I agree with you all ( Laz, Fife, Brutus ect) Our service personnel, Fire fighters, Police officers, Teachers all don't get the respect that is due to them.

I think a few others should be added to that list.... Farmers, Machinists, Truck Drivers, Bus Drivers, Shop Keepers, Assembly workers, Tax Payers.

In other words It keeps passin down the line, I'm not aware of a "special group".My 2 Cents    SoapBox

Don I agree. theres a lot others also but a lot that really deserve don't get it. and theres more to the list who we could be thanking.

I guess my biggest gripe is these that get there tail lights kissed and there against the very thing that Protected them so they can have the right to protest.

Only person that needs to recognize the work I do is my boss, IMHO at least.

And that is all I am sayin' 'about that.

Got down into the train room today. Have decided to redo the track around the town. Going to mean alot of work, but in the long run it will be worth it. I'll be able to shift the second level in that area back about 2 feet which will mean a little more room for the town but a lot more room in the front of the layout, so you'll see more of the lower level track and the hill won't look so out of place. Now to begin construction...

Couldn't sleep so I got SPF started a little early. Whistling

Howdy guys - pretty good day.  Played on xbox for a while, did all the laundry, and then went out to dinner with an old buddy and we went to see Sucker Punch.  I have to say that I liked that movie, but it would not be for everyone.  Lots of great special effects and action scenes, but it was kind of a downer story overall.  Sorry I missed the TARDIS, but I'll catch up with you guys tomorrow - BARK!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Mornin' boys.  Sunny & 37 in the Mid-Atlantic region. S'posed to hit 70 tomorrow.  What-to-do-what-to-do?  Grocery shopping this am, then maybe boatyard in the pm.  Will DVR NASCAR race, and watch as I press my own uniforms tonight.

Probe - Fifepup is having the same problem finding a job locally (including bagging groceries, making a foot-long sandwich, and stocking tools on a shelf).  Everything is fill out an application ON LINE.  Does anyone else see a BIG problem with this way of hiring?

Good Morning Folks,

I just thought I would share the little belated April Fool's joke that Mother Nature is providing for us.  Its 30 out there, heavy wet snow is falling and we have had numerous crashes from thunder snow. Its driving our dogs crazy - they stick very close to one of us when there are boomers going on. Now I know why public radio was playing the Flight of the Valkyrie when the alarm whent off this morning.  The prediction is for this stuff to last into monday.  It gives me a perfect excuse to spend another day with the trains after church today.  I'll have to see what I can come up with for SPF.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Sunny Taxachusetts,

TODAY IS THE DAY.  Current temps in the high 30s, an expected high in my neck of the woods about 50, and there should be NO sign of snow on the ground when the sun goes down.....first time in 99 days!  I declare Winter 2010-2011 officially over in Taxachusetts.  Dog training on tap for noon up in New Hampshire, hope we work outdoors.

Spent a zillion dollars at the grocery store yesterday.  Daughter and son-in-law with the gransdkids arrived for dinner late yesterday afternoon, 30 minutes late...... as usual.  Why don't they just add a fudge factor into their announced ETA?  That way they will be late according to their schedule but not ours?  They will be late for their own funerals, late 99% of the time, no matter what the event.  Had salad, lemon pepper chicken, scala bread, sweet corn, and mashed potatoes with chicken gravy for dinner.  Granddaughter talked me into Dairy Queen for dessert......the place was mobbed.  Cabin fever has one remedy!!!

Will the Red Sox go 0-162 this year?  They are working on it.  Boston fans already in a mental tailspin.  I read where Boston has the third highest price in the MLB for a family of 4 trip to the ballpark.  I think the cost was $330 including the tickets, parking, food and drinks, and a couple of modest souveniers.

It is sad that "America's Pasttime" and a live baseball game has long since become unaffordable for the average Joe.  I used to take my son when he was a little tyke.  Then I went on strike, beginning about 18 years ago.  I stopped going to games, and the last game I took in was actually at Wrigley Field in Chicago to take in a Cubs game.  We were back visiting Family for a few days while on vacation for a family get together (wedding).

It won't be long before I'll be back to listening to baseball games on the radio, just  like it was for me 56 years ago, sitting alongside my grandfather while the Milwaukee Braves played.  Yup, Milwaukee Braves with Warren Spahn, Hank Aaron, Lew Burdette, and Eddie Mathews. You older guys remember that team.  Once the cable networks start charging for baseball, and it is coming, boys, there will be an interesting revenue correction for MLB.  The players won't be walking around with holes in their shoes, but something has to break.  We'll probably see a retraction in the number of teams fielded as well, revenue sharing with the smaller market teams or no.

Later , gang!!!  Have a good one.

Jack

Good Morning from the Jersey Shore,

Beautiful day today. Getting ready to head out to the Greenberg Show in Edison. Too bad I pass the shop on the way. I missed the Tardis ride last night. Fell asleep after taking some Nyquill to help battle this cold/soar throat/cough. I only take it at night.

Everyone, have a great Sunday.

Mornin' Fellas.

My comment wasn't directed at any one in particular. Just bothers me when you hear in the media that some people deserve this or that. They are all about building class envy, which IMHO is the new racism. The poor think the rich should pay for everything, but you never hear anyone 'defined' rich - and in many cases the 'rich' are just anyone that earns more than them. Few people stop to think about the sacrifices other people made to get to where they are. Then there are those that think they are entitled because of their job. I bust my rump for 40 - 50 hours per week and sometimes more, but I don't get overtime, and have done almost two years without a raise, the company stopped 401K matching, and they raised our out-of-pocket cost for benefits and now The Fed and The State want to raise my taxes! If we complain... we're pounding the pavement looking for new employment. Yet others think they are entitled to yearly raises, free healthcare, pensions, and to never be fired - and if their 'compensation' gets messed with they strike, holding the Public hostage - THAT is what I have a problem with. Federal Employees are NOT permitted to strike, so why should State, Local, or Educators be allowed to? There is a job to do, do it. I have known alot of teachers over the years, some are great, but many are just biding their time till they get tenure and once they do they are worthless. But there are employees like that in any industry. I also don't believe that everyone needs to go to college, nor is everyone college material. We used to have apprenticeships, but kids think they should get paid $100/hr to flip burgers! When I was younger my Mother's cousin was telling me they couldn't find kids to catch chickens for $10/hour that was back in the 80s when the minimum wage was $2.37/hour. Why? Because 'The work was too hard'. And don't get me started on those on public assistance!

I would say I am sorry if I offend anyone with the above, but that is how I feel and if you don't like it... tough. We need to learn to grow thicker skin in this country. We've become way too soft as far as character goes.

Hi GUYZ,

39 here going up to 52.  Raked half the yarden up yesterday afternoon,MINNIE supervised off the leash.  E Fence worked good she was out with me for two hrs and had no problems.  Today gonna finish up raking all the sticks in front of house.

PROBE, I feel your pain.  Got my first degree in Criminal Justice and couldn't find a job.  Tried for State Police to test passed but at that time they were taking women and minorities.  Worked construction for 5 yrs.  Saved money went back to school got my Shop (IA) dgree and here I am.  Perserveer and you will find.  Hope you get something in your field.

JACK, I'm with you on the BB front.  I stopped going to games in '95.  We use to plan a baseball trip and hit Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Baltimore evry year and have a blast.  Now you can't even go without bringing the bank.  I still love the game but there is only a few teams that can compete any more.  The rest like my Indians and Pirates are just AAAA for the other teams.  They develop a player only to be traded come July 31.  And this is what they call Americas Pastime.  The rich get all the spoils and the rest are just there for their amusment.

Sorry for the rant.

Stay frosty bouyz,

laz57

Northwoods Flyer

Good Morning Folks,

I just thought I would share the little belated April Fool's joke that Mother Nature is providing for us.  Its 30 out there, heavy wet snow is falling and we have had numerous crashes from thunder snow. Its driving our dogs crazy - they stick very close to one of us when there are boomers going on...... Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Northwoods Flyer

You are not alone, Northwoods.  We have found that repeatedly exposing dogs to loud, varied, and unexpected noises at a very early age mitigates this issue early on.  It works on older dogs as well, but it takes time until they ususally learn to tune the noises out:  they startle but then recover quickly.  It's really a self preservation, protective thing in their genes, a natural reaction.  Fireworks, vacuum cleaners, a whole host of daily noises we ignore can set dogs off.

When dogs get frightened by noises, letting them outdoors off leash is a sure fire way to lose them.....they will run off and hide, may not find their way home.  One of the folks we train with has a Blacc Lab (LAZ' Minnie) who gets set off by something as benign as popping bubble wrap.  That dog is making good progress.

Working dogs  (field, police, protection) are deliberately exposed to loud sharp unexpected noises at a very early age.  They come to  ignore gunshots right next to them, proving that acclimation and desensitizing training can overcome the genes and natural self preservation inclinations.  Our Maximus shows only a passive interest in gunshots, even gunshots indoors and close up, where the report is pretty sharp.  He'll may bark at the rumble of thunder and the crack of lightening occasionally, mostly for amusement I suppose.,,,,,or he thinks he has something important to address.  Outdoors on the Fourth of July he likes to watch the fireworks at night.

Short of training, the best thing you can do is keep your dog safe indoors or secure on a leash outdoors.

Whatever you do, don't try to reassure, soothe, or talk to your dog.  You will only reward the skittish behavior and make it worse, reinforcing the very behavior you are trying to mitigate.  Act calm.  Ignore the noises.  Ignore the dog, no petting.  Turn up the TV.  Give your dog something to do (distraction), like play with them and work in some obedience training during the storm.  Some dogs actually begin to associate the weather racket with things positive.  Also, provide the dog with self access to a room where they feel safer.

We are expecting rain from Doug M sometime this afternoon and into tomorrow morning. Our 3 kids are good at being on time for dinner as they know if granny says 2-0-clock that's when dinner is served. Period. As for guest we would wait but a considerate guest will be on time. 39 degrees this morning at the cabin.  The big melt is on.  Lake is still covered in ice from shore to shore.  Everything looks like a melting snow cone.

49 and going to the mid 50's. Nice!

Boy are we covering alot of topics today? Dogs, work, weather, jobs and baseball! As for jobs and work goes, if my boss is happy than all is good. I've always tried to do a little more than expected and that hasn't hurt me yet.

Jim (Green97Probe) - I know it's been said before but hang in there. BUT, sometimes what WE all are doing now is not what we wanted to do when we started. I have the same story that Laz has. Probably most of us do. You never know.

Jack - My 3 kids and I purchase 12 game package for 3 seats every year. Most of the time it's me and my two daughters that go. We don't get great seats, although they aren't the cheapest seats either.. It's $250 for each seat with taxes and shipping (seats are about $20 per game). We carpool together. Parking is $23, Tolls and the bridge are about $14 round trip and you know what gas is. You can bring in your own sandwiches and an unopened water/juice/gatorade. That's about $50 a game bringing in your food or $600 per year per person. I guess what it all boils down to is where you chose to spend your money.  For us, it's affordable. It's a shame we can't buy the tickets that I did as a child, I can't afford those, not many can. But my kids are used to that and aren't disappointed that we sit in the grandstand. If it was 2 games a year it would be field level seats. Oh well!

I was just talking with John-Hudson#685- who's in Edison at a Greeburg show. He had a great find with a Marx diesel (his first Marx) and crane car. He calls me, I check my price guide, he buys! What a setup!

Later

Aloha from a grey but warm Chicago where I am sending the rain that missed us off to Sir J and points east. Boy, I love listening to baseball game on the radio - I take my teen to a White Sox game for his birthday each year - it's sure expensive, but a good, if rare time...

Afternoon all!

Been out of town and then spent yesterday working hard to get yard cleaned up from winter (leaves blowing into yard), cut grass (so far), and weeds starting to grow. Took all day. Spent this morning cleaning up from the contractor work being done on our daughters bathroom (spripped and repainted woodwork, removed recessed lighting, new countertop with integral sinks. Had spare materials, junked parts, etc. to sort and dispose of. Broke up the old countertop and hauled out front for bulk pickup tomorrow.

Leave for another business trip tomorrow - back on Tuesday night. This excessive travel really starting to wear on me.

High 80's today - wind howling from south.

Grilling some steaks tonight - gotta go clean up the patio - Dinner

Hope everyone has a great day today.

Regards, Roy

Good Evening from the Jersey Shore:

We did great at the Greenberg Show. We picked up a Marx #1998 UP Switcher and a #5590 Crane Car very reasonable. They are running on the layout as I type. We also bought a nice wooden adjustable work craddle, a pair of Lionel lighted bumpers and my son bought a Peterbuilt dump truck to add to his collection. I also found some Pre War Lionel that I almost bought.

88: I definitely agree with you.

Baseball: I prefer to go to the local Minor League Stadium, The Blue Claws at First Energy Park in Lakewood. They have a lot of specials and it is a great family night out.

I will try to make the Tardis tonight. Sundays are tough, my son has homework for his English Class, a blog to be done for Monday and it has to be submitted before 12. He is working at the Ice Cream Shop tonight so he has to do it when he gets home. Face facts, he waits until the last minute every week.

Thoughts and Prayers for all in need,

John

Evenin' fellas and gals:        Sorry to burden you'all with such a sad post. A swell friend of mine has lost his only son to freak accident.  The boy had relocated to Fla. to start a new job as a financial advisor for a national company. He was there only a short time when he fell from a dock and broke his neck. They couldn't find his body until the next morning. He was only thirty one years old. So sad.  Could'nt bring myself to go to the wake; would'nt have been able to take it. Sent a Mass card.  Give your loved ones a hug, be kind to each other.   later.

Think good thoughts, do good deeds!

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI where there is much rejoicing at Butler's win last night.  Did some major retail therapy today as wife and I went to the Springfield, OH meet.  Scored a used 384E Lionel Classics from the late 1980s and some period piece soldiers for a diorama to go with my 8E set.  Wife did some shopping for new, smaller clothes.   Sometimes the Lord works in mysterious ways.  If it had not been for the skin cancer, my wife would not be receiving the treatment she is getting now for high blood sugar.  Her count yesterday was 180, down from a high of 477 at one point.  I am so proud of the effort she is making.  Traindood, sorry to hear of your friend's loss.  Brutus, ditto on Sucker Punch.  The action scenes are fantastic, and there is somewhat of a happy ending although not the one anticipated.  I had hotcakes and sausage from McDonald's for breakfast on the dining car.  TBIL anytime and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Brent,

            Bow Well said.

Laz,

When I was considereing what to go to college for, IA teacher crossed my mind several times.  Seeing the behavior of my classmates throughout IA changed my mind.  Couldn't handle that and still have a job.  The teacher was great, but the same few students were the issue.

Fife,

Too bad you aren't in the area.  The store I work at would probably take on Fifepup.  I just want to move on to bigger and better things myself.

Hi GUYZ,

Busy day here.  Cleaned up all the flower beds and sticks from the trees.  MINNIE watched me.  Took them all to our recycle area and dumped it then took MINNIE on walk at the Ned Smith Consevation Lands.  We did a nice 3.5 miler the last 1.5 we ran.  She is a fast PUP.  It was all I could do to keep up but made it.  Lots o fun and got my run in too.

TRAINDOOD, sorry for the loss prayers for the family.

PROBE, you will get there, sometimes its the weirdest things.  Keep on keepin on.

Ran trains for an hour NO PILE UPs AGAIN.  That's what I get for running the speed limit.

Stay frosty,

Cool cloudy day here today.  Went to TTOS meet and got there late.  My heart was just not in it although there were lots of things on tables.  Auction started three hours after meet opening as usual.  By that time everyone is burned out.  They never seem to learn.  The place is half empty by the time they start.  Not very good for sellers.  Saw a couple of old aquaintences but I miss the guys I remember from the past who are no longer with us.  Time marches on I guess.  Lots of trains running at the meet however.  They have two portable layouts going at most meets.  Went out with friends last night to a quiz show at local college for the benifit of our Library.  Price included buffet dinner and the show.  We had a good time.  Early mass this morning in order to make train meet.

Have a good week all,

Ray

That sneeky little girl.  Got internet service at the lake and I did not know it.

HOME and tired.  Been putting siding on shed and golf cart shed [it is free].  Got new energy efficient windows installled Tuesday.  Rained Wednesday [big time].  40 MPH winds yesterday.

Hungry, haven't eaten since breakfast.  Trying a Hardees turkey burger.  [first time I've been to Hardees here since BoJangles opened]
