426 tender.

What do you guys think about this Ebay auction?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Lionel-Santa-Fe-Spirit-of-76-Comm-Diesel-Train-2389-NR_W0QQitemZ130113476661QQihZ003QQcategoryZ4147QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I don't recall ever reading that Lionel made a Spirit of 76 Commerative diesel decorated for Santa Fe. Heck, it doesn't have any sort of marking to indicate that it is a '76 piece.

Perhaps it's not in it's orginal box after all?

Thats an original box to a 1776 Lionel MPC Seaboard U36B. What that piece of crap is in the box I have no idea. That is pretty funny though. Thanks for sharing. They know what the hisrtory of the company is yet they can't even properly identify a common MPC piece.

It's not hard to find the history of Lionel on the internet. the worst part is it's probably plagarized from some site. As far as the engine, i am suspect to believe it is a repaint as I don't recall seeing a train made like that and it does not follow MPCs number scheme. At least they did not state that this is a rare, one of a kind holy grail of collecting like most Ebay sellers. They got one thing right and called it common, which it is.

It seems like every train item that seller lists is like that. He is listing an 8010 in an "original box" that has the model number and roadname rubbed out. I don't think the engine ever came in that style box.

I think the guy is listing the mini-history to try to appear like he is credible. So less informed people will assume the list must be accurate.

I see listings with what appear to be inaccurate or misleading claims on a daily basis.

Sorry...I checked with my relative, Tony Soprano, and that amount is too low. Can't make enough on the interest (at 65%). I suggest you dream bigger and think about a deluxe NYC set in Standard O. Wink [;)]

The pictures suck and make it impossible to tell what you are getting. Lionel 700E's came with outside third rail shoes that you swapped out the center roller with. In decent condition they are worth at least $2,500. As someone else posted, the freight cars are not worth a lot. If they are nice build ups they are worth around $40 to $50 each.

Well, since the box went for $5,100, I guess he was pretty dumb, estimating way too low.

Hi all!

Been a while...kinda busy at work and such. I agree, there are some on Ebay that are smoking crack. But there are deals to be had! I won this engine, which I think I did pretty good:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130113460880&rd=1&rd=1

Now I'm only having a "slight" problem with the seller...I asked him 2 minutes after winning if he would ship it via UPS instead of USPS as advertised. After 3 unanswered emails, Tuesday morning I called him. He agreed to UPS, and said he was busy, hadn't checked his email, and would get to it later in the day.

Another email left unanswered Wednesday..with no replies...

Another call Thursday, and his reply was "I work 17 hours, I don't have the time, but I'll get there today or Friday morning. Look, I like to ship USPS because it's right next to my shop, but if you give me some time, I'll do UPS for ya".

Here it is, Friday. Nada yet. I'm tempted to just go with USPS, but I HATE their tracking system.

yallaen: I sure feel your pain. Some people don't take the items they sell very seriously. I hope you used Pay Pal to pay this guy. Sometimes when you get a non-responsive or cranky seller on E-Bay you can file a complaint with PayPal and that "motivates" them a little more. As to USPS and UPS...in my area USPS ranks lower than McDonalds employees as far as their job performance is concerned. I regularly see my PO truck parked at his girlfriends house at lunch time for HOURS with the windows down and the mail visible inside the truck. Complaints to the Postmaster result in your mail not coming at all.

Jim: You KNOW someone who is a "box collector" is gonna berate you for criticizing that stupendous deal that guy got on those rare, original boxes. Collectors have special dispensation and are allowed to make insane deals like that. I now have my U-haul box listed for $3000 on E-Bay. It's an ORIGINAL U-Haul box and NOT a reproduction. Even better...I have the actual receipt signed by the U-Haul outlet store guy verifying I bought it yesterday.  Thumbs Up [tup]

I get berated on a regular basis, Dep. Nothing new there! You with a $3000 box and me with empty pockets. Again I curse my luck! Why wasn't I born rich instead of handsome? Why?!

I have decided that for this year's neighborhood Christmas Party that instead of inviting all the kids to run the trains, I am going to just set up a display of empty boxes for them to look at.   I will explain to them that this box is worth $1.00 and this box is worth $2.00.  This should be the best Christmas Party ever.  Whistling [:-^]

I use Paypal exclusively, however, something came to light the other day. I noticed one other engine I was going to bid on. However, the seller REFUSED to take paypal. He stated he had been burned too many times by Paypal, and politely suggested I look at www.paypalsucks.com

I read the forum postings, etc. on the site. I'm sure there have been a couple instances where sellers have been burned. BUT, that's the risk of running a business. I'd rather know I have the option of Paypal on my side. As a side note with paypal..I've read their TOS. If you have ANY problem with a paypal seller/buyer, immediately notify paypal/ebay. One of the posters stated that a buyer wanted to return an item he bought, saying it wasn't what he wanted. The seller agreed; the box was sent back empty after the money was credited back to the account. Ok, call the police! That's a criminal act. And the seller was whining because Paypal wouldn't do anything because after a month or so, no police report had been made.

 Just FYI type stuff...

Oh, BTW, did you REALLY put a Uhaul box on Ebay? I think it would be hilarious!

Jim: I MAY be able to get you an UNFOLDED U-Haul box for a super good price. These are VERY rare and I think only 5 billion of them are known to exist. Let me know if you're interested. Thumbs Up [tup]

Buckeye Riveter: Sounds like a great plan!!! Be sure to take pictures of the kids excited faces as you unveil each rare box. Thumbs Up [tup] Laugh [(-D]

yallaen: I am not a big fan of PayPal. But the alternative of NO protection is even worse. Once you send a money order or check and it gets cashed, you are at the mercy of the seller. At least with PayPal, I can dispute the sale with PayPal or VISA and get my money back. I have had ONE dispute that I used PayPal for and it worked quite well.
The box on E-Bay...I'm really thinking about it. All I need to do is get a magic marker and write "Lieonell" on the side and say it previously contained a 773 loco. What worries me is people will actually BID on it!!!!Shock [:O]

Since you don't know the difference between that box and your uhaul box, perhaps you shouldn't comment.

The collector box doesn't interest me, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth what the winning bidder paid. I don't collect coins or stamps either, but still, they can be quite valuable to some.
