Good morning,

It was 4 degrees when I left the house.

I left at 7:30 for Cat to get my new lenses for my two pair of frames. WOW Surprise $290.66 Ick! Hate to think what it would of been if I would of got frames to. Train budget is now Dead till I can recover. It is going to take a day or two for my eyes to adjust to the new lenses. I feel like I am looking out of a fish bowl. Confused

I need to fill out the paperwork and send it in to the Healthcare people to see if I will get anything back. Bet Not. I have not hit this years deductible Sad

LV, good luck with those tests.

Chief, Ray and Bob I sent you PMs Thanks guys.

Have a good day.  Geeked

"Women have to have more clothing (and accessories) to cover the four seasons."

Same clothes all year long, execpt insulated flannels and some sweat shirts  in the winter

Then wives observe in a disdainful tone:  "Guys wear the same stuff over and over 24/7/365 and walk around looking like street people, throwing stuff out only when it is so tattered, worn, and permeated with holes that it won't stay on them."   Yep, thats me I'll wear em to the bitter end, the sole of my work boot is currently being held on with duct tape.

When discussing the size of any addition or garage you may be pondering, you are smart to figure you can never have too much space.

This seems to be the part no woman seems to understand. When I was in construction 15 years ago, I lost count of how many people I built garages for and when it was done or at least framed, the reality of how small it was sank in.  too late at that point. 24 by 24 feet sounds like alot, even looks like alot when spray painted on the ground....    not so once the walls are up

As for a wife's questions as you posed above about why you need so much space, you can talk them into any size structure or addition you want by deviously innocently pointing out:  "Honey, you deserve and truly need more space for your overblown wardrobe and other junk keepsakes you want to keep but have no space to do so." Whistling

As for the direct opposite and totally contrary female observation (is there any other kind? Called 'women's logic'):  "We need to do such and such to add value to our home for when we move and have to sell the house."  What home improvement or addition will recover 100% of the total outlay when one sells their house?  I believe the perennial and statistical answer is NONE!!!

HOWEVER.....you have to ostensibly agree vigorously with the wife on the "value-added" observation on those additions when said expansion includes securing additional train space, garage capacity, workroom, and lawn/garden storage.  Whistling  Also, you should in a firm and confident voice observe:  "Dear,  (1) the interest rates will never be lower, and (2) the interest is tax deductible........."   to seal the deal. Thumbs UpWhistling

This is why when she annouced she needed a new car  in November, I went right along with it, cause i knew then that she wouldnt want her new car out in the weather.  I didn't even argue with her about it, just said go get it. and she did.  So the odds are in my favor of this possible project.   Not to mention our current shed is an eye sore, and I'll sweeten the deal by offering to relocate everything and tear it down.

Not to mention, I'll have some where to park my tractors, so they wont be out in the driveway any more (yeah right) either.

I have this discussion all planned out!!!!!   Whistling

Since it is your money we are spending here and your buddies on the forum only want what is best for you, Laugh my preference in this discussion is for a (your) two story structure (second story at least dormered, with heat and a/c) with a very deep 3-4 car garage with room on the first level for your work area and a powder room.  Relocate the layout and the trains as the Chief has done with his BOX.

Thats exactly what I have planned!!

And then turn over the entire basemant to the wife, finishing it off with massive cedar closets.Laugh

Have you prices Ceadar closet linings lately?

Think you will be working until you are 85 to pay it all off. Laugh  I'll be working to 85 regaurdless.  Good news is she has money left from the refi and I have some stashed away, and I'll have the fine pleasure of playing carpenter on this project, so it should be free and clear when done, I hope.

SP Ray.......was sorry to read about your church friend’s wife and her declining condtion.  He must be a mess emotionally and physically.  Maybe you can cheer him up over breakfast, a chat, or just a sympathetic ear. Angel

Yes he is pretty stressed out.  I along with his other friends have tried to help in whatever way we can.  I heard some more news about her condition yesterday.  A mutual friend said the hospice people have been called in now on her case.  That is a bad omen.  Those people are not there to help you live, their job is to make you comfortable in your final days.  It's strange, we had dinner with him on Sunday night and he did not bring it up.  The mutual friend said she heard about it on the previous Friday.  I guess, he assumed I knew or did not want to talk about it.  Thanks for the prayers for them.

Jeffrey, Angel for your preparations for the memorial service.

Got a call from my jazz band friend last night.  He just got back from playing a 14  day cruise in the Caribbean.  He said they only had to play about one hour a day.  Must be tough!  He is off again today to go to the O Scale West train show in the Bay area.

Rain is with us big time this morning but we need it.  I should say, the state needs it on the watershed in the mountains in the form of snow.  Most of it down here, just runs off and winds up in the ocean.  Anyway, good for the lawn.  Forgot to put a cover on my leaky old 87 Buick,  Better do it as soon as I get a break.  Forcast is for 4 more days of rain off and on.  At least we don't have to shovel it.

V8, congratulations on getting your new toy smogged.

later,

Ray

Bob........it just occurred to me.  You are an exceptionally proficient guy, kind of like McGuiver only better.  You could always rig up an ultra-sensitive smoke detector in a discrete place in the bathroom and quietly put a keyed lock on the door handle, on the bedroom side of the bathroom.  Also install inconspicuous amplified loud speakers inside the bathroom, hooked up to the smoke detectors.  The next time he makes a trip to the WC....see where this is going? Laugh

V8 Dennis.........that’s still short money out of your pocket to get the del Sol past emissions inspection and on the road.  Cats would have cost you a bundle!!! Thumbs Up

RT........I hope that the chat we had the other night did not cause you to have that bad day at work the next day. Whistling

HudsonJohn........re a bias towards the steamers.  I had a diesel bias for a long time because that (Alcos) was what I first received as a kid.  The bias stayed with me even after I got my 2046 from Santa because the Alcos could really fly on the curves without derailing.  I went over to the other side later in life when I became more interested in the smoke and those drive rods and the play value of the steamers.

MikeC......re  “There is nothing better than the smell of a new car.”  That’s true.  I read somewhere that the new car smell is actually from the adhesives nd other processes they use when building the car at the factory.  That smell fades with time.  But buying pre-owned puts many in a $ position to get a car with leather, maybe with heated leather seats and a heated leather steering wheel to go with them.  The leather smell does not fade with the years.  Nine plus years later and my 2004 still smells of leather every time we get in the car.  Same with the 2007, and THAT one is the dog car and somewhat a travelling fast food joint. Smile, Wink & Grin

8N........when I delegated stuff to others when taking time off of work, I initially could pretty much expect that some would take advantage.  If they report to you, you sign their paychecks, you review them for performance, and you leave them with a no-stretch deadline and the words “no surprises while I am out, call me if there is a snag.”  You never get that call.  Word gets around when they let you down the first time, after you get lit up on your return.  Then things get better.

JimmyT.......I had to laugh when you posted that the price tag of the 5.0 hit you smack in the face.  At least you had the presence not to wet your pants.  Or did you?  Shoulda called Boisenberry and taken and gotten  taken out loan from her. Whistling

AF Ray.........your Mom is on to something, suggesting a New England-style covered bridge (wood) for your train layout.  While these are usually for vehicles (single or double lane) or foot traffic up my way, they look really cool and would look great as a train bridge.  Some of these have survived the eons and were kept intact over the years until floods damaged them or took them out the past couple of years.  Mostly they were repaired or replicated and these projects made the local news up here.. Thumbs Up

Charlie and SJ........thank you so much for yet another stellar SPF video.Thumbs Up  I always get to wondering how the little ones don’t cause derailments with their proximity to the outside-running loop. Surprise

FIFE........  "grandtoddler today.”  Sounds like a trip with the little one to the train shop for a present is in order.  Train presents don't spoil them.  Thumbs UpWink

Chief........I read about your aches and pains with your new exercise regimen.  What I don’t understand is why you did not consult with Chuck on these matters.  For some reason, he never mentioned pain and kept eagerly going back for more.  Even shared pictures with us. Whistling

Later, gang.

Rock, good solution to the smoking in the ole WC    i am a smoker, but I also understand and respect that it offend alot of people. I don't even smoke in my house, well, I'll confess, when its this dang cold, I'll pop one off in the basement with the door to the wood stove open (smoke goes right up the chiminey)

Kev, those are beautiful birds.  I could sit and watch birds all day.  reminds me I got bird feeder duty tonight..

the business across from my scrap yard HAD one of those bird feeders you stick on the window, but he took it down, and gave me an earfull because my furocious killing machine of a junk yard cat ate all the birds that came to feed there.   Funny thing though, when I bought this yard, there was a huge neighborhood RAT problem,  So I brought in the cats and he (the guy across the street) has yet to thank me for cleaning up the RAT issues.

looking like a cold slow afternoon here. people just don't come out in this cold.

Ryan

Ryan, I appreciate your kind of consideration for others.  I smoked for many years but alway tried to consider others too.  Since I quit and BTW now have COPD thanks to my smoking, avoid second hand smoke as much as possible.  The occasion that bothers me most is at a restaurant near me.  They have an outdoor smoking section which is fine but it is only separated from the entrance way by a glass partiion that only goes up a few feet.  The smoke just naturally drifts right over that wall and you have to run a gauntlett just to get in the place.  I'm surprised that they are getting away with it since the California laws are so strict about no smoking in public places.  I just hold my breath when I walk by.  Have not said anything to the manager yet but maybe they could move one row of outdoor tables over a little instead of right up against the walkway to the entrance.

Jack and Rich, that warehouse fire has the neighborhood covered in ice. It's still smoldering because of the cold, and is being watched. Isn't that something, how hard it is go put out.

Brutus, I'm thrilled you found a provider of Hornby keys! Who is it?

RI Jack yes the kids do reach out and touch now and then. There are usually enough of us watching the trains that no damage has been done by them, So Far.. Most times they just cause derailments.

No jack it wasn't that I guarantee you ( will send you an email and you'll see what happened and why couldn't put on here) Speaking of our chat I thought the chief was long winded he don't hold a candle to Jack Laugh we talked over an hour all on a simple call to tell him of an engine for sale.

Well all is back to normal I guess off tomorrow work 4 days then off for 6 in a row Yes Will give me time to work on my layout some. If I want 36" curves ( O-72) I'm thinking I need to make a 34" radius template and for my O-63 it will be like 30"

As told it will flex back some even if it don't' that will be a good size I think either way. thinking of that I have to get new jigsaw blades broke my last one not long ago but guess I could use my saw-saw as I have plenty of blades and all I'm cutting is plywood (23/32)

A toasty 12F here in Central New Jersey.....

The more youse giz talk about your "better half" the happier I am to know the single life....Laugh

The Princess called me last night (ok, this MORNING) at 2 AM, crying, to inform me that she had texted, via Facebook, one of my ex's (who BTW is MARRIED) that she should leave her husband and get together with me, that I deserved better than my ex-wife and the two of us would be happy.....OMG!!!!

Well, long story short, I talked her down, found out that this wasn't for public consumption (thank you, Lord) and explained to her we are very good friends (yes her husband knows) and that if something happens, well, you never know.  I spoke to my ex and we had a good chuckle over it.  She is very sweet and is raising a step daughter.  My Princess....gotta love her....she does love her Dad, and that is the greatest gift I could ask for.

Ryan....trust me, you can find something....which it occurs to me, before I left Florida, I had a layout visit to someone who contracts and builds railroads.  He had a specially built 6 car garage and on the 2nd floor, was in the process of building an S gauge railroad.  HUGE!!!!  Had living quarters, small kitchen and bathroom on the first floor and wide open spaces on the 2nd.  The master control panel was unbelievable.  The lighting went from dawn to dusk, had subways, a circus, switching yard.....all Gilbert and American Flyer...it was...amazing...

I'm off to drill tonight, if I go at all.  I'm feeling like I need to go to bed early, but we shall see.  Off to dinner!

Good afternoon all,

First time getting on today.  Slept in a llittle and then went to work on the railroad.  Just got the mail, no bills Big Smile which is always nice and the March issue of CTT.  Haven't really looked at it, but did notice on the front cover that in the Weekend Workshop they offer tips for MTH signals.  Would have liked to have read that before I installed several last week.

Well got the word today that my Lionel EM-1 that I took in for repair (aux. smoke went out) is back from Lionel.  So, I guess I'm going to take a road trip to St. Louis to pick it up.  It will give me an opportunity to look at Lionel's new ZW-L transformer as well.  I believe it would be much better for my TMCC/Legacy locomotives than the old ZW's that I am currently using.  Now, how best to explain this to my loving and always supportive wife. Hmm

Hey Kev, I saw yesterday you posted a picture of a woodpecker.  I think it is a Pileated woodpecker!  I like watching birds as well.  I'm envious.  I see Red Bellied and Downy woodpeckers around here, howerer, have never seen a Pileated woodpecker except in photos.

Gee Chief, are you sure that all that exercise is really doing you some good?  I mean I understand the motivation Whistling .  You probably should just not try so hard to keep up with them!  Wink

Take care guys.  Won't probably be back until I return from St. Louis.  Bo  Smile

Jeffrey, you know I think you may have something there with the "and burn the house down" Idea

She would certainly understand my disappointment if one of the ZW's burnt up a locomotive Sad, but mention the house and that will get her attention.  I mean, I could end my part of the conversation with, "Yes, I think "we" need to buy the new transformer not only for the railroad but for the sake of our home and family!" Big Smile

It could work.  I can hear her now "Yes, Bo, you make sure you get that new transformer tomorrow!  Please don't come home without one".  Thanks Jeffrey!  Bow

Good evening all,

It was cloudy and cold in SE Indiana with temps in the teens again.  Off work tomorrow to deal with matters on that which I cannot talk about.  Long day ahead, but a train show on Saturday.  Since I am off tomorrow, I had to balance and close for the month today.  Not fun and very stressful, but was done with that by noon so not too bad.  One thing that made the day tolerable was that I got to play soccer last night indoors with the high school kids.  That was fun.  Scored a goal, which is always nice.  Rolex 24 Hours is this weekend.  First major race of the season.  TBIL after Glee and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Evening guys.

I just sat the wife down and put it all out on the table for pre approval.   apparently, she missed the discussion on what the cost was last night.  so we got that part straightened out she says "why so much?"

So I went on to explain the plan, (I could tell she was less than impressed) And in the beginning I was as honest as possible to keep the discussion focused.   Less than impressed she says "I'll foot xx of the cost, your on your own for the rest, and don't let it drag out for years, either do it and be done or just build my little garage for my car and be done."

Fair enough.   I'll get all the building permits in line this winter and hope to break ground end of March weather permitting.

Ohhhhh   sooo, she seemed more concerned about the layout I started in  the basement.   so i explained how it was screwed together, and there would be little or no waste in relocating it.    so she was ok  with that. So then she says what are you going to do with the basement, and I explained I was going to expand my electronics lab ,  she replies, I'm afraid your catch the house on fire with that stuff down there (I don't know where she comes up with this stuff) and then says I should move all my electronics experiments out to the future garage work shop.......

BINGO!!  actual dimensions justified!!

I don't really want to get into the true size of this thing on here unless y'all really want to know.   I will say its gonna be BIG!   but it may be years until the loft area is ready to see trains, so I'll keep tinkering on the current layout for now...

can't remember the last time I was this excited,  You know how it is the older ya get the less things excite you!!

Off to bed.  Tired.  Early rise again for Town retreat. BURRR  Trying to hold back the Yankee raid of frozen stuff.

RT, Jack can talk the eye lashes off of a mosquito. Surprise

Sleep tight.

PS: interesting TV news story on lake levels.

Came from Pat up stream.  That is a lot of water as Kerr Lake is 850 miles of shoreline.

jeffrey-wimberly

sir james I
I have had more than enough of this cold spell. Yes we stayed in today so no big train news.

If you like mild winters you might think about relocating here. The summers might be a bit hard to take though.

After laying on the garage floor changing oil today with the outside temp being 25, my bags are almost packed.Wink

Jack,

I was going to connect Mike's Christine observation with your Boysenberry observation, but somehow I don't think I should post that.Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh

Looks like it's time for me to call it a night.

Low of 58 tonight, mostly cloudy with patchy fog after midnight.

See y'all tomorrow

13 this morning on the way into work.  Possible 'winter mix' falling out of the sky tonight.

RI52 - my problem with delegation is that I don't have people reporting to me.

The LHS owner called by wife today. Told her that he got some pre-war Lionel stuff in that we need to come in and look at.  Something to do this weekend to look forward to.

All for now.

Ryan - Good job!  It sounds like you have a plan.  No not just a plan, but an approved plan!  Congratulations!

I mentioned the ZW-L transformer to the wife at dinner while we were having chili.  And, speaking of chili, I could sense things were beginning to turn just a little chilly.  But, I didn't panic.  I figured though it was time to bring out the big gun.   Sooo, I mentioned how this new improved transformer would not only be good for my locomotives, but more importantly, how it would be a good move safety-wise.  What do you think she said?  "I thought that was why you bought the...

the fire extinguisher for the train room  last weekend."   Indifferent

It's ok fellas, I kept my composure and by the time we were finished I had the Thumbs Up.  It's all good!

The wife is a good sport!Smile

Good night guys.  Going to get an early start in the morning!  Have a good Friday!  Bo  Smile

Thoughts are still with you, Jeffrey.

Doug - I'll email you the link.  They are pricey, just FYI.  I hope it is worth it - right now it's not, lol!

Disney submarine car showed up today and it's in great shape, but the rubber band is broken of course.  The rubber disintegrated on the first turn Laugh

Loooooong day at work today.  I'm sure glad that tomorrow is Friday!  We are supposed to get some freezing rain/sleet late tonight and tomorrow morning, so there might not be school.  We'll find out in the morning.  If so, I might take off too Smile

TARDIS is ready - TTFN!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
