jeffrey-wimberly Earlier today I was doing some work on a Bachmann GP40 shell and just out of curiosity plopped it down on the Stewart/Athearn/Proto AS16 drive I've been playing around with and came up with this smooth running creature. It looks like a Bachmann from the wrong side of the shop but runs smoother and quieter than my newest Atlas. Now what to do with it? This thing is just an experimental accident! It's obviously not an AS16 and it's very obviously not a GP40. What would one call this spawn of the warped mind of Dr Frankendiesel? I'm at a total loss! I look at it and my mind just goes blank.

Doug -- We drove to the final gate this morning on Trail Ridge, stunning beauty today -- full sun and the bluest skies you've ever seen. We are just south of Grand Lake on Lake Granby at a relatives home, they are in AZ, YES! Even though there is snow on the ground it's not nearly enough, way short for this time of year.
We would love to return to SD but it's just not on the horizon right now. Since the boss retired she no longer has an alibi to make that trip twice a year. Would sure like to make the trip to wine country within a year and then just end up in SD. The bucket list is long and the clock is running. Our major trip next summer will be up through the Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier National Park and coming back through the Black Hills ... what a road trip it's going to be Half the fun is the planning!

Just south of Granby/Winter Park is/was a little town called Tabernash and they had a great tubing hill. We used to go play there a couple times a month to kind of fight the dreaded "Cabin Fever". One time it got so bad we drove over to Steamboat Springs from Grand Lake for a bucket of KFC. .
When you go to Yellowstone be sure to take some cold weather gear with you. We were there in mid July some time back and when we crawled out of the camper one morning there was a nice little blanket of snow on the ground.

Weather looks good for today again. However, it looks like there might be a little bit of freezing rain tomorrow afternoon. May do some looking around of eBay when I get home for some N scale freight car kits and see what there is.
Good morning. It's 61° with 100% humidity. A flood warning is in effect. Showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rain are likely. The high will be 72°.Quack, quack, quack! It's getting decidedly wet here. There's no danger of flooding on my hilltop here but the local lakes and waterways are rising at an alarming rate. Roads in this area are still open though that could change at any time. I still have the thing I created yesterday sitting on the layout. It's a Stewart AS16 frame, Athearn motor/flywheels, Proto 2000 AAR trucks, Athearn/Proto hybrid shafts, Bachmann GP40 body and Bachmann decoder all fitted together and sitting there looking like it's been there a hundred years and I still don't have a name for the thing.No plans for today. The weather is too dicey to get committed to any one project at this time.

Wife and I received an email last night from the Corporate Sales Manager of the furniture company with whom we've been going round and round over our unfilled order placed nearly 8 weeks ago. The coward did not call!
After months of my wife searching high and low for exactly what she wanted, for her Christmas present from me, we had ordered an entertainment center, payment required when order is placed. "The particular console (bottom piece) and the hutch (top) (in the wood/color my wife wanted) has has been discontinued with none in stock."
Wife was very disappointed (understatement) but half-heartedly and wearily managed to start her furniture search on the net all over again while I sat next to her all lit up. Women sometimes get their heads back into the game very quickly while the men start dark and evil plotting over what happened. When the going gets tough the women go shopping.
We do have a viable alternative that will cost us $300 more for the exact same style of entertainment center AND we lose the "free delivery and inside the house 'white glove installation'......buy the exact same pieces but both in a solid cherry finish/color. Women are very particular about furniture because they are creating their detailed vision (a home) for the present and the future while the men look at the functionality (a house), whether it goes with the women's vision or not.
Wife looked at me with those sad puppy dog disappointed eyes and said, half questioning and half stating, "too much money." Without skipping a beat, I said firmly "This was and is your Christmas present. I'll call back that knucklehead woman and see what I can do about getting the free delivery and installation thrown in, just as before."
By the way, someone asked if the furniture manufacturer in question was located in a Northern state or a Southern state. Arkansas = S.
In conclusion, somehow I will to turn this debacle into a positive. Maybe I can be get away with spending way too much on that postwar 726/736 BERK I have been talking about. With that 2426W 12 wheel tender too.

Jon, In 1983 I rode my Triumph Trident out on I 90 to the Bad Lands, and Rt 14 through Cody to Yellowstone, the Tetons, Jackson Hole, and coming back through Co. to home on back roads that run along I 80. It was in July and it does get cold at night in Yellowstone. I had to get a sheep skin to put on my bike seat in Cody for my poor Buttox. The Trident ain't the best ride. I sure could not make that ride today. Great country out there but a hard ride.
On the train front: I ordered 10 mini fuse holders to install in front of my small 22 gauge accessory and switch trigger wires on the layout. I don't need that many because I will just put them in the feed lines to the buss bars but they were cheap so I will have extras for the addition.

Got the wife's car worked on yesterday. Today I'm going to work on the railroad. Getting ready to go down to the tain room to install my PRR 7-Light signal bridges. I'm going to use relays for train detection. This type of work is not my particular forte, but I believe it should go well.

I know I'll have to ship him at least a few books he ordered too late - but he'll be paying for shipping. Have to take the van in tomorrow, got a look at the front disc brakes and they are pretty pitted - can't fix that myself unfortunately. Looks like the bride's new Kindle Fire is on the blink too. He was totally shocked when I got pre-purchase repairs done by the dealer on his prospevctive car without a price change (below blue book) and then his financing from the same dealer, with no co-signing (he had inadequate credit history) at the tail end of the deal. We had fun together on that one.

I am also pleased with the car. It has low miles at 48k and is the twin of my wife's car only diffrence is Sandra's leather is tan and Katie's is black. Sandra's is a Pontiac skin and Katie's is a Chevy skin. The Torrent and Equinox are the same car otherwise.
Both have AWD with the optional sport package and the 265HP 3.6 V6 that will do 0 to 60 in 6.3 sec. They run like a go-kart on steroids. Their down side is road noise is a bit high and tire thump from the 18" wheels with short sidewalls on the tires.
Both have the DVD player for the kids in the rear, leather, heated seats,power everything, remote start, all of the safety air bags, yada yada yada, Katie's also had the bodyguard rust shielding done to it.
What I liked most on the car Katie got is it really was driven by a little old lady. The story was that they got the car from the woman's husband after she passed away. The story checked out. She had never even set the channels on the radio and the best part,,,every oil change and all of the work receipts are in the glove box and all done by the dealer she got it from right down the street from where Katie lives in Joliet. The tires are the originals and they look like new. The back seat looks to have never been sat in and the DVD player had never been used. I think she did good.
She told me she was proud of herself by getting into a house, getting into the medical code billing job she had wanted to do and getting her first car on her own all within a year. Well. I am proud of her too.

Got my new passenger car truck from MTH yesterday. Looks like it will be a good replacement for the old one. Haven't checked it out yet. Still waiting for call back on new spring for my MTH class J engine.
Been watching "Moonshiners" on TV. Some of these guys are a trip. I get a kick out of the Jim Tom character with no teeth. He has some but won't wear them. I wonder if making liquor is an automatic prison term. I doubt it. Otherwise, why would these guys take such a big chance. Listening to some of these guys talk requires an interpreter, even for a Southener.
Went out to a Mexican place last night for dinner with friends. Worst chille rellenos I ever had. The green chille inside it was not cooked enough and it looked like the blackened skin on the pepper from firing had not been peeled off.
Heard they are having a memorial service for local celeb, Huel Howser next Wednesday I think at the Griffith Observatory which was one of the places he featured on his program
Rained hard here early this morning for about 30 minutes then quit. Forcast calls for cold nights next few with temps below freezing for a couple of nights and highs in the 50's. This must be our winter. An older couple we know have sold their house in California and are moving back to Iowa soon. He is 92 and she is in her 80's I would guess. Both of them are prone to falling and have had several mishaps, the latest being a broken rib for the guy in his last fall. Don't know why in the heck they want to go back where they have ice and snow sometimes. He is from Iowa and they had maintained homes in both places. She is from California. Go figure!

KEV.......hopefully she is as proud of herself as you are of her. She should be. And she should stop and smell the roses, reflect on what she has accomplished despite some not-so-small obstacles along the way. I particularly like the part where she uses her resources, gets her old man (you) into the act to avoid some of the mud puddles. That is using her noggin!!!!
BTW.........that 0-60 time @6.3 seconds of her Equinox is as quick as my SRX would be if it didn't have the extra weight of AWD!!!! And my SRX has the 4.6L Northstar V8 (320HP and 315 lb. ft. of torque).
PS: If you truly loved her, you would buy her a GM warranty extension.
Afternoon fellasWell yesterday was long, longer, and even longer than I expected. Up at 2am, at the airport by 5am, on the plane by 5:45am and in the air to FL by 6:15am. Christina was awesome as she slept the entire flight. Took us 45 minutes to walk from the gate to baggage claim to the rental car center at Miami International (I flew into that airport twice yesterday - first and last) got a 2013 Chrysler 200 Limited with 900 miles... for an American car it wasn't bad... if I get my truck in a couple years I may cheap out the everydayer and get a 200, if no truck then it is looking more and more like an X3. Anyhow... met the lawyer at her office to go over a few things, then met the birthmother for lunch. She used to sell cellphones for a living so she brought 3 models for Christina (who was in 7th heaven since she could talk on two at once). Very nice young lady who just found herself in a tight spot. Really loves her unborn son and it showed in how she spoke of him.I won't go into specifics because I don't want to speak ill about Christina's birth family.Flight home reinforced why I do NOT want to fly down for the birth and then fly home... one toddler is enough, can't imagine flying with a toddler AND a new born! I'm sure it was more traumatic for me than Christina or the other passengers, but I really don't want to go through that again. Really hope we can rent a car for the trip...Now just have to get the house ready for Mathew Brent.
