TAXES on TOY TRAINS
Posted by spankybird on Friday, April 1, 2005 5:39 AM
I just heard on our local TV station that a congressman from NC is considering bringing back a luxury taxes on Model Trains. They are planning on checking on warranty registrations from the manufactures to see who bought what engines and use the list prices are for the basis of the taxes. [:(!][:(][8]

I'm hoping this is your April Fool joke Tom, but I'll get on my soap box anyway.

[soapbox]

With the talk of a national ID card, all the other infringements on privacy, and taxes on everything I'm beginning ro wonder are we back in Germany in the 30's or cold war Russia. Is Homeland Security an updated version of the Gestapo or KGB?

Is that the FBI knocking at the door?[:O]

Naw, that was South Carolina.

My source says that it is an annual luxery tax of 20% of the depreciated (appreciated) FMV of the train. If North Carolina gets away with it, the state organization of taxing authorities intends to follow suit as soon as their respective legislatures can act

Good April Fools.

Regardless, they have looked at some similar measures here in TAXUS, but realized the cost to beef up the state resources to track and collect these additional taxes in TAXUS exceeded the revenue they would generate.

Rosyville should be a hotbed of tax revenue for NC. I heard that there is some guy who lives there that owns millions and millions of dollars in trains. They should throw the tax book at him.[:D]

Sounds like a good plan to me! I have no problem with residents of North Carolina being taxed for trains or anything else.

Allan, this is a "War Between the States" [War of Northern Aggression] thing. Now as a good old Virginian, you can not side with those Yanks. They make these posts while I'm out of town traveling to Bass Pro Shops and Cablea's and hope the hotel does not have a computer.

Glad I never pay sales tax - I live in Oregon. [:P]

See how your state measures up for State/Local taxes as % of income:

"Allan, this is a "War Between the States" [War of Northern Aggression] thing. Now as a good old Virginian, you can not side with those Yanks."
----------------------

But I likely would be considered something of a Yankee spy! After all, I was born and raised in Ohio, and also lived some years in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Maryland (the state that couldn't make up its mind) before moving here.

The truth be known though, this (Virginia) is the nicest part of the lower 48 I've lived in, and North Carolina--which is just down the orad--is pretty darn nice, as well (my sister and brother-in-law live just outside of Charlotte). And I really wouldn't want to see those Tarheels get taxed for their trains (which will never happen anyhow) because my b-in-law is a big-time LGB enthusiast.

About the only thing that can top my current location as a pleasant place to reside is Hawaii, where I lived for some 18 years.

my dream is of the South. South Dakota, that is. Someday, I'd like to save up enough $$$ and retire to a modest home on a dirt road, miles from traffic; me and a pack of beagles and a bunch of toy trains; and possibly a lush Russian mail order bride

David, maybe we all should donate $20 each toward you a trip to Russia and then you can bring one back. [:D] That is just what you need [a Russian bride]. Now Allan, if you like sweet iced tea and grits and corn bread [without sugar] cooked on a grittle, you are now one of "usuns". We still need to get together the next time I'm in Roanoke.

Geez, David, my dream is quite similar--including the Russian bride part of it! Actually I had a Russian girlfriend here until a couple of years ago, but a job transfer took her to Texas. Bummer! Nevertheless, in the next year or so I hope to buy a modest home not too far from here--also somewhat removed from the rest of "humanity"--for me and my Aussie pooch. It'll have to have a decent-size fenced-in back yard for my garden railroading "habit" and the dog, along with sufficient space inside to at least handle my O gauge and Standard Gauge interests. I can wait for another Russian lady to come along.

Chief: Yes I do enjoy grits and cornbread--the real stuff! I'm not big on sweetened iced tea, but do have a liking for Virginia ham. Nobody has tried to lynch me yet, so I guess this transplanted Yank has been fairly well accepted in these parts. I also do some editorial work for the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies from time to time, and you can probably guess which side tends to be more represented in that work.

Typical liberals, just like Florida, tax toliet paper and any thing else they can. Suprised they don't have a
tax on toilets---but then again we do pay an extra sewage tax heer in MD. Guses thats so so the liberals can get rid of their "excess"!! Ha![:)][:)]
