Train related computer question
Posted by thor on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 7:40 AM
Its very frustrating for me that so many files one wants to read nowadays are *** PDF's. I get nothing but trouble from them on every computer I've tried. We have a SONY VAIO and an HP laptop, both new both fast with plenty of drivespace and memory and PDF's lockup the computers, or take so long that I lose patience waiting. We have the latest version of the reader too.

Does anyone else find PDF's to be a pain?

I have had no trouble with them, since I switched to high speed access. When I had a dial-up connection, it was awful. It would take forever to load in. Now, no problems. Try right clicking the .pdf link, then selecting "save target as", this way you can save the file to your hard drive, then view it.

There is the link for the latest version. It takes a little while to load in.

Use them all the time without any problems. For work, I scan several of my documents and save them as PDFs. I am using Roadrunner High Speed.

Which version of Acrobat Reader are you using. Version 6 was/is horribly slow opening, even on fast computers. Upgrade to Version 7 - there is a noticable difference. And as the others have stated, pdf file sizes aren't small - rarely less than 100KB. So some form of broad band is pretty much essential. The only redeeming feature of pdf files is that they are platform and OS independent - anybody with almost any system can read them.

yours in downloading

PDF are a very, very good thing but it sounds like acrobat is giving you trouble.

Have you tried updating?
