Cracker Barrel
Posted by Brutus on Sunday, August 28, 2005 11:14 AM
We were enjoying dinner at the Cracker Barrel the other day and in the shop area I found they are selling a model Cracker Barrel restaurant that lights up for about $25. I didn't have a ruler with me, but it looked like it was about the right size to fit on an O gauge set - anybody got this or checked it out? I think I might go back with a ruler and see if the front door was about 1.75 to 2 inches tall.... Is there a better way to check for the scale, to see if it will look right on a layout? Thanks for any help!

I think your approach of measuring some things is the right way to go. Multiply the inches by 4 and that's what it would measure in feet in real life. But you sound like you already know that!

Is the rest of your layout scale? If not, wouldn't just asking "will it look right on MY layout?" be the important decider? But since you can't take it home to try it out, [:D], I like your idea of measuring so that you'll know how it will compare to the rest of your stuff.

sounds nice - walt

Jim, If you go back and measure can you post your findings, that would be an interesting piece for a layout. [^]

Jim, I think your idea to measure the front door is on the right track (so to speak). You could compare it to a standard door, which is 6'8 high, or about 1 11/16" in O. However, since front doors are often non-standard, why not take a tape and measure the prototype's door, as well as the height of the porch roof that they all seem to have.

( Marietta ). It's in Cambridge. I have to agree, it's got great food.
I'll bet Chief wishes he would have ate at one.

Cracker Barrel - there's a few here in Illinois too - has all sorts of things one might use for a toy train layout in the store you must wander through before hitting the restaurant. I found a roughly O scale Harley, a gas pump and a few figures - not to mention some more tin-plate circus-like items in the classic toys section a few years ago.

Will do - yeah, they've got sweet tea - I almost always have the country fried steak with mashed potatoes, sawmill gravy, green beans and corn. This time I had the chicken livers, green beans, hash brown potatoes and biscuits. Yum! Warshed it down with diet root beer though.

I'll let you guys know what I find out - but don't know when I'll get back there - we've got a lot of stuff going on for the next 2 weeks or so...

Glad to know I'm on about the right track figuring out the scale - it did look nice with some neat details on the front porch etc!

Krispy Kreme recently opened a couple of stores here, their second attempt in Austin. They must compete with the formidable and beloved Round-Rock donut, which is literally unlike anything you have ever eaten.

Lots of walking heart-attacks-to-be in this hobby, I guess! Great for the cardiologists out there, and sure to keep them gainfully employed in the years ahead. Hopefully you'll still be around to watch the grandkids play with your trains as they grow up. And you guys will really love the lifestyle changes you'll have to make after the big one hits! Not trying to scare anyone. . . just a case of been there, done that!

Us Yanks Have "Bob Evans" ! The "Crack" Generaly does have good food! No doubt!
But as far as "Biscuts and gravy" it's had to beat "Bob's" [dinner]
May I suggest placing the model of the "Cracker barrel" next to a sawmill. Cuz I swear that's where they get their gravy! Right off the sawmill floor! [:D] (Personal opinion only! I do like their French toast!)

Here is Buckeye Land we are the home of Wendy's, White Castle, Bob Evans, Max & Erma's, and the most famous resturant of TV fame, Tony Pacco's in Toledo. We have been a test market for years and years. All of the chains try out their new stores and products on us. SR 161 across the north end of town used to be in the Guiness Book of Records for the number of chain resturants.

We have Krispy Kreme here in Missouri, but I only like them when they are hot - as soon as they drop down to room temp, they become disgusting.

Alan,

Just had a friend pass away from the "big one", he had just completed an extensive physical and was in the best shape of his life. He had done everything right, no history or heart problems in his family, ate right, exercised and had no bad habits. He didn't even make it to the hospital, go figure. Sure, good eating habits and exercise are important, but having a good time and reducing stress are also extremely important. To each his own.

Allan, basically, I do eat right. Just a few slips. Plenty of exercise since I retired [as this group will testify, like yesterday digging a trench to put in electrical cable in the hot sun, completely cementing in a pond spillway by hand mixing concrete and so on and so on]. My cholesterol was 80 at my last visit to the cardologist in the spring. Don't smoke and don't pertake of hardly any alcohol [all not good for the heart, well Cardologists say one good drink a day is good]. Guess what? Accidently [through some tests for something else] found some restrictions in arteries. Heart in excellent shape. Had six bypasses last November. I'm fine. You all need to attend the "Mended Hearts" [National Organization] meetings. Diet and exercise are very good but other things contribute to heart problems [as Jon's friend]. Love Krispy Kreme donuts but have not eaten one in about 6 months. Love Cracker Barrel but have not eaten at one in two months. The country ham, eggs, grits and biscuits my wife cooked Saturday was the first breakfast I have had like that in 4 months. Think I'm OK. I drink a lot of sweet ice tea [using Splenda recommended by our dietitian]. Tea is good for the heart [read the box on Lipton]. I believe that all persons over 50 should have nuclear dye stress test. Then if it shows problems, all the other procedures to find out if you need stints or bypasses. PROBLEM! Insurance companies would rather you have a heart attack than prevent it. I'm lucky and I think the good Lord for the way I found out and corrected a problem that could have caused my problems several years from now. Moderation and visit your Dr.

When I see a building or people that I might like for my layout and no ruler handy, I use my thumb (an O scale 6' from tip to 1st knuckle). Gives me a ballpark idea.
