Good Idea, Laz.

But my layout is just temporary...

I am building a layout witch requires 50 pieces of 027 track.

Later I am also going to build 2 sidings.

The layout is in the January 2005 special edition of Model Railroader.

Thanx for the tip.,

Colin

Sorry bout the name mixup 1000 pardons.
That sounds pretty neat, the idear of the gang car which makes me think of the Industrial Rail trolleys. They are inexpwensive and it you take off the top part you could fasion it to anything you want.

I think I should change my name to Colin [:D]

Since the layout I am formulating in my head and on endless peices of paper is all post war lionel. I would probably go with the smallest thing I can find. I envision it entering the tunnel and heading down. Since I am figuring on a lower level subway, I can just make the drop to the same level over time. It could even wind around below to have some time lag before it reappears on the surface. I would then have it come back up, perhaps behind a mountain and have it wind it's way into the scene so it reapperas from a completely different section. It could then hit an old style bumper and head back off behind the mountain to then remerge from teh tunnel later.

The more I think about it being a train pulling cars of ore, the less inclined I am to undertake it right away. First off, it would have to emerge from the tunnel with coal, but would have to disappear somewhere to re-enter the lower level. I could accompli***his with a few ore dump cars - I have one. Secondly, I am concerned about how big it would appear. I don't really want it to be a full size train.

THis has me leaning towards doing it the easy way, by using a gang car, or a hand car. If i came across a really beat up gang car, I would consider modeling something on that small big wheeled frame.

Colin, what kind of grassmat do you have on your layout? I like the color, looks like a lionel display layout landscape!

Laz:

thanks, that is what I had in mind, to go beneath the layout and hit a bumper.

As I think about it, mining vehicles are these gigantic-wheeled monsters, at least today. I have done a lot of work in the gold mining industry and have gotten a first hand look at what the sites look like. Coal is a different colored horse, and I like the potential interest factor of having a small train emerge from the mine pulling carts, however, it may a giant case of overkill.

Another option is to have an exit from the tunnel and have it emerge on a far area of the mining area. You know it's the same car, but looks like two different events. In this case, I could use a reliable old gang car.

You could probably do it but you'll have to use a sub platforn under the layout sort of like the disappering train tunnel from back in the 60's. I have considered this just can't find the place to add on?

Yes, cnw, that is a vintage Broncos pennant, from King Soopers, circa 1982. The orange and blue flies proudly over the layout (where, in honor of the Chief's heritage, we only drink Pepsi products).

The coal mine is neat as a pin. I have been considering planning a coal area in my next layout. It would be neat to have some track disappear down a tunnel and have a small train emerging pulling a series of carts containing coal. DOn't quite know what what I would use though - perhaps I would settle for a hand car, but haven't seen any around.

Thanks, Paul. I have to look them up. They look really sharp. Oh, Laz, I know that gold stuff. Yeah, those large nuggets litter all the local streams - scaring the fish.

Doug,
The two engines pictured are by Unique Arts. The blue one in the top picture is electric, the multi-color is a wind up. I think these were made between 1948-50.

Unique also made a set of E8's in Rock Island colors, very colorful. I read in a collectors book, from 1990's, that these were the ugliest locos made. Today, however, they are very collectable.

Both my engines are lithographed tin with a very simple 0-4-0 drive.

Unique Art made other very collectable wind-up toys prior to world war II. If yoy want to see more go on e-bay in the antique toy catagory and search for Unique Art.
The trains are usually listed in O gauge "other manufacturers"

I'm full of superlatives today. Chief, your NS engines look really sharp! Tom Baker, is that a Denver Broncos pennant? Don't feel bad about your N scale goodies - I did exactly the same thing. Laz, what a great looking mine - is the stuff in your gondolas a special color (yellow) because it is a certain type of coal? Paul, can you tell us a bit more about your wonderful engines - are they Marx? Buckeye, I love the evocative feeling of your sepia or black and white photos.

Hi everyone. I check out your photos every Sunday and for the first time have something to post myself. And its a DOUBLE FEATURE! Today was a big day in San Francisco, because not only did I complete my basic benchwork (and install the wine cellar underneath -- this is Northern California, afterall -- but I got the new Lionel Overland Freight running, complete with the great new SD-70 engine, intermodal cars, and autocarriers. This new round of autocarriers is made of better materials, and has metal ladders. Its a great looking train, and the sound is fantastic.

Here is a general shot showing the engine blowing diesel fumes past my very first accessory, the lighted Lionel freight station.

Here is another shot of the train as it makes its way into a turn, moving past a bunch of stuff that's headed to eBay, the sad reminder of my attempt to conserve space by switching to N). Note the exciting riches that lurk beneath the surface. You guys in the South have your oil, and WV has its coal, but here in NorCal, we have our wine.

Thanks again to Spankybird for posting the instructions about uploading photos.

Best to all,

Tom Baker

Chief--no reason at all to feel ashamed, you just retired, got a daughter married off and that knife mark on your chest is a pretty good excuse to take things slow. Life just gets better and better, now if it's next year at this time and you're still on the carpet we will need to have a discussion[:)]

MAN. I'm ashamed to post my prictures on my temp carpet layout.
Well, my new Lionel SD80 MAC in TMCC being run by DCS and DCS remote pulling a precious cargo of John Deere tractors and passing a coal train.

Another view.

A close up of the Lionel SD80 MAC [you can just see the diesel smoke comming out if yu look at the coal in the hopper car behind it. light carpet will not allow me to show smoke]

Another view.

Hi GUYS,
Heres my contribution to the ever popular Sunday photo fun.
The story to this part of my layout(under the celar steps) is that where I grew up in NE pa. we come from hard coal country people are Known as COALCRACKERS.
I wanted to make astrip mine operation. When we were kids we played in the stripping holes and one of the games was called bowling fo junk. People would throw away old used tires and other junk and we would roll them down into the holes to see what we could hit. With enough said here are my bowling pics.

Bowling for junk......

Enjoy????????????????

An Amtrak Genesis pulls out from the station, thru the mountains.

A view through the double track 60" long Howe Truss Bridge.
Alas, back to work (on the layout that is).....Tim
