It is cloudy in SE Indiana.  Don B, good description of the new job!  Hope you continue to enjoy it.  Roy, glad to hear you made it thru the storms ok.  Jeffrey, continued prayers for you and your family.  Good stories from all of you involved in adoptions.  Chief, great landscaping.   RI52, as always, I appreciate your general summaries and thoughts on the pot.  Thank you all for the continued support.   All quiet on the Lucas front although his laptop died and we are scrambling to get that fixed.  That is much easier to take care.  I finished the federal taxes last night and will do the state ones tonight.  Very quiet day at work today.  First major test at IMS for new DW12 Indycar yesterday.  Speeds were unspectacular to say the least.  I had the regular fare on the dining this morning.  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Morning all.  Cloudy and warm.  Showers around.  Taking it slow this AM.  Getting up all documents and outlining taxes for CPA.  Box work tomorrow.  May be rainy so will depend on that on what gets done.  Do not want to haul flooring and ceiling in the rain.

Email from Church.  Wonderful couple here who the husband monitors this forum.  He is a collector.  Wife has been diagnosed with liver cancer.  Keep her in our prayers.

Banks, hope Dad is better with the plus of you being able to make York.  Its great.  The trains thingy is great but getting to visit the "gang" is the best.

Bob.........is this your new yatchet?  The color is a bit drab for my tastes.  It looks a tad larger than Fife's, must be tough launching it into the water at Springtime and then hauling it back out in the Fall.  Winter storage must be problematic as well, needs lots of space and shrinkwrap.  Must also be a slight challenge trailering it through the neighborhoods and through the underpasses.  It must take a bit longer to get her ship shape between seasons too, especially with that slightly larger hull and all of the teak decking you have to strip and refinish. 

But at least you don't have to worry about pirates, bad weather, drunk boaters.......or even an overzealous coast guard.   PirateWhistling

Hope Bank’s Dad, and Jeffrey’s Mom are doing better, and Lucas’ situation continues to improve.  Also, admiration out for all you folks going thru or gone thru the adoption process!

 

Talked with the Chief a little yesterday, believe ME from what I was hearing you don’t want to be around when he is checking out electrical!  It sounded more like a circuit breaker safety test going on, then anything else.  Kept hearing sounds like “Hey there is only one wire here”, (Chief) “No problem just grab some of those others we didn’t know what they are for, and see if anything happens”.  Then an occasional “I keep getting these shivers going thru my hand and arm”.  (Chief would respond.)  I can call Grady over and he can help us test the wires, he’s not busy.

 

Sounds like SPAM central control has moved to Northern Illinois, I refuse to buy Spam anymore just has to many viruses.

 

DAY TWO – (will only do this a couple more days, could get boring to you all).

Started the day out in the C-19, doing the Fireman duties.  Things seemed to come together a lot.  Actually found out the correlation between the Blower and Atomizer gauges, understanding more of the boiler pressure and how to maintain better consistency in the pressure.  Realized how MUCH variance there is depending upon who the Engineer is, and his operating technique.  Some of the guys are very steady, which makes my job a lot easier.  A couple are all over the place, and I am continually trying to adjust.  But that is the name of the game, and I know there will be a lot of hazing going on as well.  Example, I’m ringing the bell, and all of a sudden it locks up.  (Did I cause it? Getting it bound up at TDC, (top dead center), or is the cord binding?  Turns out trainer and engineer where restricting movement.)  Few other situations were thrown at me, but seems I managed OK, didn’t get yelled at.

Did learn a lot as the day progressed, Blow Downs are definitely a LOT easier on the trains at home!  Just hold that button down.  (There IS a button on the remote guys, need to practice using it.  Also the Xing whistle is a lot easier on the remote too.)

The biggest incident that occurred was during Steam and Water Injecting (more buttons on the remote).  The left side water valve stuck open, so trainer had to shut line off from tender and use right side only.  Thought at first I may have caused it by not turning the valve a ¼ turn back after opening it, letting the stem of the valve get to hot from the steam pressure.  But, I was told no that it happens every 3 or 4 months or so.

Running after dark is totally different, of course limited light, and a steam electrical generator is brought on line, which pulls a LOT of my pressure away.  While this is going on I need to keep the Boiler pressure up, while start to get the engine prepped for daily shutdown.  Meaning building up the water levels so as the engine sets overnight it cools down slowly.  (Sight glass 70% full.)  Another BIG difference is watching the stack for smoke, trying to keep the stack at the “hazing” level.  At night the stack looked like it was all steam coming out, (white), didn’t see any black.  A couple minutes later the trainer asked me to turn around and look at the top of the depot.  I had completely filled up the Calico Area with black smoke!  (Primary center point for the entire park.)

Doing the Blow Down, (hourly) is a lot of work!  Up and down off that engine 5 or 6 times.  I can’t believe how busy it is up there, I’m sure it will improve as I learn more.

 

Then went over to Little Toot, after 1 ride along.  We switched and I was going to drive!  First loop around didn’t do too bad, only caused the wheels to slip about 3 times.  Second, time around no driver slipping.  But, I practically blew us out of the cab with the whistle.  Third time, started out slipped the drivers, then stalled the entire train on a slight grade, due to the slippage.  I think I got rattled, and the rest of that circuit was slipping half the time.  At the end realized what I was doing, simply being to impatient.  Takes the engine 1.5 to 3 seconds to respond to what I am telling it, and I’m over correcting.  The throttle is extremely sensitive, so with time, should improve. 

 

Overall, day 2 was successful, they havn’t thrown me out!

 

When I get home… Man I’m beat, drag my self into the house and within no time down for the count.

Don, thanks for the day two report.  Sounds like you are taking too it well and learning a lot.  Interesting that you report the job varies in difficulty depending on who the engineer is.  I have heard this many times before from old heads on the railroad.  I heard one guy say that the hoghead (engineer) would deliberately screw up the fire if he didn't like the fireman.  I heard a fireman say that the engineer couldn't stand to see him sitting on the seat box not doing anything, when in reality he was just taking a breather between chores so he would do something to the engine to make the fireman go back to work.  Funny trick they played on you with the bell.  Hope nothing worse.

 

Dennis, those caps with the polka dots were made by the Kromer cap company which was the real authentic brand that the railroaders bought.  I belive that the company was started by an engineer with the same name.  I doubt if they are still around today.  I bought mine in 1979 and they only had about one place in L.A. that still had them then.

Ray,

Regarding the previous question on water.  On the C-19 the engineer has been refilling the tender, don't know if that will change.  On Little Toot, I refilled twice yesterday.  Did add chemicals, 3 eye dropper of some liquid to reduce oxidation, and about a 1/4 cup of another liquid that lines the inside of the tank to prevent metalic build up.  Told a gallon of the liquid runs over $700, DON'T SPILL IT!!

Using Knotts standard cap now, going to get Denver Rio Grande cap at Fullerton Railfest next month.  That road name is authorized.

Work today and Easter Sunday Sad, next week Tues thru Fri..  Spring Break should then be over and park goes to a shorter schedule due to attendance.  I think the Goose will be back in operation for a few weeks, before it is moved to Colorado for "Goose Fest".

How is the bridge and lift out working?

  We use the same stuff up at the PIONEER TUNNEL in the saddle tank.  We put about a baby food jars worth in the water tank.  It treats abot875 gallons have to do it daily at the end of day.  Looks like anti freeze the green stuff.

Evening all not a lot going on today well kinda but first RB sorry haven't really posted in a couple of days but saw everyone saying prayers for your mom but I missed what. Will send prayers up tonight for her fast recovery and healing.

Now with me I went to get my defibrillator checked today and when it was done The tech said the new senion Dr. wanted to meet me. I told him of a problem I been having and even whet to ER a couple of times about it over the last 3 or 4 years and they never could find anything. I get a pain in my chest that goes right thru to my back and my rt for arm and hand feel numb. well got his attention he said you have this problem again you tell them you want cardiology contacted. He also is setting me up with cardiologist asap and wants me to have a stress test I had this episodede again just before meeting him and informed him of same. we had a little meeting of him and 2 of the tech/nurses right in his office he did tell me my defib is working fine and theres no problems with it. Off tomorrow so will rest.

Won some NYC boxcars on ebay the other day one is a Williams Crown eddition 7 where Industrial Rail but the price was great on them allWink . May or may not sell some of the Industrial Rail ones but there an okay size for behind my NYC GP-9's But all the Industrial Rail have the same numberSad.

Good evening everyone.  Quick stop over before heading to bed.  Adventurous day in that we took our daughter to get four teeth removed.  They were her baby teeth and they were preventing the adult teeth from coming down.  All went well.

Now watching "Inside the Killbox" on the first gulf war...very interesting.  Asked my wife if she had stayed up all night back in January, 1991 to watch the beginning of the war?  Like me, she did.  I remember CNN with the video of their guys in Bagdad and the AAA fire from the roof tops.  On this show, they had video from inside the cockpit of a FA111 with all that AAA.  Man, those guys flying through all that.

Bob, that is a great tease.  Isn't the Iowa the longest of the battleships?  If I recall, they lengthened the bow after it was damaged.

Don, sounds like you are having quite a time with that new job.  Keep a journal to keep the memories of all the fun.

Went to Mass this evening and checking in on the way to bed.

Thanks for the prayers guys. Dads follow up went well. Doc says his lungs sound good. Earlier this week Cardiologist said his heart is good. While disconnected from O2 his level fell to 86. Not good. Doc said stay on O2 and come back April 30. He's not happy he's still on leash but he looks better than he has in months

As long as there is no back set York is still a go. I've been following the York Office Thread and hope to join you.

Off tomorrow. Much I want to do but limited time. Good Friday service at noon and the last Seafood buffet by 3;30. If we hit 647 the average for the year will be 700. Never know about Good Friday. Some years it's Big and sometimes not.

Off to join Mrs in bed.

Happy Easter if I don't make it back

Proper April weather today.  Low 60's and cloudy/rainy.

Filled the Cobalt SS up yesterday.  1st time it took more than $40.  Of course, I filled it with preimum grade.  'Had' to use premium because weather is getting warmer, which means I'll 'need' to use the supercharger more often Big Smile.

Today got around pickup problem with Atlas U30M-R-EM-645, hmmm, shorten that U30EM645. Did hardwire mu consist with Atlas H24-66. U30 has now eightteen maybe twenty wheel pickup. Both perfect match run well together. Bachmann motor control. DCC address 201, H24-66 cab#. Running three decoders on this. U30EM645 Bmann motor control. H24-66 Bmann motor control Digitrax light control. Digitrax has spinoddle popped motor circuit working lights only MARS front, 2 strobe rear.

It's been a busy couple of days at work and with school.  I am caught up for the moment.  I've still had time to have fun with the kids.  We've played some whiffle ball, ran trains, and had some nice long walks/bike rides around base.  The weather has been odd: it will be warm in the morning and then around 1400 it will start getting cold.  It's been that way the past three days or so.  We had an office picnic today so I left work early.  We don't have any plans for this evening.

Dennis - I remember watching the first Gulf War on television.  I was in 11th grade and knew I was going to be in the military one day, but I had no idea I would find myself in Iraq just over a decade later.

I'm praying for all of us in need, especially for those who are ill or have loved ones and friends suffering.

Woke up with a headache but the cloud in my head is gone. To give some perspective so you can understand, my aphasia started in 1962 after a bout with meningitis caused significant damage to parts of the brain. My speech and hearing were both significantly effected. My hearing was and still is scrambled. That's never changed. The issues affecting my speech and writing lasted until 1977 then just went away for twenty-three years. In 1984 the speech and writing problems returned for a short period then just vanished again. In 2000 another recurrence that lasted a week. Seven years in the clear then another short recurrence then five more years in the clear. That brings us to 2012 when as you know another recurrence took place. It may be over, I don't know. I hope it is. You have no idea what kind of hell this is. I don't mind telling about this because it's in my records available for anyone to see.

Now, plans for today include working on the SD27J. It still needs two air tanks and there's a part right behind the cab that's missing. I'll have to scratch-build that too. Front handrails are gone, nothing I can do about that. I also need to replace the couplers on the U30EM645. It has those plastic knuckle things that are good for nothing but causing nightmares, uncouplings and derailments!

Dennis I was in the first gulf war. I was on the U.S.S. Wisconsin BB-64 Thats the ship the newspapers said fired the first tomahawk missile ( it actually wasn't but was the pic they got and the pic that got printed in just about every newspaper around the world)

Morning all. feeling better today. Still a day of rest. Not to much going on yet need to make some breakfast and see how the day plays out.
