CSXect, I have one of the two sets that engine came in. The maker is a longstanding mystery. Sask_Tinplater believes it was made by Alps for someone else who stamped their own logo in it. I don't know the company that goes with the logo. It's a nice train.

@Frank53, though the photo's on the link you provided are somewhat slow, it has been worth the wait. I think you're building a great layout! I love the Lionel factory. Very nice job!

Thanks for the info I found the trade mark listed in a book on old tin toys but the caption underneth the logo said company unknown. I got the loco and caboose for $15 at an estate auction. I saw a set on ebay and the seller did not know who the maker is either. I guess this gives the train a bit of a story and mystery to add to its charm.

I will stay tuned because I have am developing plans for a very small layout in a special spot in my garage. Thanks to your pictures I have been able to develop a plan for a similar type of layout but much much smaller.

FJ and G: If you built that with a screw driver I guess you could make a space shuttle with a full set of Sanp-on tools, very nice.

Having some fun making an Army train for my son. Picked up a U36B really cheap on e-bay and printed out some images from the internet. A little rubber cement and we have an Army engine.

Somebody was asking about snow and what to use, I tried this from an article in CTT a few years back. 1) Put down strips of cotton and staple it to the layout, 2) If you want a glitter effect spray hair spray(I used the pump bottle-not aerosol spray) and add glitter flakes(about quarter inch size), the above items can be purchased at a craft store for a few dollars.   It may take a couple tries so don't give up if doing snow!  

Don't have it on this layout, had it a few years ago.
