Welcome J&J13.

MTLover, you have some old info there on the abandoned engines. The shed was accidentally burned in the 1960's so the engines have been outside for 40 years. in the last few years a group has been slowly stabilizing them in thier current state of disrepair at least it will not get worse. Here is a link with newer info and pics. http://www.state.me.us/doc/parks/programs/history/allagash/rr.htm

The one I am most interested is sadly the one in worse shape the cabless 4-6-0 ex-NYC/ ex-Grasse River RR. It is the only steam surviver (if you can call it that) from this logging line. I am making a short doc.video about the remaining GRR equiptment. The best known and best preserved ex-GRR piece is the ex-LO&S gas electric still pulling pasengers in the fall at Strasburg RR seen halfway down this link. http://www.northeast.railfan.net/strasburg.html

As for the "Lion". I am a big fan of very early steam. I grew up in DC near the Smithsonian's John Bull and spent much time at my Fav RR Museum the B&O Museum with their great 1920's era wooden replicas of experimental early 1800's steamers along with some real survivors of the era. I have not seen it since the roof collapse. I wi***hem the best recovery. Great resorse.

As for the brush clippers Parks usually don't like that kind of thing.

Also before I forget the train show that I want to saturday was great! I went there with $7.52 in cash and came out with 3 packets of track, 2 packets of Mc Henry coulpers, and a faffle ticket for a 4' x 8' HO ready to Roll layout.
In all it cost me $7.50 including a $2 entry fee. As I say for train shows Come happy go Broke.

J&J13,

Welcome to this thread. Feel free to contribute anytime about anything. That goes for all newbies reading this area who haven't yet penned a word. PS Young cold be 85! ALL are welcome!

I just ordered my first BEEPs, I can't wait to check 'em out and put them through their paces. I love low-end trains. I've got a scale hudson from L, but the low-end stuff is where the fun is for me. Model railroading was never about having the most expensive stuff. For me, it's about operating any darn thing that'll go down the tracks.

I do really like low priced engines and am really happy that it seems more and more new and different models of this type are coming out. I think it is great that there are some well detailed and even some scale engines now fit in to this catagory. The Lionel Docksider is great (if you keep it mute) the K-line Plymouth is great too. The K-line Porter is not really scale but I love mine and it runs like a top. I hope the K-line engines reappear soon. The Beep I have is the version Taylor Trucks made (i.e. pre-RMT) but it is nice too.

I really like these smaller engines because I don't have much room. Tighter turns look better with smaller engines in my opinion anyway.

I have started a collection of Halloween themed trains and will eventually make a collapsable Halloween layout for them. This I have planned as a really fun little O-27 fantasy. It will be lots of fun. Last year it was really temporary with sheets on a table but really fun to see the trick or treaters see it. So far I have the General w/caboose from last year and the Docksider w/caboose and operating gondola are on order for this year. I also have a few cars from the 1983 lionel Black Cave Flyer set that I really coveted as a child (to date myself as an 80's kid).

MTL,the whole opposite side of the country from Maine, 10 miles from Mexico, in CA. As far as I can tell they are in the middle of a state park. Since you are closer you should maybe join the group that is already working on them. I think they may be too far gone but who knows. I am just glad they are still there and have been stablized, preserved ibn place where they have sat since the 1930's. In a way that is more romantic like a legend than doing anything else with them.

All of the steam engines of a shortline logging RR abandoned in the woods for seventy years ...how cool is that.

get the insurance.

Hey, ebayers, I just bought a transformer on ebay and it arrived in little pieces. Thank God for insurance. Even though the insurance claim procedure isn't easy at the post office, I should get most of my money back. Always buy the insurance or risk losing your purchase.

Looks German to me. Except the cars and station make it US. If you wanted to model something similar I saw some imported Fleshmann On30 that looks really close. It is called "Magic Railroad" Ive never seen or heard of it before. Some of it looked pretty neat. On30 looking more and more tempting. And Bachmann has a Nice Price.

Danrnr, I spent 4 hours on friday painting an office with no windows. I was useless the rest of the day. No doubt I am down a couple brain cells from it. Talk about no fun.

I am spending the weekend welding up new framing for three portable modules. I made them out of wood a couple years ago but they are too heavy and kind of falling apart. So I have to make new frames then carefully move the old scenery skins onto the new frames. I should have spent the money and time up front made them in metal first. Then I wouldn't have to do this twice.

well I'm back for a day of trains, travling, and a anoying brother.[V] and the interview with the engiener went great! puls I got to ride in the cab of engien #1 the deisle engien they had running, 2 times and I even got to drive it!!!!![:D][:D][:D][:)][8D] along with that I got to see the 3 steam engiens they had there 2 Baldwins both are 0-4-0s. #8 and #7 sisten locos. but they can't used them because of all the regulation on steam locos[V][V] but really both of them are opperational.. and #4 that one is also a 0-4-0 but is smaller the the 2 baldwins. and the shed's roof that they are stored in is partly hed up by #7's cab roof. but what is even butter is that the engiener that I rode with in the cab on the first trip invited yes you read right invited me to go there the saturday of Mamorial day weekend and ride in the cab of engien 4 the live steam engien they have in use!!!!!! and I left there with a spike and the back side of my jeans greased up really good.[(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D] form the window of the engien cab I used as a seat. don't worry there was a small storage cabinate that I actually sat on with my legs out the window.
also my mom my brother and me stoped at a book store after and I got a CD of CLASSIC TRAIN SONGS!!!!!!!!!! 20 of the no doubt. Wabash Cannonball is the title.. and Atlas of North American Railroads....
Probably between my weekend and those few who posted what there weekend was going to be like I'd say that I had the better Saturday....[:D]

Layout Themes

Do any of you guys have themes to your layouts, and if so, what are they?

Also, any special features or special accessories or scenery that are the stars of your layout?

As for me, since I'm moving, my 8x8 is now a single loop with no scenery and a simple transformer and a few cars. I was hoping to get some ideas from what some of you guys have going on. A new home and a new layout are a few months away, so I'm spending most of my train time reading and planning for the future.

Thanks,

Dan

I have the beginnings of a normal 4x7 logging layout with a passing sideing and two spurs. It is on the back burner at the moment. Also I have plans for a Halloween themed layout that can fold up to store because I really had fun with a temporary one this past year. The trick or treaters had a blast.

Ok, im 18 (maybe the youngest here) have a slightly moderate budget, and am trying to find a Pilot Truck assembly for a Marx 1829. Its a Cast 4 wheel truck, and i only have the plate that i assume the pin would mount into. If needed, i can post pics. Any help is good help. Its a bit old, but not my oldest. My oldest is a Lionel 1684, but thats just me. Thanks...

IRU,

To find that kind of help, start a new topic on the forum and mention the problem in the title. You won't find enough here in this small fraction of the forum...by the way, you're far from the youngest in our little chat room. An 8th grader chimes in all the time. You can't miss him; he posts more than anyone in this thread of the forum.

Hey iruleyou05,

are you in college or just graduating high school? Reason I ask is that I'm only 18 as well and just try to see what other people my age are up to other than the hobby....

And if you are heading to college (I never fail to add a shameless plug...) have you considered DePaul University in Chicago? I'll be student teaching and leading orientation this year, we could talk trains (Doug Murphy, who is a member of this forum is also a faculty member there).

Just a word of caution to some. Don't reveal too much of your information here as some not so good people lurk on the Web. Don't want to rain on anyones parade, just want y'all to be careful. Otherwise, hey, have a good time, the majority of folks on this forum are great.

DW,

Good Point about privacy and too much info. As the unofficial moderator of this thread, I must now ask that my underage posters give out very little of their personal info. LUCKILY, THIS THREAD HAS STAYED PRETTY SOLIDLY ON TRAINS. Let's keep up the good work. I was on another site where several people were phishing for too much info on me. Istopped going there.

I ask that everyone keep an eye out for suspicious behavior. That being said, I find that 99% of all model train enthusiasts are super-decent human beings.

Here's to all the people that have made this thread so successful!

Now, about my problem: As I plan the next incarnation of my layout, how do I create a classic toy train layout and insert a steel mill part and make it look fine? My grandfather was an engineer for US Steel when it was still Carnegie Steel and he ran slag cars out to a dumping area for over fifty years. I want to honor him in my layout and incorporate a steel mill/ slag section and keep that toy train feel.

I thought about separating the two areas by mountains to keep them separate. Can it look good? Any opinions/feedback appreciated.

I have a idea get pics from all sides of a real steel mill / slag section and scale them to the scale that you are using it would probably be best for detail if you have color pics.

My two BEEPs came in the mail the end of last week. I love them. I got the Virginian and an Alaska RR one. They are small, solid, strong, and sharp.

Now I need a lionel railsounds diesel boxcar to add the sound. Anyone else use anything different to supplement their lack of sound?
