Morning all. Can't catch up on the pot due to this dodgey internet connection. Although I'm thrilled for you, Laz! After sitting on the airplane on the ground for six hours, due to terrible weather, and another eight hours in the air, we finally made it to our anniversary destination, uh my conference site, in Honolulu. I am amazed I found this hotel in the dark.  I am scouring the island for some sort of train things. I think there's a sort of tour train on one of the remaining plantations. I may have to trade this for some sort of shopping for the bride...

Dbaker, hope your shows this week end are more productive.  Cool weather ought to help for walking around at Fairground.  I have a buddy working that outdoor railroad today.  I think he spends half his life over there.  He used to be in our Thursday night group but O gauge is too tame for him since the G gauge bug bit him.  I'm still fooling around transferring pictures of my layout to the forums.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it does'nt.  I need lots of practice.

Doug, glad you made it to How are Ya.  They have a train on Maui called the Kanapalli and Pacific.  It is a steam powered narrow gauge.  I think it runs out of Lahina.  Our 50th anniversary is coming up this year too.  Have thought about Hawaii even though we have been there before several times.  It is always nice.  Sounds like it's a lot more expensive than my last visit.  Looks like they are cutting the 7 day vacations to 4 or 5 days and charging more.  We stayed at the Sheraton Princess Kaihalini last time but I doubt if I could afford it now, let alone the big  Sheraton Hotel in Wakiki.  That's my favorite place but it is outrageous now on price.  What's a good property that does'nt cost an arm and a leg.  Don't say Motel Six.  I don't think they have any over there.  Have a very nice anniversay.

 Good Afternoon to All,

Had some quiet time to myself this afternoon. Managed to take a little nap.  Wife and SIL are off to nieces' dance recital.  Our son came home for the weekend to attend a wedding.  Someone had to stay home and take care of the dog. Smile,Wink, & Grin   I am enjoying the quiet.

I have to go out to buy a door prize for Monday's training session and a Father's day gift for my Dad.  I will probably get some dinner while I am out.  I may stop for some Chinese food. I may also go out to the layout after I get home if it is not  too hot.

Weather here has been unpredictable. Rained hard all morning, then sun came out, then rained again after lunch, now the sun is shining.   It;s about 80 degrees now, supposed to have more thunderstorms this evening.

Take care.

HU GYZ,

BIG NEWS here.  A fellow teacher called and asked if I'd be interested on learning how to operate a steam engine.  You betcha I do!  He's on the board of directors of the ASHLAND Pa. Commerence.  I went up there yesterday and they put me to work on the little Vulcan Steamer.  I am learning the duties of the fireman and hope to be operating the lokie by summers end.  I will be doing this volenteer work one day a week on Tuesdays.  It's preetty cool.  The trip out and back on a narrow gauge rail is only about a mile out and back.  But still is a neat thing to learn.  When I retire in 3 years who knows maybe have a job as Engineer?  Here is an older video of the engine I am working on.  Enjoy,,,,,

More thunderstorms last night - what's new!

Went to the annual automotive swap meet at the fairgrounds this morning.  Not very big this year.  Not surprising given today's weather and the economic climate.  Mowed the front lawn and finished just in time for more rain.

Neat gig Laz.  Think you will enjoy yourself?Big Smile  That little steamer has an interesting exhaust beat.  Sounds like the cylinders are about 90 degrees apart on the crank.

'Later.

Laz, that was a neat video.  Thanks for sharing.  You will have a lot of fun firing that bad boy.  I had a chance to play with a small steam engine once years ago. It was standard gauge and burned wood.  It was an 0-4-0T.  The owner let me take the throttle a couple of times.  We ran it an an unused spur track that the Santa Fe had used in earlier times to spot oil cars for smudge pots in the citrus groves around it.  Another neat feature was that there was a winery on the line where we could stop and check out their tasting room and buy some stuff to go.  Needless to say there were some happy trips on that little engine.  It is still around somewhere.  I saw it once in Sacramento, California at the Railfair they have every 10 years at the California State Railroad Museum.  The original owner passed away and the engine has been through several owners since then.  The guy I knew bought it from Mr. Chad O'Connor who was well known for rebuilding small steam engines.  There was a video about Chad called "A steam Driven Man".  I think Mr. O'Connor built the two replicas of the Union Pacific 119 and the Central Pacific Jupiter that are used for the Transcontinental Railroad reinactments at Promontory Utah by the U.S. Park Service.  Have fun,

Ray

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 80s.  Did a "Chief" today.  Mowed most of the yard, walked to the YMCA, did weights, walked back home, took shower, went thru Honda plant tour (very long) with my dad, came home, took nap.  I had bacon and biscuits on the dining car this morning for breakfast.  Already missing my Norwegian soccer friend.  Beacon is lit.  Quals for Iowa were rained out, lineup based on owner's points.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Actually got a bit of rain last night. Rain in June. Normally this is one of our driest months. I guess the Too-soons are here to stay.

Well the ultrasound came and went. I wont know anything 'til some time next week. Saw her making notations on the screen, but for all I know she could have been ordering lunch. I seem to have settled in on the meds for now.

I saw a mention that a Mr. O'Conner built the replica engines for the Golden Spike National Historic Monument. For those who haven't been there it is well worth seeing. I went by last summer when helping a friend move to Seattle. We got there late in the afternoon, but in time to see them run both locomotives back to the engine house. They fire both off every day about 6 months of the year, one on coal and one on wood. You could easily feel the years drift away as I was looking at the locomotive in the distance and hearing the whistle reveberate off the mountains. I even got to help the ranger fold up the 20 star flag. This is really what preserving history is all about.

Happy Father's Day all!

Rain off and on here in th great northwest. Just been catching up on all the "goings on" here on the pot. Wanted to post a quick note wishing everyone a "Happy Fathers Day" If your "young un's" turned out like mine, then you definitely earned a lazy relaxing day off. In fact I do not think there are enough fathers days left to make up for those years! SighBanged Head

Morning all!

Happy Father's Day!

Sir James:  I didn't know you grew up in Toledo.  We park by the river...if that's where you grew up...the place doesn't look so good.  The few stores there have bars on the doors, and on the few windows they haven't boarded up.  There are 1 or 2 really expensive homes mixed in with a lot of broken down ones.

Laz:  COOL!

Doug:  Careful on the shopping in HI...Some parts are like Rodeo Drive...Especially by Waikiki Beach.  Try to find a roadside place to eat that has a Mixed Plate.  Smoked pork from the previous night Luau, and much less expensive.

Hope to spend the day watching the Open, but the kids seen to change their minds on what they want to do every 3-minutes.  Bride still sleeping.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, maties! Pirate  Mostly cloudy and 72, with winds from the NW at 15-17 mph, here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Spent 4 hours at the dock yesterday afternoon.  Saw a SW1200 and two GP9s pulling a long hopper train off the wharf whilest I was there.  Installed new ignition switch.  Did a lot of organizing below deck, finding lots of tools and sailing nick-nacks the former owner left behind.  He made some modifications that I'm going to try and write to him about, so I have a better understanding of what lies beneath.  Fabric has been ordered for cabin cushions, and that should be done by mid July.

Wanted to take my parents out for a sail at noon, but not sure Dad is feeling up to that.

Everyone. enjoy your day. Cool

HI GYZ,

Thanks for all the CONGAs on the little steamer.  I talked with my MOM yesterday and told her the news of my endevor.  I also found out that the engine that I am working on was last used in 1927 outside of Hazleton, Pa, which happens to be the town I grew up in.  Told my MOM this and she said, is it a Lokie engine?  Now my MOM has no railroad background whatsoever.  I said yes, it is why?  She then told me of my Aunt's father, who lived next door to us, was a Lokie engineer how worked for the mines.  WOW, small world?  This Lokie could be the exact one he use to drive way back when?  I was floored.  I have to ask my aunt if there were any pics of her DAD with that engine.  I go back up to work on Tuesday.

Raining here all day yesterday, whatched the US OPEN, pretty soggy there too.

SPMAN, to bad I could'nt find a beer garden along the way in my engine like you found the winery.  But that might get ugly?

Stay frosty,

laz57

HAPPY FATHERS DAY

Good Morning all

Kurt, yea I did. Born and raised in Toledo. I have an aunt that lives just off of the river road  about a mile west of the park. Still really nice neighborhoods there. Toledo itself however has fallen like many of the other midwest cities.

The  kids have already paid their visits this week so I guess granny and I will prepare a burnt offering on the grill. Haven't decided what yet.

Have a Great Fathers Day....S.J.

Good morning all. Happy Makuakane Day to those who are - welcome Barry! Too bad about the ex-car - sort of like the ex-parrot. Kurt, thanks for the heads up - now I know Prada and Gucci are open late here just like the 7-11. Dodged that bullet.  Jet lagged still. I could get used to this place... it's like a movie set out in the country. Great video Laz. Nice chatting with Jim and Wes yesterday afternooon before the phone battery died.

Happy Father's Day!

Finally got caught up on the coffee pot - sheesh!

Happy birthday to your son, Wes!

Laz – Big Congrats!  That locomotive is cool!  They have one like that in front of the transport museum here in St. Louis.  AWESOME!  I sure hope that engineer job works out Smile That would be TOO COOL if it was the one your great uncle worked on!

Barry – love that “ex-car” line!

Ray – neat story, sounds like you had some fun and some nice wine, lol!Bob – good luck on the ultrasound!Kurt – they also need to get some shaved ice!

Fife – that boat is coming along Smile My buddy redid his whole pontoon boat and now having matching cushions made for the seats.

Mowed the back yard and down in the trees Friday night, then yesterday I worked 6, did the shopping at Schnucks (grocery) and Walmart, finished the lawn, then made some steaks, burgers and dogs on the grill - yum!  Poor Chewy has a virus, but she is getting a little better now.

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
