For running MTH you need the DCS controller and hit the "any key".

You need Lionel Part No. C-CW001 and put it under the track and connect it to the U post on your transformer.  MTH has something similar, but I haven't memorized their catalog this year.

With an elongated figure 8 with a passing siding, you can run in either direction.  Wanting to be railroad oriented, I tend to run trains north or south.

Now if you are in Niagara Falls, I think you have to run clockwise in the summer, and counter-clockwise in the winter...

I wonder what Lionel or MTH recommends ??????

Also,......if you run the same direction all the time....Will you wear out one side of your tracks ???? Hmmmmmmmmm.........

Wow, from whence do these old threads appear? I know the way I run my trains - clockwise of course - is the only manly way to do it.

The rotational spin of the Earth dictates that trains North of the Equator should run in a clockwise direction... those in the Southern Hemisphere run in a counter-clockwise... there is not sense trying to do otherwise...

How fast in scale would an O guage diecast train have to travel in order to complete a 360º (060 - 5 foot) inverted loop pulling, let's say, 5 cars behind it?

Could a Lionel Hudson or diesel do it?

Flex Trak would be a good canidate?

Has anyone ever tried this? I have never heard of it.

I'd like to see it....some 3-railer could possibly set a record?

For those of us who run clockwork trains it depends on which side of the loco the key fits. What? No one running clockwork trains? You don`t know what you are missing!

I run a large scale Christmas train on a small 4' diameter loop. I switch directions every once in a while on the theory that it will even out any wear on the wheels.

Don't know how much difference it makes though.

In the spirit of moderation, I'll concede its okay to run counter-clockwise, but only if operating two mainlines and that the outside line is the clockwise route. But this spirit of cooperation only can go so far ... [}:)]

Some time ago I read in American Flyers operating instructions that the engines ran better one direction that the other. If I remember right it was clock wise. I avoided this topic the last time but could not pass up sticking my nose in this time.

I'm left handed and I run my trains clockwise. Two loops of track now means the outer is clockwise, the inner - counter clockwise.

I'm glad this topic has shown up again, so we can restate the rules.

Well, I don't mind recycling threads - - - gives newcomers a chance to contribute a bit - isn't it interesting how the same things seem to come up again - I know I've thought of threads only to realize I've already posted something like it myself. I run clockwise on my rather convoluted and twisted loop. It seems against nature to go the other way...

Hey,hey Big-Boy-4005,what comes around goes around[(-D].Not all of us can read every thread all the time. And some new members have just started viewing this forum.Be more kind, and gentle. And I didn't assume everyone has a loop, but some people do,because they responded.[:D]My temporary layout has a loop, and a reverseing loop. But the stationary layout will have a loop, but be much more complex when done.[2c]

Since I run concentric loops that are following the same basic oval shape, I run them in different directions on the various loops to break up the action. ie, counterclockwise on the outer, clockwise on the next one in , counterclockwise on the next one, etc.
