Someone must be doing a lot of maintence, 10:28 pm (PST), and this is really slow.  Looked as some threads that had 5 posts, very slow (Lionel - TMCC/Legacy thread).

I KNOW that monitoring software is available, someone need to check it out!  I thought it my be to a lot of people on at the same time, or posting at the same time.  I don't think so.  My concern is that EVENTUALLY, it is very likely that only the electronic format of this publication may be all that's available.  Hope the software gets better before then.

So it's not just me that's suffering! That is why I haven't been here for ages, I just got fed up with the software.  I tried at all different times too, thinking site maintenance might be the problem but frankly I reckon the problem lies with the source, be it bandwidth, server, software or provider.

It's them grits! A big huge bowl of them! Grits are the main ingredient of malware. I see the moderators deep sixed the grit bowl. Things should be faster now.

Things hit their server just like our PC at home .  And sometimes they just have to wipe the cache and other sytem maintenance procedures including a full reboot . I think they do a darn good job for the traffic both all day and into the wee hours of the night . Alot better than my service provider who's down many hours or all day or 2 they call servicing .... Mischief  ... lousey company paid off the county commissioners and have a 8 year contract with NO competition .... our commissioners are as crooked as a dog's hind leg !

To All,

Yesterday morning I tried three different ways to link-up to this site without success, untill noon was I able to link-up.

I've got A BIG service provider here and the computer system seems slower than before and my neighbors have the same tardy problem with the same BIG provider.

Speaking of having the local politicians in a back pocket, the same goes on here where I live, outside of A BIG CITY.   I can't mention the name of the companies, but they were the only game in town due to their political influence.

Oletimer,  Actually, I agree with you.  I applaud CTT for the forum and really appreciate it.  I would like to think that someone within, has a means of monitoring the situation.  Especially given the complaints that come from the users.  I know on our website, I get a report of downtime, explanations, number of hits, inquiries, speed, etc..  But, I dont have the volume that is here much less the other associated forums.  So onward and forward, my comments meant to be positive feedback.

I totally agree that this forum is too slow.  I suspect it is due to the amount of graphics on the pages.  The slowness of this forum is the biggest detriment to forum activity.  I think the folks on this forum are great and the advice is great.  But I avoid this forum due to the slowness.

I did switch browsers from Internet Explorer to Firefox  specifically to speed up this forum.  Firefox is faster, but the forum is still slow.

The forum designers need to look at the OGR forum to see how fast this forum should be.  The OGR forum is much larger and much faster.

Good Luck...

If the CTT and Model Railroader forums are in the same boat, then the size of the Kalmach forums combined are huge compared to OGR forums combined.

There's alot of graphics here ... it's usually your video card slowing most folks down . The web is only going to get more video intensive ... so sad to say you'll have to upgrade that video or PC .

I wish this site acted like the OGR one.  That's why the only posts  I do here are on threads like this!   Slow, slow, slow.

Here's my My 2 cents.

Kalmbach knows how much activity their sites generate.  They use this information to convince organizations such as Trainland to purchase ad space on this site.  With this basic information they should know what type of software they need, not only for the forum but for all of the other pages.  Something is obviously amiss because the print magazine, CTT,  just promoted the  web pages extensively.

So we have the print magazine promoting a website that works like molasses on a cold Iowa morning and instead of increasing traffic to the site, the slowness is driving people to other sites.  When MR and TRAINS websites activity and revenue generation decrease, maybe then the bean counters will realize that technical incompetence has been a problem.

I will second Buckeye on that. A few weeks ago I told a fellow coworker who is getting onto the hobby about this site. Wouldn't you know it he could not connect. This was a Friday, by Monday he had found the OGR site and forums and bought a subscription with them. I tried to explain some times it is a little slow. His reply "I dont have time for that." I tried last night for an hour with no success. Left the computer desk in a sour mood. I hope they can figure something out as I really like the people and advice on this forum!

Kalmbach's internet servers support websites for 15 magazines plus the books department - not just the railroad titles or the forums of the railroad titles.

My two cents is that it is a server issue, not a software issue, but I can say that the online staff hasn't been able to pin down a cause for the slowness. They try to treat the symptoms (such as locking the long coffee pot-type threads monthly), things speed up a bit, then they slow down. If other sites run faster, they probably don't have all the online content we do for 15 regular magazines plus specials and one-off titles - videos, downloads, etc. - they just have a splash page or a forum.

All I can say is that online is aware of it - and with the resources we are putting into internet content - we want it to be as easily accessible as possible to as many people as possible.

A few minutes ago I tried to post a reply on a similar thread over on the Trains forum.  It was titled something like "Computer crap".  When I clicked on the reply button I got a page that said "Forum not found".  I tried it three times before I gave up.  But posts on that thread continue to accumulate.  I guarantee my video card is not the problem.

I am aware that new software or hardware sometimes has issues that didn't come up during testing, but the fact that it has been going on for 6 months is a pretty good indication that they have no intention of fixing it.

Bob Keller,

Thanks for your post indicating that Kalmbach is looking into the problem.

My reaction to the slow forum is to open a Window's game and play it while a page loads.
