Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 50s.  Picked up Roger Carp's 101 Postwar Classics book at Border's.  Looks like it will be a good read.  We also saw one of "my" soccer girls play about 25 minutes in a 3-0 loss.  She acquitted herself well.  Wife and I went to Pizza Hut after the game and then to Kohl's.  Missed some of the early trick or treaters, but entertained several with the ghost in the attic and the Black Caver Flyer running in the front bay window.  It was a good day.  Watched "Desperate Housewives" and then played cards with the wife.  I had bran muffins on the dining car for breakfast.  Today was the last day for the Cleats comic strip.  Always enjoyed it as it was usually soccer based.  TBIL anytime and I can drive.  I am you with you, Dennis, regarding the image of SJ in a thong????   I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

PS I posted this on the October pot but figured no one would read it as it was after the Chief started the one for November.   Also, I can be on the first page.

Morning to all. Happy November. Where does the time go?  It seems as though we just started summer and now winter is fast approaching.  Freeze warnings here last night with temps in the upper 20's.

Yesterday was kind of a lazy day, watched the NASCAR race, cooked dinner and then wound up flipping between the Saints vs Steelers and NHRA.  I dozed through the NHRA event but did manage to hear that John Force won the Funny Car event. Read in this morning's paper that the Steelers lost to the Saints.

Another busy week with faculty meeting after school today and evening parent conferences on Wednesday, though schools are closed Tuesday for Election Day.  Hopefully the little ones will be on their best behavior today, although I betting on the sugar rush from Trick or Treat to get the week started in style.

Have a great day.

Aloha all. A beautiful cold day here in the Loop. Lotsa filming downtown  - I noticed the trucks for Contagion and something else. An enjoyable Halloween was had - lotsa little visitors - made it to curfew with 6 pieces of candy to spare -  and the youngest (Darth Vader) and I had ourselves a good walk around the neighborhood. Looks like a busy week.

Morning all.  Home for the day as I had to take kids to school and going to do some work around the house.  Laz, congratulations on the hunt.  I had a guy take out two turkey with one shot.  I asked him if times were that tough that he has to conserve on ammo?  Of course, his was all luck.

Chief, sounds like you are keeping to your crazy schedule.  Just remember to take it easy and enjoy your retirement......yeah!

Only one more day till the calls stop...I hope.  Got one this morning from one of those paid solicitors, the ones who give less than 1% to a charity and the rest to "administrative fees".  Tempted to tell him we only take political calls at this timeStick out tongue

Our kids have been reciting the geico commercial, the one with R.Lee Ermy, "Does a retired Drill Instructor make a poor therapist?"  It really is funny.

Have a great day,

Dennis,

I've given up on answering the phone this morning.  Three times so far with a recording each time.

So far on the talking station build, I've got the 755 mechanism mounted in the 589, and all that is left is to wait for the reproducer and turntable to arrive.

I've been following the Log Cabin Train Shop threads here and on OGR, and it is depressing/enraging to say the least.  Bill was my first choice for parts, and I also did business with him in person several times.  He had an amazing amount of parts with an equally amazing amount of knowledge to back it up.  Bill was also without question the best to deal with.  I hope that those who wronged him get what they deserve.

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Cold but Cloudless Taxachusetts,

Hope everyone had a joyous and safe Halloween 2010.  My wife and I sure did.

It was a clear but breezy and mid 40s for Halloween TOT last night.  Wifey was feeling under the weather, so it was time for RI52 to do his best impression of  Martha Stewart and come to the rescue, albeit sans prison garb.

We had 9 kiddies and their parents over for the Halloween festivities which commenced at 5PM.  Murphy's Law (not DougM's) interceded right out of the box with a couple of minor early wardrobe malfunctions and child tears to kick things off....but nothing that an army of problem-solving parents could not rectify.  This year we had more kids ringing the doorbell than I could ever recall....the parents from who-knows-where drive into the neighborhood in caravans, park it, and make the rounds, some pulling wagons to carry all of the loot and emergency supplies.  One group pulled up in a golf cart!  Another observation from yesterday......older "kids' were mysteriously sparce this year.  And all of the costumes seemed especially well thought out and executed.

Although this annual event at our place is supposed to be an after dinner get together, we always serve up some hearty fare just in case.  Beef stew, scala bread, and pizza yesterday, much of which was devoured after the kiddies and their parents got back to the house from TOT.

While da boyz settled in to NFL football on TV in the FR and the ladies took over the kitchen for some spirited yakking (go figure), the kids took over the LR and decided to put on an impromptu, unscripted play of Disney Princesses (the heroines) versus the scary dudes (the villains).  I was glad to see kids, albeit sugar- crazed, left alone by their parents to do what used to come natural to children:  entertain themselves without formal organization, adult supervision, a bunch of rules, or the use of electronic aids.

Had to disarm a couple of the kiddies who commenced to swordfighting in the living room.  Darth Vader versus the Pirate.....interesting stuff.  We called it a draw.

Another observation.  One little girl, perpetually described by her bamboozled parents as the most finicky eater/humanoid on the planet, asked for beef stew and not the pizza her Mom and Dad thought she would jump on.  Then they spent the next 5 minutes trying to talk her out of the beef stew!!!!  I ignored all warnings and served up the stew while they continued their repeated insistence that the stew would go to waste.  To their surprise, the little one buried the bowl.  Guess who is driving the culinary bus and yanking the chains in that household!  Don't ya just love it?  Kids and dogs will never starve themselves to death.  Old farts know this stuff....BTDT.

Oh yeah, the kiddies, not wanting the host's extra Halloween TOT candy to go bad, politely helped make sure they tapped that source, not wanting to tap into their own stashes.....clever.  Resourceful little devils!

The horde pulled out by about 9:30PM, but before they did the parents proud.  The parents asked the kids clean up after themselves!  One minute the place looked like the sight of a terrorist bombing and the next was the opposite.  Parental supervision does work when we/they take the time to quietly enforce the expectation rather than rant and rave with empty threats.

My end of the day impression: whoever invented dishwashers, disposables, and trash bags should have received a Nobel Peace Prize for Convenience!!!  Close runner up: the folks that invented ice cube makers.

Later, gang.

Jack.

PS:  I didn't take Fife's "sleeping attire" advice and found myself standing in the breezy, predawn 30 degree darkness in my pajamas on the rear deck this AM while Maximus the dog was emptying out his tanks.  That was an eye opener the like of which high test coffee or electrocution could not top.

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.

Good morning all,

It was very cool this morning; only 42 degrees when I went out to run.  The wind was also blowing at 12 mph.  The high temp today is only 61, and there is a cold front expected later this week.  It now finally feels completely like fall.  Once the temps drop another 30 degrees or so, I will be very happy.

I am looking forward to a busy day today at work.  I don't have much on the agenda following work; probably continue to swindle some of the kids' candy Devil.  Tonight's MNF game does not interest me too much so I may catch a little of the WS.

Brutus/8N - My son loved his costume.  Unfortunately, he could not even do the robot dance from the 80s, let alone quote Lost in Space lines from the 60s - heck, my wife has never even seen that show.  I was fortunate enough to see reruns when I was growing up.

S.J. - I hope you are enjoying the warmth.  I guess the Lions do better when you're out of town Laugh.

Goody day,

Joe

Good morning all, happy November and I can't believe it's here already.  Pretty quiet Halloween night.  Not too many kids.  Little boys next door came by and they were having a ball.  They are only about 5 and 6 years old.  Got an E mail from an old timer railroad friend of mine from back East this morning with a question about tonnage ratings and helper engines.  Almost burned out my brain trying to remember all that stuff.  I've been retired for 10 years now and haven't used that information for a long time.  I dragged out an old timetable with special instructions and was reminded of all the things we used to have to know running engines.  It is even more complicated now I here.  The rule books used to be something you could carry in your back pocket.  Now they look like a phone book.  Went out to eat with friends after church yesterday to a Sunday Brunch.  Son tooks us out for dinner last night so we had an easy day with no cooking at all.

Laz, good job on the pheasants.

Have a good week y'all

Just back from taking a load of heifer calfs to auction. Averaged 705# each. This year prices are better on the heaver calfs. Less time spent in feed lots eating expensive corn. Sale is tomorrow.

Afternoon All,

Halloween over, now just one more day and hopefully we'll get rid of ghoulies of two years ago. Grumpy

Between a few extra days at the museum and spending morning. noon & night in the garage for the past couple of weeks I'm pooped. However many of the comments I heard last night made it worthwhile. Smile

Lots of little ones, teens, and older folks, escorting the little ones, hung around for a bit after receiving their treats to watch the trains run. The Grim Reaper Gateman was a big hit as was one of those Crawling Hands, motion activated, I put upside down on the layout and there was sufficient vibration for activation so the fingers & thumb would move. First beggars appeared about 5:30 and the last about 9:00, fairly steady all evening and a few neighbors who sat & enjoyed some Sam Adams & White Zin.

Now for a bit of downtime to recover, won't be taking the layout down til next monday so some friends of our daughter and their cookie crunchers can visit sunday.

Later All, feel a snooze coming on. Whistling

Well here it is Nov. 1 and I've been MIA quite a while so I thought I'd just do a quick fly over so you don't have to send out search parties.  It's been quite a fall season, just tremendous weather since Sept. 1 and our trip to Colorado was wonderful, clear blue skies/warm daytime temps and in the 30's at night and DRY!!  I trailered my Wing to Copper Mtn. and ended up doing about 1,000 miles in loops back to the resort each night.  We had a wonderful time and I would consider living in CO .... I know, I've said that for 38 years but it's also nice not having a mortgage payment any longer.

The marching band judging season took off in earnest at the end of Sept. and I just had my last commitment last week, good to be done and the weather was perfect every weekend.  I was able to break away for a few days during the week and explore the Great River Road (again) and I always enjoy that.  We've even had the grandkids here for a few weekends, that's just the best.  Our immediate family is doing great but there is great heart ache with other members with terminal illnesses, tough situations.

Not much action in the train room lately but with us hosting Thanksgiving I just know the grand kids and I will be down there A LOT to just have some BIG FUN Yes

Will check in Dec. 1, stay well.

Jon

Good evening all,

It is cooler and cloudy in SE Indiana with temps in the 50s.  You may refer to me as "King Mike" now as I have been graced with my first (and hopefully last) crown for the teeth.  After much polishing and fiddling, the dentist finally got it to fit today.  Took down the Halloween stuff and ran some errands today.  Found out some of "my" soccer girls will be playing on some travel teams next spring.  More games to watch!  I had bacon and biscuits on the dining car for breakfast.  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good evening everyone.  Jon, good to see you are well.  I agree on Colorado, it is pretty country.  Not sure I would want to winter there, unless I was retired and could choose to not go out in it.

Spank, glad to see you checking in.  Does sound like the knee is doing well.  As for your mom, a TIA, or Transient Ischemic Attack is usually one with minimal affect and most function returns.  I know you will want to find what has caused it.  If she has Carotid Artery Disease, that would need to be addressed.  Also, other things like blood clots can form and cause it.  Either way, need to find out why.  If she is in NJ, St. Barnabas has a very good stroke center that handles these type of things.  Most major medical centers should be good, but ST.B's has made a name for themselves.  When one of the Hackensack Fire Chiefs had a stroke on the job, they sent him there.  Good luck.

Laz, I heard a report today that said that women are much more likely to hit a nail on the head than men.  The reasoning is that women tend to take their time and to make a more deliberate hit.  Men are more likely to try and muscle it and will miss.  In my experience, women are more likely to bat their eyes till we pick up the hammer and do the work.

Well, I spent the afternoon baling pine straw and then spreading a few hundred bales into the flower beds and along the cypress trees.  I found some mighty big holes in the yard either from a ground hog or a armadillo.  Will have to take care of that.  Also, have a yellow jacket nest in the ground I will have to kill.  Oh boy, that should be fun.  We recently had a man killed from Killer Bees when he went near the nest with his tractor here.  Think I will work this through before charging in.

Hope everyone has a blessed day<
Dennis

Good evening all,

The work just kept coming today; however, I still left around my usual time.  I figure the work will still be there tomorrow, but I can never these times back with my family.  I work hard and enjoy it, but my family comes first and I don't want to work so much that I miss quality time with them.  One day the kids will be grown up and I don't want to look back and regret not being there more.

The wife made homemade pizza for dinner and then we all did some chores around the house.  After the chores and baths, I read with the two older kids.  After the kids went to bed I watched the end of the World Series.  And now it's time to relax with the wife before bed.

Good night,

Joe

While the Halloween party at our place was fantastic, the cleanup has been more diffucult than anticipated.  Little hand and fingerprints everywhere, all over the walls and the woodwork.  At least the dog confines his slobber mostly to the windows.  Bang Head

Like the rest of you, I am fed up with the political phone calls and have also let the answering device and caller ID do its magic.  Why doesn't the "do not call list" exclude these knuckleheads from calling me? Bang Head  It will all be over in less than a day.  Hopefully, some of the knuckleheads will be finished in less than a day too.

Joe.....I hear ya.  There was a stint for about 7 years I would leave the house at 5:25AM, at my desk by 6:40Am. and wouldn't get home from work until 8PM.  Wasn't worth the toll it took on me or the family.  During this stint I was feeling burned out and planned to take my wife to Barbados for a second honeymoon, flying my MIL to fly out to my place to watch the kiddies.  A week before we were scheduled to leave the boss wanted me to cancel the trip because of yet another life and death, end of the world issue at work.  Handed him the phone and said if the company would cover my non-refundable deposit AND he could convince my wife to cancel our second honeymoon, I was game.  He backed off.  The last day before I left on the vacation he asked me for my phone number at the resort in Barbados in case he needed something!!! 800-RON-RICO.  Nothing was ever enough.

Rich....glad you got back safely.  Christmas is less than 8 weeks off.

SJ.......if you stay down in FLA long enough the Lions might make the playoffs.

Dennis.....I accidentally found one of those in-the-ground bees nests while I was mowing too.  Nailed me good.  FIL advised me to pour about 8 oz of gasoline down the hole and leave it, don't light it.  He said the bees would take up residence elsewhere quickly, and they did.

Spanky....you have my prayers for your Mom's recovery.  Great news on the knee.

Doug.....you are lucky the rest of us are not your neighbors.  We'd see the trains running in the window and you wouldn't be able to get rid of us.  "Douglas!!!!!  Who is that moron peeing in our bushes?!?"  "Don't pay him no mind. dear.  That's Chief."

Chief.....aren't opossum vicious when the "play dead' thing isn't working out?  Time for the artillery.  Your wifey Pam will kill you if anything happens to the dogs.

Jon.......I don't recall we approved your hiatus from the Pot.  May have to put you on probation along with a fine.  The fine will entail complimenting the Mayor of Roseyville at every opportunity.

Mitch......we are not going to get out of the 40s Nawth of Boston during the daytime for the next 3 or 4 days, around 30 at night.

Good night Ya'll

Jack.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cold 30 degrees. Going up to 64 today with some sunshine.

Today is a busy day. I have a project to do and the usual chores. Maybe a nap, later this afternoon. No train time.

Dining car is here and the usual for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Tuesday.

Hello all.

Only 24 this morning. Lowest this fall.

Glad to hear Mrs Brutus is improving.

Pat, I can feel your pain Had that happen a couple of times. Not an antler though. Dropped antlers don't last long around here. Vermin eat them for the minerals they contain. You load your tires with anti-freeze? Most locals use calcium. Anti-freeze is lighter than water. The weight of a gallon of water  is eight pounds. With calcium you can get up to about twelve pounds per gallon. Won't freeze either. It does make it difficult to deal with a leaky tire.

Spent Sunday spraying old engine oil under and in my new (to me) 1999 Chevy Tahoe. only 80000 miles and in great shape. It will replace my '88 Astro and tow our camper so much easier than Mrs'  S-10 Blazer.

Son is now training in the power plant at the Juniata Shops. Unloading coal and hauling out ash.

Need to get the bulbs that won't stand freezing dug out and in the basement.

Hopping for some added train time after Thanksgiving.

Best get back to work.

Prayers for all that need them.
