I was fortunate enough to attend this show a long time ago and it was like train heaven in the Windy City. Sure wish it was closer.

I was there today. Can anyone tell me about the Lionel boxes that are white with red and black lettering. I purchased an REA refer car and that was the box it came in.

Depends on which reefer you purchased - modern Lionel has offered at least 4 REA reefers.

Based on the box description, I'm guessing yours is the 9863 (1974-76). The "Type III" white box with red "LIONEL" and "O AND O27 GAUGE", and black "FREIGHT CARRIER" was used from 1975-1986 for traditional rolling stock. The box should also have color photos of rolling stock. [Information is from Greenberg's Guide to Lionel Trains 1970-1991, Volume II.]

It is a 6-5709 REA refer. You described the box real well.
