Good afternoon guys,

Ran to Menards for some glue and came home not only with the glue, but also a Woodland Scenics "Menards Cycle Shop building".  They still had a few left they had put on sale.

That is one cool building Bo. I looked to see if they had any left on Saturday when I went to the Menards in Morris but they were all put away and they had all kinds of spring stuff out. What did you give it for? Last i saw they were $69.00 Next time I go I may look upstairs where they put the out of season stuff.

Waiting for paint to dry and unpacked the Alaska Ore cars.

WR, light bulbs work wonders.  There are things at Lowes called thermostats that are yellow in color.  They come on when the temp drops below 40 [I think] and then go back off when it rises above that.  You can plug a drop cord into it [or it can be plugged into an outlet] and then a "trouble light" plugs into it.  I went up to the lake house and set these up this weekend.  I have several of these under the house as a safety in case the heat would malfunction.  I also have some under my Ranger bass boat cover inside the storage building.  Two light bulbs will keep everything in the boat from freezing under normal NC/southern VA winter temps.  They are real neat.

I got a few up here as well. They come in very handy.

Any argument carried far enough will end up in Semantics--Hartz's law of rhetoric Emerald. Leemer and Southern The route of the Sceptre Express Barry

I just started my blog site...more stuff to come...

Test ran my Proto 2000 SW9/1200 this morning and found that the front wheels weren't turning. A quick tear down revealed that the end of the drive shaft was stripped so the flywheel was just spinning on the shaft. Well I have no use for the switcher anyway so now I have some parts for another project.

All,

Thanks for the welcome.  It's good to be back, and I probably wouldn't be back if it wasn't for RT calling Saturday afternoon.Smile  Really put things in perspective in a lot of ways. Thanks RT.Thumbs Up  Just another reminder of how great the group is.

Jake,

Take the homework seriously, but don't forget to enjoy your senior year.  It'll be over before you know it, then it's too late.  I was so focused on college when I was in your shoes eight years ago that I missed out on some opportunities.

Jeffrey,

Try some blue threadlocker on the flywheel/shaft.  I've gotten things stuck with blue threadlocker, and it's strength suprised me.

Depending on how things go Thursday morning, I am hoping to go 5.0 shopping.  Anyone ever trade in a car that they owed money on?

That's a good idea and it would work if the shaft came straight out of the flywheel. However it comes out at an angle.

Good Afternoon, 20 degrees at the Jersey,

Busy day today. First took Mack and Chester for the morning walk. We had a dusring of snow and it was 16 degrees. Then I took mom for her treatments. My son went with me for since I was going to take Mom to New Brunswick and then home since we were up that way we would got to a landscapers trade show in Edison. It was good. Funny, John Deere was not represented. Home now and Antique Truck Club later.

Ryan, glad the business was busy. As to the colors, don't rush her or if it is the wrong color it will be your fault.

Kev: I like the idea of 2 bridges.

Redfire: Glad to have you back. Good luck with the 5.0 shopping. I never traded in a car that I owed on.

Submmbob, Bob, I keep teasing Ray that he needs a Diseasel. (From an old episode from Thomas)

Chief: Thank You. Very well put. Also thanks for the light bulb tip. I would just use 100 watt bulbs but the automatic ones are more efficient. BOC, thanks for the confirmation on how well it works.

SPMan, Ray, Prayers for your Friend and his Wife.

Jeffrey, Continued Prayers.

Have a Great Night!

Rock, the problem is , I forgot, and the pipes are all ready froze, I am having a heck of a time with it.

Kev, I must admit, as dumb as it sounds, I eat ALOT of ice cream in the winter time

Redfire, glad to see you, always enjoy your American Flyer Knowledge

Jeff, take your time with your mothers stuff.   I just hope your family is not as greedy and insane as mine has been when loved ones have passed.  When I went to my grandfather's estate, years ago, to claim what was rightfully left to me (a HUGE American Flyer collection)  the house looked like it was ransacked, and then to make it WORSE, they let my 2 year old nephew play" with the trains while they hauled everything off.  so needless to say, my inherited train collection ended up being a pile a broken crap.  No respect.

any way

does any one know if its possible to change your screen name?  I see redfire did it or do I need a new account?   WR construction is bussiness long in the past, and I'd like my SN to reflect more current things and actvities

Very glad you made the first decision but I am uncertain about the second.  What's wrong with that pristine one you have with all of the beautiful mods you have done?

Yes, a new car dealer will just take in the old car on trade, pay off the loan, and roll the owing balance into the purchase financing of your (new or pre-owned) replacement.  Your bank will pretty much do the same for you if you plan to sell the GT to a private party and do it that way.  With the latter, you may make out better since the dealer will try to get you coming and going. .

I have a better idea.  Why don't you upgrade to a Ford GT?  Thumbs UpWhistling

It's not easy. You can't do it yourself. You'll have to contact the admins about it.

Rock, the problem is , I forgot, and the pipes are all ready froze, I am having a heck of a time with it.

If you want to rip out the section of wall to get to the frozen pipe (you don't), you could use a torch on the pipe to heat it up and melt the blockage (what plumbers do).  Or follow my previous instructions.  You could then wrap the now exposed pipes and put a vented grate in that section of wall when putting the dry wall back up.

Chief's idea is best because all it takes is patience, the heating element he suggested, and a couple of beers hours.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Jeff, take your time with your mothers stuff.   I just hope your family is not as greedy and insane as mine has been when loved ones have passed.

Sadly, it happens in more families than not.....even over absolutely worthless junk!!! Sad

No respect.

Isn't that a capital offense?  It should be.  The executor is responsible for maintaining the security and integrity of all assets in the estate and delivering them to the designated heir(s) exactly as the deceased intended.   Bang Head

Ryan

If you are as hot as I would be over the trains issue, just conjure up the memory of what happened, climb under the sink, and your mere presence should melt the frozen pipes quickly.  Take some beer with you, either to keep you calm or to put out the fire.  WhistlingLaugh

Jack,

I saw a '13 5.0 in Red Candy at a local dealer the other day, and I can't get it out of my head.  I'll probably just keep my '07 and get a newer daily whenever possible.  At 199K on my daily driver, I can't help but get a bit paranoid.  I'd love to have a Ford GT though.Stick out tongue  Too bad Ford priced them out of reach of their target audience.

Ryan,

Send Bob K. (ogaugeoverlord) a PM.  He can get the ball rolling on the screenname change.  I changed old one several years back since I originally used my actual name as my screenname.

Ate well. Sirloin tips with pasta.

Temp to dip to 3 degrees tonight. Windchill of -13 degrees, don't want to be outside right now.

Hello from Frosty Central Jersey....

a BALMY 15F right now, got dusted with snow, the idiots were out in full force this morning.....

JimmyT - welcome back, again. Any left over money owed gets rolled into your new loan and sometimes, it ain't pretty.....(been there.....).

Awaiting the Devils vs Flyers game...home opener in Jersey.  Flyers are 0-2, Devils 1-0....and yes it's early.

This commute is just not right for me, so it looks like I'll be in full job hunting mode again.  I'm spending $40 every 4 days in gas.  Plus I'm exhausted....and that sucks big time.

Off to see the game....Go Devils!!!!

RedfireS197, forgot to mention.

Heading to PennTech this Friday for placement testing. Most likely I won't be able to get on until late in the evening. Just hope I do good. I'm exempt from the reading and writing portions of the test, so I'm feeling pretty good right now.

Jack, the executor is the one who put his grandson up on the 20 by 40 American Flyer Layout to "keep him occupied" while HE stripped the house.  this was 5 years ago and I'm still p!ssed.

any way, gotta love the sound of water running.    Yes I did, in frustration rip the dry wall out under the sink, the, cause its the only portable heater I have,  stuck the salamander under there, I know that thing gets HOT, I actually dont like it, kinda worries me.   well, I managed to melt the trap, the plastic tube to the reverse osmosis facet, and the discharge hose to the dishwasher...  Bang Head    Bang Head

ONLY to find, NOT WHERE THE FREEZE is....    SoapBox

BUT I did find where my mice are coming in at.. just followed to poop trail on the sill plate in the basement, turns out they (the mice) chewed through 4 " of OAK  right between the hot and cold pipes, it felt like a jet stream of artic air coming in there.

The hot air duct was right there so i cut a small hole in it to heat the area, plugged the mouse hole with some copper blocker, and in less than 10 minutes we had water a runnin.

So now I have water at the sink, but no way to drain it.................Sigh

Just another day in my life.....................

Ryan

PS ... she brought up the evil "M" word (moving)  the other day , and I'm telling ya, i'm not too far into this layout to take it back apart

WR, my suggestion is after you get them thawed and to prevent future freezing.  Not to thaw them now.   It would take hours.

Chilly [down right Yankee cold and windy] and warming tomorrow.

Watching TV with Wifey.

Hope to get Box work done tomorrow after workout. [if I can walk tomorrow].

Jimmy T. Glad your back and thanks RT.

Can you post a link to the car?

You know all of my dad's life he wanted to buy at least one new car. He never got to do it, there was always something else that needed that money more.

I have been blessed, at least I think because I have had three. Not much to talk about but they were new. A 1978 Chevy LUV Tongue Tied, a 1986 Chevy S-10 Stick out tongue and a 2001 Dakota special order to my specs, It even said on the window sticker, specially built for Kevin Myers. Yes Smile. A new car is something that everyone should do at least once. Now days I find getting one 11 months old with under 12K is a much better option as far as $$$$$ go. So if you can get a new one, go for it. you have the rest of you life to buy used. Oops,,, Make that Four new cars, I forgot my new 1972 Gremlin X. Oh yeah, that was in the winter of 1971,,,,,,,,things were kind of cloudy back then. Sex, and Drugs, and Rock & Roll. Whistling

Here are the last of the Ore Car purchase, the Alaska cars. Now what am I going to do with 12 more little Walters?? Smile, Wink & Grin How could you go wrong for 12 cars for $152.91 or $12.74 each delivered??

 Have a good evening all.

Ryan -- sadly, I've had more experiences than most with frozen pipes but not at all for the last 6 years, one does get tired of suffering through those issues.  The quick solution is:  a hair dryer set on low (be patient while using) and open cupboard doors if it's in the bathroom or kitchen.  Obviously you want to find out why it's freezing and solve that problem, typically more insulation is needed or holes plugged.

Whether your home is old or new common sense is needed, some newer home builders still lack in common sense construction and just don't get it.  Sadly, when it's -20 with strong winds you will find your home's weakness's quickly, lessons learned the hard way are often the best lessons in life.  Been there done that, and still doing it the hard way but less often Thumbs Up

Good Evening All!

BRRRRRRRRRRR! Cold and staying cold. Temps aren't going to get past mid 20's until snow on Friday.

JoeD - We just got our Yankee schedule in today and game #1 is Opening Day against.......the Saux! Can't wait!

SubBob - Not to worry, I'll stay with steamers for the time being. I like the wheel action and looks of them.

Kev - My mother-in-law wants me to build a covered bridge for my layout and it sound interesting. She spent a few years growing up in New Hampshire and every time we go up there she falls in love with them again. So my vote for you is either two bridges (open or covered).

Good luck guys with the cold.  Snow cannon is missing us.  NO MORE SNOW in forecast.  Well, except the Farmers Almanac calls for one in Feb. and two in March.  Wifey had given her Dad and myself one for every Christmas [my parents use to swear by it for planting].  Suddenly she reads my copy.  Also, temps not too bad as usually they get down into the teens.  Have had them doen to single digits before.

Off to bed.  Sleep tight.

Hello all

Last shift for this week. Still collecting photons. Was an interesting week. Started off w/ the engineers & office types. Then I couldn't sleep that well this week. I ran out of a medication that helps me sleep, plus I'm in a different room than usual w/ all our guests last week. A fellow employee likes to smoke in the bathroom even though he's not supposed to. It's got quite the scent now. Permeates the whole room if you leave the bathroom door open. I've confronted him about it before but he simply denies it and the management doesn't like to deal w/ personnel problems of any kind.  And tonight I got an observer who is somewhat 'particular'. Just a bit burned out. Given my current living situation, it's a bit surprising to say that I'm looking forward to going 'home', but it's true.

Bicycle will not get assembled tonight. Had a tough time getting a decent coat of paint on it. Painting up here can be difficult due to the low temperatures and I imagine the altitude doesn't help. Will just have to wait for a nice warm day back in town.

Redfire - I'd try and resist the temptation. A new car always sounds good until you have to start making the monthly payments. And dealers will always get you on the trade in value. They have to resell the car and want to make a profit, and the more the better.

Kev - I vote for the bridge option too. I'd love to see what you could do w/ the scenery on that one. Maybe a  big sawmill w/ a flume operation or something!

AFRay - I do like my RMT Beep and RDC. They both have enough character to keep them interesting, but I love the look of a steam locomotive and can watch valve gear for hours. Some of my happiest times were working on a living, breathing steam locomotive for the Nevada Northern. And some of my worst have been helped by having my model steam engines around.

So last night I was bored and had this idea of trying to  recreate my first train set (HO) in O-gauge. I gave just about all my HO stuff away 12 years ago to a manager I worked for  so he and his son could work on a layout. On a whim I start looking for what is available. The set was pulled by a little Santa Fe Plymouth switcher. Nothing quite the same color scheme available in O though, and as we discussed above, it's takes a little doing to get me excited about a diesel (unless it's an Alco). So instead I run across (be careful if you're bored and logged into ebay) a fairly smoking deal on a Lionel 0-8-0 w/ air whistle tender and upgraded valve gear new and in the box, in Santa Fe markings. Well you know what happened next. This is the first, new O-gauge steam engine I've ever bought.
