Having been born in Baltimore I could easily choose the B&O. I also have a fond memory of riding on the Strasburg with my granddad.

However, I have lived in the Pacific Northwest ever since I was 10 and I think I should choose livery from the railroads from the area. I like the railroads that make up the BNSF. I also like the SP, I saw a lot of Black Widow diesels growing up.

Favorite short-line: Columbus & Greenville RY that crosses Mississippi. Both of my grandfathers and one uncle worked for it many years ago.

Favorite fallen-flag: Toss-up between the Southern, the Seaboard Air Line and the Pennsy.

Favorite class 1: Sad to say, but all of the current corporate giants just don't ring my bell.

[#welcome][#welcome][#welcome] I too am from the region, Hazleton, Pa.
I know lots of giz from SHAMOKIN. How bout the names BILL MOORE, TOM JUICE LETCAVAGE, DAVE SHINSKI, and from MT CARMEL CHUCK ZUKAS? I went or played football with these giz at MANSFIELD STATE COLLEGE in the early 70's.
Join us at the coffee pot lots of good stuff there.

My favorite R.R. has with out a second thought have to be the PENNSY ( screen name). Because about 4 blocks from my house is where they use to run a Ore train from the Northumberland yard right through Shamokin to Mt Carmel. It was a tough grade of about 2-2 1/2 % the usually used 3-4 I-1 decapodes to haul the 100 plus car Ore train.
I really wish I was around for that the guys a the train club I belong to said it was a sight to see. And before I forget the former Reading R.R. runs right past my house.

The Central of New Jersey for its logo alone. It also had all sorts of funky little locomotives that were just the cats meow.
Also Lionel Lines and American Flyer Lines. When I was still working as an S.P. and then U.P. locomotive engineer and the dispatcher would park us in sidings for untold hours upon hours, I would become bored and go out on the locomotive with a wet towel and write "Lionel Lines" logos in the dirty grime of the locos hood.

Below are two old photo taken as they cleaned up the wreck of the National Limited. In the first photo you can clearly see the tunnel in the background. Our sleeper car was in this tunnel when the engines derailed. I believe there were two F units, a baggage car and a diner that went off the tracks. We were in the car directly behind the diner. I have a buddy that bike rides with me. Maybe we should head down there and ride the trail this spring. I'm glad everyone has enjoyed this story. [:)]

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad
and here is why[:D]

The Train Wreck
We left Baltimore’s Mount Royal Station in the usual fashion late in the evening. The big diesel engines growled as the brakes squealed entering the train shed. We boarded and took our seats in the sleeper car as usual. In the middle of the night we awoke from an awful commotion. The porter was yelling and my mother said we had to move. We left the compartment and began walking towards the back of the train. Injured passengers in the coach behind us could be seen in the dim blue night lights. Relocating to another sleeper car I fell back to sleep.

The train was traveling backwards when I awoke the next morning, and breakfast was not being served. At mid morning the train stopped in a small mountain town. We disembarked and walked to a small coffee shop near the train platform. A small breakfast was purchased, and we returned to the train just in time to see a railroad relic uncouple from the remanet of our train. The small coal black steam engine chugged along the tracks towards the old roundhouse, much to my delight.

Later we learned that our train had been wrecked when it struck a rock slide exiting a tunnel. The engines and baggage cars derailed and plunged from a bridge into a steep river gorge. Several cars left the tracks, including the dining car located directly ahead of our sleeper. The engineer and fireman were killed in the wreck.

March 2002
To celebrate my birthday this year, Molly and Kathy planned an outing at North Bend State Park in West Virginia. Molly being a senior at WVU, would meet us at the park. After reading the literature in the room at the park’s lodge, we discovered that the bike trail followed the tracks of the B&O National Limited. In the pamphlet it said that on May 31, 1956, the B&O’s National Limited exited Tunnel No. 13, struck a rock on the tracks and plunged into the creek, killing the engineer and fireman. I excitedly read to Kathy and Molly the story in the pamphlet, and Kathy looked at me and said that was the same story I had been telling her for years about my train wreck. We drove down to the wreck site and tunnel and took photos. What a wonderful birthday surprise!

Tough question! After the Lionel Lines, I'd have to list the pre-MTA Long Island Rail Road, New Haven, P-Company, & Rutland. And I have a soft-spot for the New York, Ontario, & Western.

If somebody wanted to get a free train ride, all they would have to do is board the train, and when the conductor comes to collect the tickets, go in to the bathroom and sit there untill he gos away.

Where my grandfather and my uncle (his son) each worked over forty years: The Lehigh Valley Railroad

Actually my uncle worked for Conrail (the LV part) when that was formed in 1976 but started with the Valley in 1955.
