Thank you addressing this problem! I wouldn't mind a fee of like $5 or less. Its funny ben has a "evil twin"![swg]. What I would like to know is why do trolls like to make others??? Inever got that.

LOL - Wow, what a paranoid bunch! What are we trying to do, revive McCarthyism? Actually, I find Danny Christopher and his "friends" more comical than threatening or annoying. Some of you guys really need to lighten up!

As for the fee issue, you need only to go back to this past March and see what happened when OGR tried to impose one. All hell broke loose and that's an understatement. Although the OGR management dropped the idea and found sponsors to subsidize the expense, the damage was already done. A lot of good people left and it hasn't been the same since. Although I still go there on occasion, I don't find it near as interesting as it once was.

If a few bucks a year for a forum runs a person away, we do not need them anyway. Sorry, but that is how I feel. Don't really think they are talking about that if you read through Bergie's last post. Glad to see him weed out the trouble makers. Doug, I see you only posted only 43 times since August 2003. Would love to see you around more often. God bless.

ANY changes mean I'm gone. If a poster is just causing trouble, ban him but I'm not putting my credit card out on the internet and there are free forums out there that will come to the fore. Increased censorship OGR style will have the same effect. Ban the idiots and leave it at that. Don.t even publicize that you are banning them, just quietly ban them.

Thanks ChiefEagles, I do lurk here more than I post. I always enjoy reading your posts and some of the other members as well. I will say that I got tired of reading all of the OGR bashing whether it was deserved or not, but I didn't go off the deep end over it. Regarding the fee idea, I think a lot of us can recall all of the commotion it caused on the OGR forum. I would hate to see it happen here but apparently Bergie put that issue to rest in his last post.

The sad part of it is, we never had any problems over here until that OGR mess last Spring. That's when M. DONALDSON, Sandy Jorgesen, etc. showed up over here.

Oh - and Buckthorrne: I think Polska got the boot a few weeks back. [^]

this place goes pay-per-view...im outa here... and you lost someone that has real railroad experiance that he is willing to share for free....even with some of the bull that pops up here form time to time...im willing to put up with a little bickering form time to time to keep it a free sight... i understand that im just as guilty once in a while for being a hot head...but i also do contribut a lot of usefull info to eveyone in here.... besides... going pay-per-view might eliminat some of it..but the hard core trouble makers wouldnt care..... i live the the policy that is....if you dont like it... dont read it..look at it...or listen to it... that always seems to work the best in the long run..insted of trying to force regulat.. things most of the time work out on thier own.... i know at times someone of a higher power needs to step in..but thats why i said most of the time....
well..just my thougths..

I think, in short, that a fee would be tantamount to throwing out the baby with the bath water... And only moreso depending on how high the fee is set, while any reasonable fee would be more effective at deterring worthwhile posters than determined bad apples.

As for banning anon e-mail, I would suggest that this should only be done on a last resort basis, and if it becomes necessary, don't make it retroactive. It may not even be fully effective since there are so many different anon e-mail services, and even beyond that many internet providers give their users multiple e-mails.

Your most effective tool should be monitoring IPs. I don't know what forum software is being used, but I believe most give the ability to track IP's from which posts are made and from which users log in, and you can usually ban IP's if there are multiple registrations of troublesome users from an IP or range of IP's... And this usually is a second resort when banning an e-mail address doesn't deter a troublesome user.

I know it's more work, but I'm sure it would be appreciated and help this forum be the most useful it can be.

A fee was going to be charged on OGR and the response was negative, so they got some sponsers to help pay.
Maybe that should be done here.
Dave.

Isn't there something to do with computers and their ISP address? I mean, if everytime we log into the site, our ISP address is supposed to be registered. So i'm sure there is software to be had that could let the nice forum moderators police the multaple posters. Aside from that i just ignore the wimps, call it keyboard muscles instead of beer muscles. Bill

Chris: before you you make a statement you should do a background check. I explained in detail the situation on ogr, and that I am using northern 1 over hear as it was too much of a hastle to change it to my real name which most know that post over here often.
You must have missed the post by Rich Melvin himself admitting he kicked me off ogr for being anti MTH. Shame on you, you need to keep up with posts to make a comment like you just did. Do a search and find it. My name is Dave Roxin, and you have no right to make fun of me.
Trolling is frowned on over here and you need to stop it. Like walter said, some people get their kicks out of following others around and flaming them.
Also note I sign my real name to my comments. Why don't you

quick suggestion, why not make it so that you have to be a subscriber to a magazine to use its forum.

EX: register your Trains mag customer ID, and you can use the trains fourm, register you model railroader customer ID and you can use the MR forum.

(you have to be a subscriber, can buy your mags)

Brak70101, now that sounds like an excellent idea. You help support the board by subscribing to the mag. Good idea. Dave Roxin.

Another advantage to a fee is I doubt a troll would pay the fee four times over to troll here under four screen names. He may not even be willing to pay the fee altogether.

I Use Lehigh Valley Railroad on ALL the forums I am on. Atlas, OGR, Here, 3rdRail, MCSS, RR.net, Railfan.net.

Are you or are you not "Bill August" on OGR, because you two seem to have the same roster, and the same problematic Atlas RS-1. Maybe you two should get together sometime.

EDIT - Added Links

Look there for Bill August wanting to know how many track could DCS operate

And there for Roxin2002 asking the same qeastion.

I would be happy to support this forum with a reasonable fee, even though I don't participate here as often as I would like. If you end up losing those who expect a free ride, then you've really lost nothing.

This isn't about the money, it's about the behavior of a few individuals. Bergie has already said that there will not be a fee. Jerks have money too, and are happy to spend it if it allows them to have their fun.

Erik, if you want this nonsense to stop, please don't make these posts. Just nuke the suckers. You are just being too polite. This discussion has become pointless, and is now creating things like Scrooge. Calling attention to it is not the way to get it to stop.

Bergie(and the other admins) ;

I hope you don't ban people who have E-Mail accounts such as
Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. Many people only have that access to E-Mail.
This is my case. As a matter of fact my Hotmail account is such
an "oldie" that my password is only 4 letters long! I'm retired and
don't have a bunch of extra money to spend on "fee-for-service"
accounts. Again, I'm sure that there are others here that are in the
same boat. I think your best move would to be to, as some others
have suggested, just quietly remove/lock/ban the hecklers from
here. This would not be the same as censorship, I don't believe,
it would just serve to make the board more pleasant. As for multiple
aliases, again, there are also many honest reasons why an account
could show more than one participant. Family members posting
from the same computer, shared accounts, unsecured computers
in the workplace, etc. So, again, maybe the only way is to just cut
out the "wise guys" when they get out of hand. Publish and establish
a set of etiquette rules like the other boards on the 'Net and go with
them. This sort of reminds me of way back in grade school when
the nuns would keep the whole class after school because one
student talked. Unfair punishment. I am a moderator of several
years now of another board and this is the way we deal with it over
there. The acions are done on the basis of conduct or violation
of the rules, not just unilateral action upon the entire population
of the forum or thread. On my board there are a lot of students
and youngsters who post from multiple locations and are often
on a shared or family account so they will have many different
ISP address with the same name and/or many names on the
same ISP address. They, too, usually have limited funds, so a
free E-Mail address is their mailbox.

Hope this is a little bit helpful and informative.

BTW... There are lots of folks who like "classic/antique" computers
as well as other things. If any of you all are "geeks", gadgeteers",
or just like "different" technology, visit my other hangout...

"www.applefritter.com" and check out the different forums. Heck we
even discussed from time to time using computers to control toys,
train layouts, and almost everything else! The "hacks" section is really
informative as it deals with electrical and electronics construction
projects utilizing computers, lighting, power supplies, etc. While
the board primarily centers around Apple computers, many ideas
are transferrable to model railroading such as low-voltage wiring
and power supplies.

We are a diverse group ranging from 11- 62 years old.

Gotta go now. Thanks for letting me say this
