Sun and 30. 40s for the high today.

Tonight is our monthly club meet. Charlie has decided to stay home and continue his moving adventure. I will miss him as he's always there. Joints are achy again today but all these people dropping dead from drugstore pain killers I am going with aspirin. Enjoy the weekend..S.J.

It is like your  "Jones Boys" Chief.  Beyond help.

Yep it is Ray. That is why we people call Marseilles,   Marstucky. Laugh   The overall economy here is poor at best the towns are run down and depressed. Almost like there is no middle class at all.

Marseilles, Seneca, and Ottawa were boom towns in WW2 because of the shipyards in Seneca where they made the LSTs and the heavy industry that supported it.  Over 20,000 people worked in the Seneca yards alone. Today Seneca has 2,100 people Marseilles has 5,100 and Ottawa is like 17,000 http://www.lib.niu.edu/1995/ihy950467.html

Today is Sandra's birthday so we will be seeing the daughter and granddaughter later on.  She may even get a call from my son. Maybe I will make a cake. Cake

Sunny and real warm.  No wind today even though calling for high surf on the Outer Banks.  Got to run errands with Wifey.  Then go to the Hunters Haven.  Got hockey game tonight with Mayors.  Taking Jeanie, David [Hunters Haven, boys, Frankie and Maddox.  See, I'm in charge of the tickets.  Had a bunch left over.  Really not a hockey fan but free suite and food. The mother and father got divorced the year we moved here. There are six kids three of them still live here most the time alone. They come and go depending on where they are wanted on warrants. The mother is a teacher for CPS and has an apartment in the city so that she can keep her job in the Chicago school system and may be gone for weeks at a time. The kids float from there to here. The dad lives in town but I don’t think he can go to the house. The place is a very run down double-wide trailer with a added roof that is way over 30 years old and beat. I am amazed it is still standing. No one will spend a dime on it till the property split is done and that won't be till the youngest is out of school. They all have police records and the sister who got stabbed has two kids from a guy in jail. One is two and the other is a newborn. Bet they are living on the government dime.

Kev - That's a horrible situation you moved in on! Good neighbors are worth gold!

Sounds like the "Jones Boys" and sisters I am always talking about.  Tried to help them but could not.  Lived with Grandparents who gave them nothing as they had nothing.  One sister stays in jail like brothers.  Other sister has kids and kids with guy who set her on fire and she later married. YES!!!  Sounds like that series on Show Time where Dad stays drunk all the time and daughter tries to keep the house, kids and etc going as a family.  Sad.

Good morning. It's 55° with 98% humidity. The high will be 72°.

Looks like we might get a little rain today. Today I'll probably be body mounting Kadee couplers on some freight cars I got recently. Other than that I don't think I'll be doing much. I've learned this new modem takes a bit longer than the old one to get up to speed. If I start the computer too soon it can't load some programs that need to be online. So the new rule here is start on blue. When the modems sync LED turns from green to blue start the computer. I can live with that.

I know Elliot is correct.  I joined the forum in March 2004. The next thing I knew you were telling everyone I wasn't real because you could not find Roger's Corners on a map.  You then rudely asked me who I was and I told you it was none of your business.  Laugh  The next thing I know I'm being chased by the Roseyville Police Department.

I can't believe I have put up with you for 9 years. MischiefBang HeadDevil

And a lot more to come. Cool

Back from down east.  Was cold when we got there around 11.  Wind hawling so wind chill was something.  Then got to the 50's.  Wind was not quite as bad.  In the woods or next to the woods on the side wind was not blowing got real warm.  Woods full of water.  Some spots in the fields had water.  Still could drive on it without 4X4.  Sandy loam soil.  Limited till too.

Found a hunting camp.  Old bulk barn.  Dry inside with plywood walls.  Put in a floor [has metal floor with holes where hot air passed through to dry tobacco].  Hasn't been used in years.  Electricty right there.  Take big metal doors off, frame up wall with regular door and a window.  Install light and outlets.  Put in beds, microwave, frig and etc.  Stop getting up at 3:30 AM and driving an hour and fifteen minutes to farm.

Off to bed.

Evenin' All.

Home from the museum, rained like a cow whizzing on a flat rock for part of the day. Fortunately the worst of it started shortly after I got in the door. Glad I left early so I could miss the worst of the knuckle head drivers. Other than a few DCS gremlins all went well. Knocked everyone's socks off with lunch, Maple Chops and Bacon Mac-n-Cheese.

Roy, Here's a critically important link for your upcoming trade show trip: http://www.in-n-out.com/locations.aspx . Laugh

Dead tired, the rain & wind woke me at 3:30 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. Will be turning in early

Nite all. Zzz

Had my trip into town this morning, helped my father clean out his car, got my new modem working after a bit of programming, looked at the possibility of remotoring an FP7 or or breaking it down for parts, installed body mounted Kadee couplers on a Roco US Army flatcar and watched some Cash Cab. Now I'm tired.

It's time to pack it in for the night. See y'all in the morning.

The three and a half legged cat is doing much better.

I have to go into work for a few hours tomorrow. Unfortianatly, last week, we had to lay every one off due to lack of work , so now its up to me to handle EVERY THING.   but as a small business owner, thats just how it goes.  Just need a few weeks of no payroll to get the bank account back into a reasonable place.

Evening gang.  Good to see Elliot back.  Says he is mainly posting on OGR but will visit us now and then.  He also corrected me in the Pot is 9 years old per him.  Come to think of it, he is right.  So, I corrected the header.

Ohayƍ,

I’m up too early for a Saturday morning, but the youngest didn’t seem to care that I wanted to sleep longer.  Someone Whistling taught him to ask only for me when he wakes up.  He opens his door in the morning and stands at his gate calling “Papa!” until I come and get him.  Fortunately for me, he is low-maintenance when he first wakes up, simply requesting a glass of chocolate milk.  Today he is enjoying a treat as my wife purchased some Entenmann’s donuts while at the grocery store yesterday.  The high today will be near 80 so I plan to take the boys over to the baseball field and also shoot some hoops with the princess.

Laz – Thanks for the link.  I wish I would have received that offer a couple of months ago as I just renewed my subscription at the beginning of February.

Prairietype – Nice work on the Alco.  Thanks for sharing your insight and photos.

Jeffrey – You should see about doing some programming work.  You could probably do it remotely from your home.

I hope you all enjoy your Friday nights.  I’ll pray for all of us in need.

Sayonara,

Joe

Almost there, maybe....

The ALCO project continues to rumble along.

Two things:

1. Forget what I said the other day about my paint mix with Testors Red and Orange.  It is close (very close) but I think comes no closer than a good paint mix for the starter.

2. This is really my first foray into paint mixing.

So starting with the basic paint mix,  I began adding another pinch here and there of yellow, orange, and green, combining these and testing, and then adding more red, and orange, and yellow drops in varying proportions and test spraying.

The paint match is really close now, but not quite.  In extremely bright low angle sunlight I can see the difference and you will too.  So I think the mixture needs a few drops of a burnt orange to achieve an exact match.

I need to say (also) that that the intent here is not to produce a perfect show-case lcomotive; this shell when acquired was already beat up with nicks and scratches, a missing pilot apron, and other issues.  I have customized this cab unit with a closed pilot and an extensive touch-up just for fun to see how far this project can go.  I just want to make a sad piece better.

The chassis frame was rough and I have re-blued it, the motor is a rebuild, and I plan to put a 3-position reverse unit in it because the 2-position refuses to function. I have a giant weight from a UP non-magnetraction junk ALCO cab that can be installed on this cab.  I want to get a windshield and headlight for the engine as well,  and make it a reliable runner.

So here are some pictures of its progress. Photo 4 is one in which the paint variation is most apparent.  In most light it can't be discerned.  But I can be an obsessive type and I'll probably keep playing with the mixture until I get it right.

Laz if we don't you can always go in and cancel the order but actually its a good price about $3 a year cheaper than by year by year.

Afternoon all been working on the layout and all seems good at present.

went and put my self in trouble again but couldn't turn this deal down Mario's trains on ebay had the Williams by Bachmann steam girls set new in box with shipping box for $281 including shipping. I've seen the GG-1 one set close to that before but I don't really care for that one. I like the original looking set. I have been wanting this for a while.

got the 2013 pocket guide in today found it about half price.

Good morning all,

Had a little rain overnight.  Partly cloudy today and colder.

We had a nice lunch yesterday with all four regulars of our train group plus one vistor who brought over his Railking Hiawatha Hudson to trouble shoot after lunch.  The engine won't run.  We tried some resets and then decided it must be the scrambled chip thing since it is Proto 1.  One of the guys with the chip kit is coming over today and we will try to reset it.  If that doesn't work, wer'e all done.

Jeffrey, nice work on the computer fix.  Wish I had someone like you around here to teach me how to be more computer literate.  My adult son does help when I get in trouble but has no patience with me.

Toots says the forum is 11 years old.  Is that the same age as the Coffee Pot?  Can't remember when I came on board.  I posted briefly several years ago according to the the Chief but did not post regularly until sometime after that.

Have a good day,

Ray
